Absolutely not. If the sign says 9am - 11pm, that means I can come in at 9:01 am and I expect full service. Staff should be there at 8:am to do morning prep. AAAAND if I come in at 10:59 pm the same applies. Door’s open. I expect full service. Staff stays till 12am to close and clean. Otherwise you post signage stating “last seating at 10pm”. Just like at a bar, last call is prominently displayed and announced.

Yeah worked at the deli in HEB and gor real, they really do come in and ask for things, when they see you cleaning the slower. Bjt the boss would get mad because we sis kn fact break down to close, BEFORE closing time so... we were in fact in the wring because business hours aren't employee hours, they are hours for BUSINESS, meaning purchasing. So yeah, customers can dead ass walk in 1 minute before closing and still get service, cuz that's literally what the definition of business hours meant

@nemovi5379 that's to adhere to state and federal drinking laws though.... and mkst times they will sell other non-alcoholic drinks or food, if they remain open after the designated consumption cut off. TABC laws definitely compliment consumer laws, but they do not dictate basic consumer laws. Open for business means exactly that... change the business hours if you wanna be home earlier but you still are expected to provide service during open business hours.

I used to have this problem in my old retail job. We would constantly announce closing time was 10pm then rush around the store telling people personally the store closes at 10pm. At 10pm people are still walking around picking stuff up and I would tell them the checkouts close in 5minutes. 15minutes later the checkouts will be closed and cleared of cash and you’d get the “customer” come down asking why no checkouts are open and you’d have to get security to throw them out.

The kitchen has already been cleaned, the till has been cashed out, and closing duties are being completed around you. The service industry environment is so different in different places, or at least than it was when i grew up. The posted hours weren't when the lights went off, though no new customers were allowed. Cleanup and shutdown was paid and happened after those closing hours. I keep getting told that is not the case anymore.

It’s because of budget. The owner or the store doesn’t want to pay for extra time. Now if a store schedules their closers for after closing time after the doors are shut that is a different situation, however you will be asked to leave at closing in almost every situation.

Yeah the restaurant I worked at had a hard kitchen close time but you better believe I was stuck there until my customers chose to leave because the bar stayed open a few hours later than the kitchen. Customers could hang out as long as they wanted and I would have for sure been fired for pressuring them to leave.

When she said OK and walked away I thought she was going to come back with some spray cleaner to clean the table. Nope...turning off the light and turning on the alarm was priceless!!! When I worked at one of my local dollar tree stores we had people try to come in when it was 10 minutes till closing time so the assistant manager would lock the doors at that time, open everybody's till, count it out, fill out the paperwork and be out exactly when the store closes. You wouldn't believe the amount of entitled customers who pitched a fit about us closing exactly on the dot of closing time. They would show us their watch and we would show them ours. They had the nerve to call corporate. Corporate would be like we'll talk to them...and that would be it. Let me tell you how much I despise people who do this. It's rude and inconsiderate. Everybody should work in retail or in fast food once in their life to see how it feels to have someone come in at the last minute and expect full service from the employees. That would be an eye opening experience.

Last I knew, if you were in by closing time, you were still able to order whatever. I remember one night I was with my dad as he was visiting with his friend who owned a restaurant. It was almost 11pm. The waitresses (young girls late teens/early 20s)were standing around waiting for closing time and asked what happened if someone came in RIGHT before 11pm. He told them they were expected to serve them. Wouldn't you know it, a whole family walked in at like 10:58 ready to order dinner? And they had to serve them the full meal.

Both are wrong here - customer should not have walked in 25 minutes before closing expecting to be able to have a long sitdown dinner. But restaurant/server should not be turning the lights off right at closing. If the restaurant wants the servers gone at a certain hour, you set your closing time an hour before the desired lights-off time.

Back when I worked at taco bell, we had this stupid clause that management forced on us. When midnight hit, if there were ANY cars in the drive thru (speaker or window) we were not allowed to close until the drive thru cleared. There were nights where we would be open more than an hour past close because drunks and stoners kept zerging our drive thru. Management was pissed that we stayed so late every night and couldn't figure out why we couldn't get out before 1 am...

As someone who has worked in the restaurant industry for multiple years including fine dining restaurants this is not funny and is painfully true…there’s always an entitled person walking thru the door with less than half an hour on the clock before closing expecting full service when the kitchen has just about shut down and sent half the staff home already. They sit there thinking they are entitled to slave you for hours longer than your scheduled than try to leave a terrible tip I’ve seen it time and time again very few people who icon in close to closing time are actually accommodating of this staff serving them even after being told the kitchen is pretty much shut down for the night.
