punk is more simple and repetitive, has 18th note feel, and metal uses a lower tone, and is complex, the muted strings then playing, spacing between power chord, its more metal.

metal sounds dark & heavy punk sounds happy & energetic try listen to 2000's Nu Metal (SOAD, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Slipknot, etc) and compare to 2000's pop punk (Green Day, Blink-182, Sum 41, etc) if You want to learn how to recognize which one is metal or punk, because it's very easy to differ. Classic metal & punk sounds more similar

Another option would be to mic an amp, where you just run your guitar into an amp with a microphone in front of it and run the mic to your computer interface
