Great video John. I'm a complete novice with wood chisels - I purchased some that were fairly pricey - and within 30 minutes hit a small nail. So started googling - found recommendations for the MK11 - bought one on ebay. Diamond stone. Now how to use - and I went thru many youtube vids where they went over it with at a hi level - yours was the first that targeted someone like myself. You went over the "why" for the primary bevel - the advantage of a micro bevel - when to stop the back and forth "grinding" and just use a back stroke. Absolutely what I needed to understand. Thanks again from someone across the pond from you... Romany

Thanks John. Just received the Veritas MK II system as a Christmas gift from my spouse. Great video on how to properly sharpen a chisel. Love the line that your workspace is so small you haven't got the room to swing a cat in there. HA HA!! Hope all is well. Merry Christmas / Happy New Year to you and your family from Newfoundland, Canada.

Hi John: I was interested to see your video showing the narrow chisel holder as I bought the original veritas model before the deluxe MKll was available . I will definitely be getting the narrow chisel jig as well. I would like to share with you what I have been doing for years. As the 25 degree bevel is already there from the factory, I hone the chisel with a secondary bevel of 30 degrees. I only go about 1/8” wide with that and then I turn the micro bevel knob from the 12 o’clock position to the 6 o’clock position and hone a micro bevel which will be one or two degrees according to the manual for a 31 or 32 degree micro bevel. Only a few strokes on the micro bevel, maybe 1/32”. The next time sharpening is needed I only sharpen the micro bevel. As I sharpen more times the 30 degree bevel and the micro bevel both need to be sharpened. When the 30 degree bevel gets a 1/4” or so wide I grind the 25 degree factory bevel with a bench grinder and veritas grinding jig and start again from square one. This saves a lot of tedious hand grinding on the 25 degree bevel supplied from the factory. Thanks, John

Great video , just bought one on amazon and waiting for it to arrive from UK. I bough a set of chisels and need to sharpen them . There is a guy called Ron Paulk on utube that builds out trailers as rolling tool boxes , being a carpenter you might like it , he also has excellent benches. I have a company in Limerick fitting windows and doors and last Christmas I build my own rolling work shop and love it . Changed how I work and saves me time and money every day Great video thanks again

Its a great bit of kit use it all the time, I'm an Electrician though who loves woodworking, couldn't possibly claim to be a carpenter lol

John was humble here saying “bad technique” caused the skew in the secondary bevel. Taking the high road by not blaming the tool! But it’s important to know that when you move the dial from 12 to 6 o’clock it is only raising one side of the roller. So if you continue using even pressure (“good technique” in most cases) it will cause that slight skew. Once you turn that dial, switch your technique to add a little extra pressure to one side to help make an even micro-bevel across the blade. Keep up the great work!

Nice! I was going to buy a makita to sharpen but this just seems so much easier!

Nice Video, you brought out some details that I have not seen on other videos. Ie thumb position on the jig, pulling the blade backwards to finely hone the surface, not push it forward. Great tips I learned something new today!

Very helpful. Was getting some of these anomalies myself, such as skewed 2nd bevel. Many thanks, John.

I had that same stone, for the first month or two it was cutting nice but then i got a new set of chisels which all needed the primary bevel done. Ten chisels wow at the end of the day my fingers were cramping up and the stone was in the bin hahahaha. The next week i had three DMT stones so much better.

DMT stones are quality, I just switched to the scary sharp system so I'll see how that goes, fist impression are pretty good.

John - I follow your channel with great interest and I have a question re Veritas Mkii narrow honing guide. I’m a tad confused as to whether I should be using the knob at the 6 o’clock position or resetting the angle to 30* using the gauge as I understand the former adds only 1 or 2 degrees for the secondary bevel. Hope you can help. Keep up the great videos.

Set your primary bevel with the knob at 12 o'clock which will give you the angle from your fence, then sharpen a secondary bevel with it at 6. Then all you need do is touch up the secondary bevel when it gets dull with the knob still at 6, this is done so you don't need to remove material from the entire primary bevel every time you want to sharpen. Just remember to set it back to the 12 o'clock position when setting the primary on a different tool, I have made that mistake a few times.

Hi John, I noticed you didn’t flatten the back of the chisel first, or is it just that this was a quick sharpening guide?
@JohnMcGrathManInShed2 жыл бұрын
This is an early video of mine, I had already flattened the back, you should absolutely flatten the back
