With the horizontal approach, what is happening within those playlists when they are playing? They are collections of short audio files....presumably they are shorter than a loop? Are they arranged in a "linked list", one after the other? Or vertically arranged?

Yeah I like to keep them as short as possible. The shorter each segment, the quicker the music can switch to another playlist. I cover this conceptually in kzbin.info/www/bejne/noqYm6lmq52Aqc0. And I go into a lot more detail in Wwise in episodes 9 and 10 of that video series (although those episodes cover a more advanced horizontal technique, but the basic principles remain the same).
