I just got a 20 lb bag of Wagners Bird seed...this is a different variety than I used for my first batch of worm chow...so I wanted to see if it worked as well... Just another option for feeding your worms...

I use corn deer feed, 50lb bag for about $10 at Tractor Supply. Also clean dried egg shells and any grain cereal or oatmeal that went stale. I use coffee grinder & make a lot over winter when too cold outside & garden/compost bins do not need my attention. Thanks for mention of bird seed.

Some deer feed, chicken feed, corn meal, whole wheat flour, oatmeal, oyster flour, egg shell flour & kelp meal makes this feed even better for not much more price per batch once you buy the initial ingredients & about a million times better than the pre-made stuff...I sprinkle it atop my food scraps & bedding each feeding to entice them to the scraps.

I use this to attract worms to my raised bed garden. They go crazy for it.

I clean out my parrot cages, grind all that up into coarse powder, and feed them that. It has all kinds stuff in it like dried fruits, nuts, seed, and parrot droppings...worms love it. A little work but it solves 2-3 problems for me...

Amazon pricing seems to change almost daily....I just check in every once in a while and sometimes things are listed really cheap....then a couple days later the price shoots back up....not sure why. On Amazon right now I do see a 40lb bag of wagners four season blend...for $27 with free shipping....that's a pretty good deal. I don't have access to a feed store...since I currently stationed overseas....but if I was in the states that would be my first and probably cheapest choice....but since I have to mail everything...Amazon is my #1 choice.

Thanks for the tip on birdseed. How can I get rid or reduce the small mite population in my worm bin without hurting my worms? They are all over the banana and on the sides crawling.

Raise the Ph. And dry it by adding Cardboard/Paper. Dolomite Lime will raise the Ph as well.

I got bird seed in a bucket that ended up filled with water. Can I use the seeds and do they still need to be ground up?
@vermibagcompostinggardenin58153 жыл бұрын
If it’s already starting to decompose then yes....but if it’s still viable seed...you’ll get a jungle growing in your bag😁

Richard Portelli ya I bet that would work great as well...wish I had it available here. If I lived somewhere near a feed store in the states I’d just buy a 50lbs bag of Purina worm chow direct from the feed store...then it’s really cheap...but to buy it 1 lb at a time is ridiculously expensive. I normally just feed garden scraps since I have almost an endless supply of them, but it’s neat to try different things and give the worms a little variety from time to time 😁

Great information, byying cornmeat, oatmeal and wheat meal are expensive to make worm chow. I buy bird seeds for wild birds so I'll use the bird seeds for Worm chow in the future. Thank you for saving money.

why bird feed? why not just feed free food straps?
@vermibagcompostinggardenin5815 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely don’t need to feed them some type of worm chow, but some folks are wanting fat worms for fishing and such..and some type of worm chow will really fatten the worms up. I rarely give them this…it’s more of a treat from time to time. Food scraps are more than enough…and that is the whole purpose of vermicomposting 😊
