Vertical Jigging Big Lake Trout - Tips and Tricks - Part One

Want to learn how to vertical jig for lake trout in the summer? This series of videos might help. I filmed this multi-part series on Lake Champlain. Each part will offer various tips and techniques that I have learned over the years. In this video, a late morning turned out to be more productive than I expected it to be. After having moat trailer issues on the 3.5-hour drive and getting to Vermont at 1am, I wasn't eager to get up at the crack of dawn. Given the good fishing and flat calm lake, I wish I had. Oh well. Just a follow up comment while I’m still watching… perhaps consider a dedicated GoPro or camera up close on the humminbird to show us what you’re seeing. Especially helpful if you could sync that footage while your commenting on what you see on your graph. I’d be very interested, so I can look for the same on mine.😊

So why don't you want to eat those? You mentioned they are eating smelt and something else. Why is that bad and where would you eat lake trout from?

@@TMOFishing I remember as a kid i was on a Canada trip with my dad and he caught one and we ended up cooking it over a open fire in foil with some lemon and dill and my dad says he remembers it as some of the best fish he ever had.

Trebles, but when the fish are really hungry and getting the lures deep I will switch to the single hooked ones to try and reduce gill hooking then.

Why wouldn't you eat these fish, sounds like it's what the feed on? Just curious, I fish this lake all the time and think about it all the time.

I don't enjoy the taste of the. They are strong and oily. Some people like them though.

Big fish in warm water taste like mud and moss. They're eating junk at the bottom of the lake. You can treat them with brine and smoke them which helps but not entirely. When the water is cold in winter or spring, they actually taste fine. I've caught kokanee in warmer water and they lso tasted like mud.

Try reeling those fish instead of stressing them for so long. You might find that you wont have to revive for 20 minutes.

Your notion on how lake trout expel their swim bladder is wrong. Lakers can expel as fast as they can swim. I assure you, you can not reel them in faster than they can swim. 1- Lakers feed up in the water column sometimes coming from 100+ feet to bait 50 ft below the surface. 2 - we fish in very clear water on Lake Michigan and on several occasions we have seen schools of Lakers following the fish we are fighting up to the surface from 100+ feet. We can spend a minute taking pictures then releasing the fish and it will dart to the depths almost immediately. You are putting way to much stress fighting the fish fighting the way you do. Do not take this as criticism but education. Please do some research and experimenting on your own. If you do happen to kill a fish (which you won’t) they are excellent table fair if handled properly ie bleed out and put on ice. Do not try and keep them alive in the live well they will die and turn soft fast.

I've been fishing for lake trout for 40 years, and guiding for 15 years. I think my research is quite extensive. The techniques you recommend routinely kill fish on our lakes. My information is based on years of my own experience and from watching the hundreds of other lake trout fishermen out here daily. Crank them up too fast and they're dead. If a broken swim bladder doesn't kill them, coming up from 50 degree water into 77 degree water will. I've accidental killed plenty of lakers over the years (and brought them home to eat) and every one had a broken swim bladder and a belly full of air. There's a big difference between self-regulating air in their swim bladder while swimming and trying to regulate it under stress. Maybe you should talk with more people who have already done the research. I'll assume you're just trying to help rather than feed your ego and say thank you for the feedback and for watching. 👍

If your talking summer fishing then yes warmer water temps do play a roll. Let’s assume your fishing in 100ft of water. Generally on average the thermocline will set up around 50 ft. Obviously that verys but let’s just say that’s where it is on average. Your way, you are letting the fish completely exhaust itself for 50 percent of the time in the warmer water. Also how much damage is your hook doing while you let the fish thrash around for twenty minutes? A steady retrieve and a quick release is not going to harm the fish. Your way is slow and painful. Perch walleye bass yes they will die if brought up from deep water but they cannot purge their swim bladders like lakers. Anyway good luck.
