We're running 22-24lbs/head/day on baled hay through the winter - this is for Aberdeen Angus though (smaller than yours). They do have a fair amount of waste depending on the feeder that we use and how we stretch the replenishment. I wish that I could grind/mix just because of the higher value and ease of digestion! Great Video!

Great video, looks like you have everything set up to do as much by yourself as possible. Beautiful scenery. You can keep the cold weather. SW MO is as cold as I want. Background stockers 6 mos of year. Don’t have any winter feeding, at 74, not looking for any.

I hear ya! I don’t want the winter weather either but that’s where my great grandparents settled so I’m stuck here. Hahaha

Wish I could justify a mixer. It would certainly make feeding easier. Great video.

When we had a drought year I figured what it would cost to buy hay verses buying straw. The difference paid for the mixer wagon. Now we can mix hay, straw and silage adding a liquid feed for a good total ration saving money every year on feed costs. Hope that helps you make the decision.

Don't know where your from but ND has trees looking like yours. Am 72 and retired now but used to finish dairy calves using a Patz vertical grinder. They really do a good job of mixing feed. Merry Christmas everyone!

Thank you and Merry Christmas to you too. We are in west central ND.

Thanks for the demonstration, that’s pretty cool. I think a mixer like that would be so nice to cut down on feed waste and be able to control there diet. Take and have a good week!

Maybe I need a NDE currently have a single screw Jay Lor that I just put all new knives in. Grinding an 1800 lb bale of grassy year old hay, then adding 1500lb of wet corn gluten and 2500 lbs of corn silage. If I don’t let it work on the bale for at least 30 minutes it tends to push all the hay to the outside and the silage and gluten to the center and give me a really poor mix. So I put a bale in and go do something else for a little bit. As long as I let the hay grind a while it mixes really good feed. Currently feeding 100lb of this mix per head every other day to spring calvers on used up corn stalks. There is a fair amount of water in the gluten and silage. There are no commercial hay grinders in this part of the world (Central IN) so that’s not an option, wish it was.

My mixer wagon will do the same thing. I have to be careful of what kind of hay I grind. Jay Lor is a very good wagon too. Maybe if we had dual screw but that adds lots of cash. I will stay with my single screw. Haha. Have a good one!

I can’t compare on the feed ration part as I only have 5 cows & calf’s, and 3 breeding bulls I lease. But... The sight of your fat black cattle lined up feeding is a damn beautiful sight right there. 🇺🇸🤟

We don't do any wet feed.. I wish we were set up for it.. but dry grass hay or grass/oat mix and feed ground oats mixed with commercial stocker/grower for the cows. At the moment, still on pasture, but pretty much zero nutritional value, just green water.

Well your saving money if you can graze yet. Take care.

Farming is in that very grey industry as far as safety practices are concerned....you have that pto...grinder etc. Stay safe...! Yes a frosty morning....how old is that barn/building at the end...?

That barn has writing on the inside from people before my parents owned it at a very young age. I’m guessing it’s over 100 years old.
