Was Shane just casually standing on littlerocks keel. Really enjoy these archaeological explorations fascinating to see every nook and cranny of these ships

Mrmartins345. The plans state what I'm walking on is the rider plate. The keel is just below this plate. Thanks for your support and for watching!

Those number on the shelf are called national stock number,it makes it easier for the navy and military in general use it to standardized supplies through out the military.
@SomeRandomHuman7173 ай бұрын
@5:54 Not to be pedantic, but what's written on the shelves is more accurately the "federal stock number." In the mid-70s (when Little Rock was decommissioned) they added the two-digit nation code/country code and once that was added it was renamed the National Stock Number. Looks like the crew didn't see the need to update the handwritten FSNs to NSNs.
@johndaley91883 ай бұрын
Agree. I do remember the transition right about the time I was getting out. The 2 extra digits I believe were disposition codes. 2F-repairable, 1N-dispose.

Thanks Stephen...appreciate it...sometimes it's difficult to remember when you're heading down to places like this, as you're focused on safety and taking it all in. If the word\phrase isn't part of everyday lexicon...I usually fumble around!

You know, I was always wondering what was at the bow of a ship. I know that the military doesn't waste any space on anything, but I never guessed what was on a ship. All the books I have read, none of them really mentioned this space. Thank You for showing me this. I thought it was a great video!

You're welcome Larry...happy to bring it to you...going down into that space is really interesting, and very behind the scenes! It's the top of the spine so to speak, and important to keep monitoring it for incursions!

We had magazine access down from 2nd deck to 7th deck on CV-64. We had steel rope nets on every level with a square cut out for the ladder to pass through. Had to open a hatch on every deck.

I would love to go down into those spaces, had confined space training and used the same safety gear for monitoring for 13 years while cleaning/ painting underground gas vaults for a utility company. I would volunteer to access those spaces with Lucas for sure.

reclusivegrub! Thanks for reaching out and letting me know! It would be great to have you get into some of those spaces, and maybe give us tips about how to paint them, and what products to use that can help stabilize some of the degradation. Let me know if you want to come in. We'll have a stateroom ready for you so you can spend a night or two onboard! Thanks for watching!

I think this is going to be pretty much like the the ladder way in the 963 class ships up in the bow. There was a hatch leading to ladder way from the weather deck all the way down to the sonar dome control station all the spaces were sonar spaces with the all the electronic cabinets for the SQS-53a sonar system and also the WQC-2 underwater telephone.
@BuffaloNavalPark3 ай бұрын
Hmmm...you'll find out Andrew! A tad bit larger spaces...I've shown some of the sonar spaces on USS The Sullivans before. Not much room to maneuver!

On first platform the bins are marked with National Stock Numbers (NSN). Format xxxx-xx-xxxx. They are not serial numbers. NSNs are assigned to virtually every repair/replacement part. The first 4 numbers identifies the type of part. An example would be 5960, which could possibly be a election tube or related part. True story, during my early sailor days I was told to order some repair parts for a radar. I turned in the forms and later that day, the supply officer informed the EMO one of his ETs (me) was trying to buy the entire radar. I misread the docs and wrote down the wrong NSN. Oops. Measure twice, cut once applies.

Shane there’s a scene in the Kevin Costner film Waterworld of a guy that lives in a ships tank measuring the oil and when you were all the way at the bottom you reminded of that movie. On a serious note though I noticed the decks up forward seem to be a lot taller, so you’re even further down than it looks.
@BuffaloNavalPark3 ай бұрын
I've never seen that movie, but thanks for sharing cmcb7230! It's amazing how heading down is so tight, and then it just opens up down there on what would be the 2nd platform! Pretty amazing stuff...glad you came along for the ride!

Hey greg...we do have a dedicated space for flags already - in the sail loft area...I did a video with a guy named Ralph in 2023 where we show all the cubby holes for the flags. A lot of stores up forward though for sure!

What’s the difference between a deck and a platform?
@johndaley91883 ай бұрын
@@jwilder47 Here's a guess. The keel is a structure that the ship is built on. Is the platform simply the top of the keel?
@BuffaloNavalPark3 ай бұрын
Thanks for asking. Decks are below the main deck (as opposed to the 01, 02, et cetera above the main deck), and decks run the length of the ship - at least from the main perpendiculars fore and aft. Platforms are decks that get cut in half - usually because of the main engineering spaces - so they don't run the length of the ship like decks do. Hope that helps!
@BuffaloNavalPark3 ай бұрын
Good thought...decks are like the main deck...usually running the whole length of the ship - platforms get cut in half - usually because of the engineering spaces...so, they are not continuous like decks are...
