Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy

Denver Health's weight-loss surgeons perform the vertical sleeve gastrectomy (also called Gastric Sleeve) for severely overweight patients. During this minimally invasive procedure, about 75% of the stomach is removed to create a long "sleeve"-shaped stomach. Following surgery, patients can only eat very small amounts of food at one time and will feel full for several hours therefore limiting the amount of calories consumed.

The bowl movement happens if you are also on a medication that is prescribed for weight loss too such as Phentiamrine too! i know this has happened to myself i had to ask about it and I been wanting the sleeve or anything done and now am taking a stool softner and and had to make sure i keep my protein intake up also, but so far my primary is a dumb ass will not refer me out yet and have 97 or 98 lbs to loose!

My dad had the gastric sleeve 8 years ago. The only downside is he can only et or drink. He cannot do both.

​@tawogtrailers a patient should not drink water while eating because it fills the small area that needs to be filled with nutritious foods. It can also make food slide through too quickly, which means it's not digested well. The rule for bariatric patients is to drink, wait 30 minutes, eat their meal and then wait 30 minutes.

I got diagnosed with IBD more specifically ulcerative colitis in early 2021 and was wondering if it would still be possible to get a gastric sleeve with this condition? And if so would there be complications?

Yes, Dr. Altamirano does it at the same time he is doing the sleeve. I think he only charges about $300 (2023) as he is doing the sleeve surgery, because it can cause reflux if not done.

After Having gastric sleeve surgery I’ve noticed my bowel movements are only maybe once a week, is this normal?

Thank you Sheila for your question! Our experts in the Denver Health Bariatric Surgery Center said that sometimes after surgery you can experience a change in the frequency of bowel movements. This is especially true with the Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass, though it can happen with the Gastric Sleeve surgery as well. If you had a bowel movement every day before surgery, it may be every 2-3 days after surgery. If you have bowel movements less frequently than daily, you may need to take medication like “MiraLAX” to keep from becoming constipated, but please consult with your medical provider before doing that. It’s most common for the month or so immediately after surgery because your provider will have you concentrating more on protein and less on fiber. This will usually resolve once you are able to eat more fiber. No, everyone is suppose to have 3 to 4 bowel movements a day. Make sure you are eat plenty of green leaf vegetables and certain fruits. Spinach leaves,Kale,Blueberries,Raspberries,Strawberries. Collard green,Mustard, Turnip
