Loren, thank you so much for this. Before I listened to this wonderful broadcast,I knew only of Israel's work on "Live at the Pershing " and "Happy Moods". Thanks to you and Vernel,I have learned so much about Israel's incredible career, and what an extraordinary individual he was. Thanks again for your work and immeasurable contribution to this music. The value of KZbin in preserving the work of these singular artists, for the familiar and unfamiliar as well, cannot be overstated.

This is wonderful, Loren! I was the pianist in Vernel’s trio back in ‘85 through ‘92. Truly an honor.

Hi Loren, Not sure if you will see this but I am wondering what Vernell is referring to when he talks about ‘the book’? Does he mean a ‘real book’ like we have today? He mentions that Israel learnt the whole thing in his hotel room. But then he also mentions something about George Shearer’s book… Did artists have a book of charts that they would hand out to their musicians and always use that so they could use deps easily ? Thanks in advance and also thank you for taking the time to post this interview!

It is a treat to hear this interview. I have enjoyed that Jamal trio for years, and recently, extra tracks have become available on CDs. There is an excellent video clip of them, a TV show from 1959. There are two online versions of it. One has the sound out of synch with the video, but there is a correct one. A precious video. It's sad that Ahmad, and later, Vernel got into Islam. That allah thing doesn't even exist and Mohammed was an evil man who couldn't prophesy a baseball score. It is an abomination to God. There is only one God (I Timothy 2:5) and his name is Jesus (John 1:1 & 14). Don't make the same mistake, dear friend. Get saved by accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour. Here is how "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and ... he was buried and ... he rose again the third day according to the scriptures." (I Corinthians 15:3-4) "The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin." (I John 1:7) "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved." (Acts 16:31)

It's none of your business what a person's beliefs are when it comes to religion you are putting yourself above them, now repent and beg for forgiveness for judging people.
