The best part of this is why. Rory is a huge piece of shit who insisted on getting all the questions ahead of time. The episodes he was on all played out like this, with him trying to one-up Stephen on things he learned on wikipedia the night before. Sean, knowing this, deliberately rained on his parade.

@@philm94 it's now generally thought that the person who got the questions ahead of time was most likely John Sessions. Apparently Dara o Briain has said in a podcast that the person who knew the questions ahead of time is now deceased. Everyone just hates on Rory because the role of the really knowledgeable one on the show was for Stephen, not the panelists. That and the fact that Rory seemed to think it was a show to prove how knowledgeable he was rather than a comedic experience.

I see Sean as the aggregation of all the funniest drinking buddies that I've ever had. It's just silly humour that in theory anyone could come up with in a goofy moment, but every now and then you perceive the deeper level - and his ability to improvise over and over again shows his skill.

I always liked Sean Lock, but my respect and admiration for him rose considerably after his 'portal to the underworld' joke that effectively cut off that insufferable Rory McGrath being a self-flagellating bore. Most QI fans suspect that McGrath was the 'unnamed guest' who demanded to know what all the questions would be for each show they appeared on in advance, so they could research them and make themselves look super-clever by apparently knowing almost all of the answers. And, having watched that particular show in full, I can attest McGrath had been smug and very condescending right from the start. Sean was THE ONLY PERSON on that panel who finally stood up to him and knocked him off his pedestal, because Sean was a good man who believed everyone should share the spotlight, not just one self-important prick who thought he was better than everyone else. He could've even been nasty about it, but no - he took the diplomatic route instead, and used humour rather than humiliation so there would be no uncomfortable atmosphere afterwards. The man was a class act, and was taken far too soon.

@@janchapman3445 Honestly, in light of what McGrath had been doing up until that point, that was mild - by ANY comedian's standards, not just Sean's. He'd been condescending to other panel members, 'correcting' their answers when he decided they hadn't got them as 'right' as they could've been, and just generally taking any and every opportunity to make himself look like the cleverest dick in the room - even if that was at the expense of making it look like he'd just 'schooled' another panel member. He was OBNOXIOUS. I had heard it was actually John Sessions who was the 'unnamed cribber' on QI now - but honestly, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if McGrath didn't also pull the same stunt. He was never invited back after this one appearance, so there's that...

@@LaTruiteuhI don't envy being you and finding the show worse with Stephen gone, the Show is JUST as good with Sandy on, no quality drop at all Sandy knocks it outta the park just like Stephen does. There's no good reason not to watch QI with Sandy as host unless you don't like her or just dislike the fact that a woman is hosting it. Now i'm not saying that is the case with you, it might be that you just have too much of an attachment to tv shows remaining the same and not letting them change the way their supposed to.

@@Keyecomposer It's a personal preference, and I tend to agree that Sandy was a good guest. (but doesn't own the show as Stephen did) Maybe there is some misogyny in my personal preferences, maybe it's just homophobia, I will never admit to that of course. Maybe it's just because all the interesting facts are handled already. Maybe the production has made other changes behind the screen, but even Allen doesn't seem as inspired as he was before. So maybe he has misogynistic reasons for that too?

Rory: The Sea Crow in latin is "Phalacrocorax Carbo", and the Shag is called "Phalacrocorax Aristotelis" which has a distinguishable white face. Stephen: Sean do you remember anything he said? Sean: He said something about calcium and uh there's a tree with a funny name, I don't know, koalas invented rice?
