For those wondering, the reason his name is localized as Gaming instead of Jiaming, it’s likely because it is very intentionally the Cantonese pronounciation. Lion dancing is more of a Southern Chinese thing than it is Northern, and the design of his lion mask is definitely more in line with the Southern styles. He also mentions eating dim sum here, and dim sum is explicitly cuisine originating from Guangdong (Canton)

I was very confused because after his drip everyone was saying it is meant to be Cantonese pronunciation and then the devs on stream said it in what I heard was the Mandarin way. So I got ultra confused about which way it is meant to be said. I was not sure if it was said like Jiaming by the devs because that was the way they intended for it to be said or just because that is how it is said in their dialect and they forgot to say it in the dialect they want people want to pronounce it in.

But his name is pronounced as the mandarin version in cn voicelines (jiaming). So I think both pronunciations would be fine. One thing I find really cool abt his voicelines in the cn trailer is that you can tell he speak Cantonese from the phrases he says and the way he talks (I think you can call it an accent? Idk) which I find rlly cool bc none of the other characters have an accent or says things in a way that would hint at which province the character may be from if they were real life Chinese ppl.

When I was a kid and we'd visit relatives during Lunar New Year, there was one year where a relative hired a Lion Dance troupe to perform for the whole extended family. That was a really nice and expensive thing for them to do (most people will only ever see Lion Dancers performing at at large shopping malls or at a fancy restaruant opening). The dancers not only danced, they peeled mandarin oranges and a pomelo (basically the lion 'eats' a fruit so the dancers can peel it and then 'spits' out the peeled fruit to the audience), as well as jumped high to reach hanging ang pow/red money packet. Many of the elderly family members have passed away since then but seeing Gaming made me think about that special day. I know it's a bit early but I want to wish Happy Lunar New Year to the Genshin Impact team at Hoyoverse and say Thank You for reminding me of some lovely memories.

I grew up in Hong Kong and haven't been there for quite a long time now. Ga-ming's moves and dances remind me of Chinese New Year when our apartment complex would host a lion dragon dance. As I child I always thought they were real creatures and when I found out they were humans, I wanted to learn it. Thank you Mihoyo for reminding me of those days.
