Singing Cedar's Queen name - survived the winter, a little play on singing, mountains (Vermont) and winter - Maria Von Trapp. Call her Maria. Edit: I was too fast. Two hives - the second could be Julie Andrews, call her Julie (pure coincidence, I promise!!) Edit 2: I was still too fast. Delete the first edit, suggested name is Maria. That's my thought. Great video!

An easy way to split a double nuc hive: Lift 4 frames from both nucs up to a super, put in 2x4 new frames in the nucs, and install a queen excluder on top of them. Set the super with the lifted 2x4 frames on top of the excluder. Wait until all cells in the super are capped, then remove the nucs under the queen excluder and place them in another spot in the beeyard. Put the super on the bottom board (important with entrance on both sides) and move a frame with eggs from a good beehive into the super. This will stop all swarm tendencies. All the old bees will return to the super and will be occupied creating a new queen. The nucs will only have new bees, which will not fly for 2-3 weeks. And after that, they will be occupied getting pollen and honey. Since the nucs are not able to fly out and collect nectar for a while they need to have a couple of frames with honey.

This is a fascinating subject as well as important for our food supply. I have learned a lot from you beekeepers. Even though I live in an apartment in a large city Iand won't be able to become a beekeeper, I continue to watch. In some videos when you show the queen you point to her with a red arrow. Could you continue to do that for us newbies? Thanks.

Hail and Good Morrow! Well, you asked, so though I may well be over the top, here are my two suggestions, given that the queens came from a Singing farm: Aglaopheme "With Lambent Voice" Leucosia "White Substance" These names came from those of Sirens in Greek Mythology and believe they might work for you. Aglaopheme seems appropriate because 'lambent means to 'flicker' or 'dance lightly' over a surface, and when I see your queens, that are doing that quite diligently, 'dancing' over the light surface of the wax cells, lightly distributing their eggs into the cells and then 'dancing' again to the next cells. Leucosia because of what fresh drawn new beeswax looks like: nearly snow white with a high sheen to it, nearly brilliant to the eye. There you have it from, as usual; Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY

@matthewharris3131 4 жыл бұрын
Great video. But with the weaker resource nucs why do you automatically reverse the boxes to put brood below and space above? They have decided to be in the top box for a reason, no? If they want to be up in the top box why not leave them there, where it's warmer, and let them build downwards when they are ready? It's what they would do in nature, if you know what I mean.

I have a question that nobody seems to be able to answer on Facebook beekeeping forums...with a double nuc, how would you pitch the hive to shed water and moisture during the winter months? Do you just keep it level, or tip it towards the colony you favor more?
@vinofarm

Just keep it mostly level. I also use Vivaldi boards and burlap so moisture wicks up and out of my hives. And I use awnings to keep rain and snow off the landing boards.

Sorry if this is a redundant question, but do you think there is a correlation between the slammin Vermont queen hives being next to extra resources/dead out hives?
@vinofarm
@vinofarm 4 жыл бұрын
I kind of doubt it, since the hives are not accessible from the inside. They would need to fly out and go in the other entrance like everyone else. They were strong going into winter and stayed strong. I'm excited to see how they perform this season. And just to be clear, I got 4 Vermont queens last year and two didn't even make it into winter. These two are slamming, but the others were never strong. So I'm 50/50 overall on the supplier, but the ones that made it seem amazing.
