I’m a new comer to woodworking and have viewed many KZbin videos on sharpening and by far this is the most detailed and comprehensive sharpening video I have seen. Thank you for a job well done.

Not sure how I missed this one when you first did it John; a really clear description of how to use the Veritas MkII - thanks.

Much appreciated! Thank you kindly for reaffirming my belief in the Veritas MkII deluxe system--it is that to which I am now decided that I soon must be treating myself (and my many chisels + pair of planer blades). Your video encourages me to go ahead and commit to the slightly added initial expense of the full featured Deluxe Honing Guide System, which will assure I have exactly the correct guide, rollers and the uniquely interchangeable, reliably repeatable, high-precision assurance easily achieved with the Veritas MkII angle stop. It is basically fool-proof, especially for guys like myself who aren't the least bit afraid of reading the freaking manual cover-to-cover before getting started. Glad I found your channel and looking forward to seeing more content.

Excellent review and demonstration. I see one of those honing guides in my workshop in the near future. Thanks.

Nicely done. Nothing fancy - just how to get a blade sharp and get it back to work.I appreciate the demonstration of using the MKII system -- mine just came in from Lee Valley and this was just the demo I needed to see.Thank you!

Great tutorial mate! Looked at quite a few of these and yours was one of the better presentations at the moment. I hope your sub count rises rapidly, you deserve a lot more!

Could you have gone to the leather strop after the diamond stone or do you find it's better to use the waterstone. Is it may or does the 8000 side sound course.
@JohnMcGrathManInShed6 жыл бұрын
Hard Worker yeah you probably could the 1000 grit diamond stone puts a fairly fine edge on the blade. I just find a quick run on the water stone helps.

Good demo of the Veritas Deluxe honing guide. As a matter of interest why didn’t you leave the plane blade in the honing guide when you used the strop? I’d be concerned that I would inadvertently round that nice cutting edge if I stropped it freehand rather than using the honing guide.. Thanks for the demo!
@JohnMcGrathManInShed3 жыл бұрын
You won't round it on the strop

Great video. I'm looking to purchase my first plane. Do you have a link for where you sell your refurbished planes? Thanks.

Awesome video, thank you! What is the grit of the waterstone you used?
@JohnMcGrathManInShed5 жыл бұрын
Glad you like it, the water stone is an 8000 grit
@williamcarney65 жыл бұрын
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed Thanks so much! I realized after I asked the question that the link you provided in the description for the waterstone indicated what the grit was, so my bad.

Have you got a video on sharpening chisels. How long do you soak the waterstone for as some higher grits are splash and go.
@JohnMcGrathManInShed6 жыл бұрын
Hard Worker I haven't made one on chisels but I will, I just leave my stones in water all the time and set them aside.
@hardworker80306 жыл бұрын
John McGrath I'm struggling to sharpen my chisels so it would be good to see how you sharpen yours.

thanks man, the tray is just a lid off a plastic container.

Is there a reason you are honing the primary bevel and after that the secondary
@JohnMcGrathManInShed6 жыл бұрын
Branka Hikl I use a small secondary bevel to make it quicker to sharpen up when I'm working. It only takes a couple of passes to get it back to razor sharp. You don't have to use a secondary bevel.
