Ironically, killing Henselt is technically the safer option with respect to Temeria’s fate. When it comes down to saving either Triss or Anaïs later on, saving Anaïs generally results in the better outcome for Temeria, BUT if you killed Henselt before that, then Roche will still be able to save Anaïs even if you choose to save Triss. Temeria will still collapse into civil war, and Roche will be forced to go on the run for Henselt’s murder, but Roche will take Anaïs with him as he goes into hiding, in hopes that someday she can return to reclaim her birthright.

Look. Saving Henselt is the “lesser” evil. That being said, sorceresses hate Nilfgaard because they exercise very tight control of mages. Interestingly Emhyr doesn’t really have much magic in him, nor does he have amazing fighting abilities, but as a personality he is the most powerful man in the world. Phillipa could have been said to number among the genuine threats to Emhyr as the influence she wielded both in books and in games through the lodge was very impressive. Not to mention for years she had Redania under her thumb. Henselt occupied a niche for the sorceresses. Militarily strong enough to be a serious force on the field and a buffer against Nilfgaard, but so ambitious and head strong that he threatened the sorceresses balance of power. Foltest was the sorceresses ideal ruler. Had Foltest lived, he likely could/would have forged a northern empire. Incredibly cunning, strong willed, but also understanding the need to compromise and negotiate pragmatically. If Foltest lived, with the advisorship of Triss, and Natalis as a Marshal Temeria could/would have likely been an incredibly tough nut for Nilfgaard to crack. Even with the uprising only a few months prior, Foltest still had the loyalty of Mahakklam elite infantry and crossbows. He still had an incredibly impressive army with a lot of loyal nobles. He had connections in Touissant. If Geralt saved Adda he had Radovid as a son in law. Henselt respected Foltest. The only thing Henselt lacked was an heir. Even though Letho and the lodge killed Demavend. Demavend was weak. The assassination of Foltest at the start was the most important event of Witcher 2. Sadly due to Witcher 3 targeting new players, alllat all of Witcher 2 decisions were made moot.

This plot line shows how fate works in the Witcher universe. You got a whole quest trying to undo a curse that will kill the Henselt for sure, only to be given the choice to kill him later. Could it be that Geralt failed to lift the curse, or was his fate to die either way? Even if spared, if you take Witcher 3 into consideration, he didn't live for too long.

The previous games are a good experience on their own, and can only contribute to the epicness of the final chapter in Geralt's story.

The entire problem with the Witcher series is that it never seems to make sense to fight against Nilfgard. In theory they are the enemy. But at all times they seem to be more reasonable and treat the people better than the rulers they had before...and that is even true in a time of war and during an occupation! Could you imagine Emhyr pulling shit like that? Just look at this scene. "You need me. Without me the north will fall to Nilfgard!"...so? What? Are you going to tell me that when Nilfgard invades they will murder my friends and rape the woman I love?

Depends. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Nilfgaard is really big on disproportionate punishments.

Personally I would’ve rather stabbed Henselt you-know-where considering what he did to Ves, but admittedly that would be a fatal mistake in the long run because then Henselt would be pissed off and have even more motive to go after Roche (and Geralt by extension). Oh well.
