I just love how happy Stephen is when Trevor starts singing. I mean if you think about it, Stephen is basically a linguistics expert, and has travelled the world, writing books and giving talks all about the history and evolution and extinction of language. Language is his JAM. So to hear one which is that old, which he'd be unlikely to hear unless he went on a VERY long trip - he's in heaven. Sandi, on the other hand, has just decided that there are more seductive languages than French.

Many years ago, as a lawyer, I acted for a former WW2Fighter Pilot, (his daughter was a good friend) he was applying for a pension as a disabled serviceman. He told me that while on “Operations” he drank at least a minimum of a bottle of Vodka or Whisky a day, often 2 or more depending on the operation. He described 2 “missions” for which he had been decorated. It turned out, that alcoholism was a recognised war injury for pilots, he got his pension with no problems!

Working in a laser optics lab for safety we have a small shielding block to put in front of the laser emitter. This is to prevent someone being accidently blinded while working on the mounting hardware (which is often because it is horrible hardware) if something happens and the laser is turned on by the monitor & control system. Therefore, on the fine motor mount ('on a lazy laser raiser') we have the block to stop the laser beam ('lies the laser ray eraser'). There is your context!

An Irish mate of mine would drink phenomenal amounts of Guinness. On his 31st Birthday, he drank 31 pints over the course of a day and still walked out - albeit with a pronounced list. Some months later he left the pub and crossed an unlit A road. He was hit by a Mk1 Land-rover doing over 50 mph. The land-rover was an insurance write-off, but he survived with no broken bones - just a ruptured spleen. We visited him in hospital a day or later, and left him a Nintendo game to pass the time. He laughed until he pulled his stitches, and the nurse threw us out. The game? "Crash dummies"!

51:31 she’s actually correct I think. iirc Kangaroos, like the western reds, can halt the development of the zygote for a year or so. I remember it being called diapause or similar. It’s an adaptation to drought and irregular wet periods. And when there are good conditions the zygote kicks back into gear and starts developing to take advantage the extra feed that will grow.

Synes in norwegian is the verb to know in opinion, like English sense, I perceive, reckon...many norse words were adopted into scottish bc protracted trade and families, inter married. I'm Canadian and both western norwegian and northeastern scottish and both sides have both sides right up into modern times. So auld Lang syne to me suggests reflecting on our perception of times gone passed. Remembering the old days. Makes sense yes?

One of the more clever sobriety tests I've seen on cop videos is to ask the presumably inebriated person to say the alphabet from F to T, and then ask them to count backwards from 68 to 50. They can usually do the first part correctly, but when they start counting backwards it'll be 68 ... 59 G H. Think about the syllables involved there. First step - from F to T increasing. Second step - counting down to FifTy nine and then if you're not paying attention you start with the alphabet again.

I have a small camera set up in my home but turned the monitoring off because if the sun moved it set an alert on my phone or the curtains and wind. He put my shit down strolled out the door saying I couldn't prove he was in my place. So we had video of him climbing in and helping himself to my stuff. The idiot had my Playstation 2 that I got for free under his arm and hadn't even touched my PS5 as well. And this was when they were in short supply.

I love that they count Frankie as a “special guest” just like the movie stars they’ve had on. Legend!

Hate to tell Alan Davies but he's wrong about the cannabis being seven times worse than tobacco. I we have legal cannabis and we grow organic in Washington State. Doctors here know that it is not bad for you. Their actually thrilled because severe road accidents have gone down and people aren't using opioids the way they were. Win win.

55:55 many years ago while driving in the country, I saw a big cluster of butterflies swarming and flying around something in the road. When I got up close I was fairly disgusted to see that someone had thrown a poopy diaper out their car window. That was more disgusting than the fact that there were butterflies feeding on it.

Love this video. Just wanted to add that kangaroos can have embrionic diapause - delayed implantation. I'm a fan of Stephen but in this case, he dismissed her thought thinking that it was mutually exclusive to what he wanted to talk about.

While I don't usually like Trevor Noah's comedic take on most things, he seems to be a very nice and interesting person in everyday life. If I had not seen his comedy here in the US, but seen him here first, I would really look forward to seeing him in other things. I guess that is why I love British/UK comedy so much more than any here in the US...other folks think I am nuts. They don't see the humor.

Now I wonder if being extremely drunk can help prevent infections. Imagine if the way to deal with Corona would have been to make everyone in the world drunk for an entire month.

Ethanol is used to clean bacteria, so there might be something to that.

Yeah I know it kills bacteria. It's also used to preserve food and used in some medicines and sanitisers. But I always though the level of blood alcohol was way too low to have any effect (since it would kill your own cells otherwise) but the study seems to suggest it actually helps. I now also wonder if drinking alcohol can prevent food poisoning. Especially since it would be more concentrated in the stomach. @@BaldMancTwat
