When is a good time to cancel your existing service with Verizon after you set up the new router
@jamesSmith-hg1tf Жыл бұрын
Great video. I have a question. I've had Fios at my house for 3 years and always had the 1 gig. I just redid my service with Verizon and canceled my cable and received this same new router in your video. Here's what's throwing me off.. I've always had a main router and an extender. I was under the impression my main Router was in my living room connected to the wall via Coax. No ethernet wall jack available. And downstairs where my main Verizon Fios box is, the ONT is bolted into that and is hardwired. There is no adaptor or blue reset button visible. Also that is where I believe my extender is, which is connected to the ONT/Main white box via ethernet cable. I'm not entirely sure which is the main router now and which is the extender. One router give me 700-900 maps and the other usually less than 100 mbps. The instructions state to plug in this new white Router in an an ethernet wall jack but I don't have that in my living room, where I planned to switch routers out. Is it possible my main router is downstairs connected to the ONT/white box? And that'd where the new one will go? And the living room router that's connected via coax only, is actually my extender? OR, my coax is internet also and my living room router is my main and just needs the coax and no ethernet wall jack? It makes me wonder if all this time my living room router should've been connected to an installed ethernet jack on the wall. Which is why the loving room only gives less than 100 mbps when I've been paying for 1 gig on two routers and only getting q gig out of the main router. That's not a major concern but im now stumped as to where I'm supposed to hook this new router up. Downstairs with the main box/ONT or in the living room with just coax OR was I mislead and definitely need an internet jack in my living room for the new router and Verizon failed to inform me. Forgive me for the many variables. I'm pretty sure I'm to hook up downstairs to the ONT via ethernet but I always thought that my extender downstairs but because it's plugged in ethernet maybe that's the main. But if I want my router upstairs to also push 1 gig does that still require an ethernet wall jack installed? I feel like that shouldne been done initially 3 years ago if so. And I've paid for a worthless extender only pushing less than 100 mbps not being connected via erhernet?. Help me make sense of this. Thanks.

My first impression, the menu system (using browser) is not intuitive. With my other routers on first setup the menu system was easier. Next issue , you cannot setup this router without it being connected to the active Fios connection. I wanted to do this to set it up like my old router before actually connecting. This gives me the feeling that Verizion has some access to this router. I ended up connecting my old router instead which work like a champ and got great upload and download on the speed test. PS i got the verizon 3100 for free as a promotional setup.

My question to you all is : how do you normally work with Verizon on things like activation problems on new phones and questions on insurance and such ? Do you have a client rep you ask , a special number to call , or how can I get quick and reliable results here ? What is the proper way to request a new client rep ? If I make the request , I want to make sure I don't end up still stuck with the same guy . @@whiteaviation There's your problem, the extender you bought connects to the primary router using WIFI which will probably be weak. Your Best Bet is to get a FiOS Network Extender which plugs into coax INSTEAD of your existing extender, its basically hardwired so you'll get significantly better speeds. I mean you could try to ensure the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks are separated and connect to the 5GHz only. and if its too slow still, you're probably too far away in which case you'll need the FiOS extender or a MOCA adapter off of amazon.

@@AMPTechGrade I was considering buying my own router as well but I do use their TV service. I was wondering why a third party router would be unable to work with Fios TV. Would you recommend just using the provided Verizon router then?
@AMPTechGrade2 жыл бұрын
@@TheNickster7654 it honestly depends on some features you want. So that coax TV jack going in to the router is responsible for sending out Internet signals thru those TV jacks to provide internet services to the Verizon cable boxes. That internet signal is necessary for channel guide, video on demand, and simple activation/updates. Boxes connect every time they boot. You could get around all this if you bought TiVos like I used to do. But if you REALLY wanna use Verizon boxes and your own router, you could in theory get a moca adapter which provides the necessary internet signal to the Verizon boxes, the only caveat is you lose minute features like phone calls on the TV, watching TV away from home, scheduling DVR shows away from home, harder to troubleshoot, etc. why I don’t recommend it

BUT if you're right next to it, look at the 4:10 mark as its the optional steps you need. Gotta make sure its on 80hz wide and download acrylic wifi to see if you are on a wifi channel that is free.
@MrApplewine3 жыл бұрын
5Ghz should be used for line of sight transmission, not going through walls. The best approach to networking is to put an inexpensive wireless access point in the room you need it rather than trying to load more antennas and technology into a central location. Location is far more powerful. So you either run an ethernet like to the room you need it and plug a wap in there or if you have coax only then get a moca 2.5 adapter. Moca 3.0 is unfortunately not available quite yet, but 400 Mbps or whatever you get with wifi is more than enough for a hand held device. For anything with an Ethernet port you should use that to get full speed. Many wireless access points also include extra Ethernet ports so you can have a gigabit port to plug in your console or desktop etc I only use wifi for handheld devices, and do not recommend using WiFi otherwise and don't use wifi for real time voice and communication, except maybe if you are close to a 5ghz WAP that is line of sight you could try that.

@AMPTechGrade3 жыл бұрын
Nope. For verizons phone service, a line needs to come from the ONT (that black box) to your home phone handset. The router won’t connect directly to the phone. But I would recommend an Ooma device from Amazon. It plugs into your router and your home phone and is much cheaper

Should be automatic. Unplug the router and game console and plug back in and it should work. If this NAT menu is within call of duty, it will never stay “Open” because Call of Duty’s menu is glitchy. As long as it says the NAT is Open on the game console system settings, you are fine

what is coax do? You don't have to connect it?
@AMPTechGrade3 жыл бұрын
If you pay for TV, YES because it gives channel guide info to the verizon boxes. If just internet, then no you do not need it. But if you have a big home and the router isn't enough, I recommend a fios network extender which uses coax to connect the extender & rebroadcast the wifi signal in which case you WILL need coax. But for the most part, coax is OPTIONAL for internet only.

@@lindavermillion8643 the ONT is the fiber modem, you'll wanna look around the house for it. whenever you had FiOS installed, they shouldve ran a network cable from the ONT to the router's white (WAN) port. @@AMPTechGrade can’t find ONT
@AMPTechGrade3 жыл бұрын
So if you’re trying to get service or do a self install but can’t find the ONT, chances are the prior owners took it or something else. Error on the systems part, a tech will need to come out to install it for you. If you already have active service and can’t find it, could just be hidden well. If it’s an apartment, it might be on a utility room on your balcony or in a closet somewhere. If it’s a home, check the basement, outside the home, or inside a utility closet or laundry room. It might even be an older white unit or inside some kind of plastic white/grey/black weather box. Especially the outdoor units, you won’t see a box inside a box, youll just see connections for coax, phone (rj11) and Ethernet inside of it
