Video games offer unique challenges to crafting sounds and music, because timing them is dependent on a player's actions. In this collaboration with FMOD, I'll show you what it means to craft a soundtrack that adapts to the variable pace of a video game! Thanks to the team at Firelight Technologies for helping create this!
Visit fmod.com/ to learn more about using FMOD for your adaptive audio projects.

The whole video's point is to get to the fmod ad. So the whole video is an ad, that's why it stays very relevant to the topic, the whole video was built around it.

I never expected FMOD to sponsor a video... I have used FMOD to implement audio in multiple things, but didnt really think of it as something youd see as a sponsor.

Typically if players are to collect multiple items with a sound effect, they would just change the pitch by a half tone and even sometimes add a tiny jingle if you collect everything (like red coins in Mario)

I have to think of the Sly Cooper games where the general level theme would get naturally more aggressive and energetic whenever the protagonist got into a fight with an enemy. Or C&C Red Alert 3 where the combat music would get more intense and epic the more fighting was going on.

like, look, i really appreciate your videos, and i found this very instructional and interesting, but you really do talk about how easy fmod is to use, and how great the ui is, without even once showing me what it looks like. As a viewer, I don't have any reason to believe that you've ever touched this piece of software, even though you try (successfully) to make the ad very much a part of your video. But, I mean, maybe there's something I don't know. Maybe fmod looked at a cut of this video and said "make up look better!" and that's why it sounds the way it does. idk man, it doesn't totally ruin the rest of the good video for me, I still like your explanations of things, and I still like your channel. keep up the good work!

the part with the cat bell i would do something different. changing the pitch and sound could lose the association with that sound. i would change the sound entirely to make it more subtle. an example would be the mario coins that went from an ear piercing 8 bit sound to a quiet "pling" in newer games or dk country bananas are also pretty good

1:43, hardly anyone does that though, it's generally not fit to the timing of the animation like this. I was blown away when I realized that in Mario Maker 2, the sound effect when placing an object changes pitch to follow the music track's (inaudible) "foreground", while a quiet "background" instrumental is always playing. Basically, spamming items in the editor makes a complete instrumental track. It's real neat.

It's seemless & related to the topic, not obnoxious & intrusive (sick of Nord VPN sponsors on music channel videos, or Raid Shadow Legends during Pokémon videos) The only other seemless one I've seen is a guy with a G-Fuel sponsor during a Pokémon video, where he drinks it & it heals his HP bar & they're usually video game themed versions of their drinks. Pretty clever.

now this is how a sponsorship should work. The basic education of how you can do it yourself is there, but the service adds a reason and ease in upgrading without sounding like a requirement unless you need the higher levels. And yea, as a one man game dev, I'm probably going to use this. _Even then, how many of you indie developers have a budget above $500,000?_

I really love this video and the insight it provides! Though, I'd disagree on the solution to that fourth game. We have plenty of games to refer to with basic collectibles that you pick up in droves, but only play one sound every time. Mario, for example, has it's coins. Even in the very first game, most people find the sound of getting a coin satisfying, especially in large numbers. I think this is because the first portion of the sound (before it fades away) chains perfectly into itself, creating what almost seems like a new sound altogether when you collect a lot in a row. If the pitch of that sound was constantly changing, it'd be more likely to come off as annoying. Sorry if I'm explaining this poorly, I'm not well versed in the terminology of this topic. I hope I added something to the conversation, though!
