@@BrandonTLuong I’m helping consolidate and report on the data, but going to keep running the second iteration of the pan (mentioned in this video). Originally I was going to test this version (third iteration), but we wanted to get it on cars with coilovers and stickier tires vs my tame, stock-ish setup. So Tor and some other folks are going to run this version and we’ll see how it does with higher loads.

Since you love questions, when you move to a cast version, would you consider incorporating cooling fins, kind of like how the factory S2000 oil pan has? The beauty of this question is that you can ignore it.

I've got question What about factory OEM oil dipstick measurements? Any needs to manufacture a new scale or OEM will be able to read the amount of the oil level correctly?
@900BRZ
@900BRZ 4 ай бұрын
The factory dipstick is still usable as is. It’s designed to tell you the “maximum” oil level in the engine based on protecting the oil from reaching too high up in the engine and contacting the crankshaft. We will have more oil volume at the same level at the dipstick, but we’re ultimately just trying to the oil reaching too high in the engine, so that’s not a problem.

If you take a look at the engine block, the actual sealing surface due to casting is quite small. We wanted to do something like that but felt it best to keep it OEM-esque in this regard as having a pan that continually leaks is quite frustrating. It's not a nice flange on the engine side of things. Sorry.

The pan looks awesome guys! I will definitely be picking one up when they go into production and I’m looking forward to not having to worry so much about blowing up my engine I will say though that personally I would have preferred to lose a little capacity if it meant I could retain the OE heat shields. I’m not very concerned with overall oil temps increasing, especially since I just installed an oil cooler. I do have a bit of a concern though with the extremely high air barrier temps conducting heat into the pan, potentially coking oil along that wall adjacent to the header. Regardless I still believe in your development and will absolutely be running one of these on my car.

Second that! Here’s hoping Jesse from JDL sends Verus some scans or headers for testing. I too have the JDL catted UEL. From looking at my setup, the JDL header creates more room than stock. Stock is V-shaped around the pan, and UEL is more boxy. Either this pan fits as is, or significantly more capacity can be had with a design specific to UEL.

Out of curiousity, why was the extra 1.3L size chosen? I hear that only an extra 0.5-1.0L is needed(unless my understanding is wrong). Could it be possible to make it only 1.0L larger instead and make the pan sit just a tad further away from the exhaust manifold and possibly with the heat shield in place? Maybe you could add some cooling fins while your at it.(although not that necessary since oil coolers exist) Edit: Some cars some pass smog tests if the heat shield is removed. The heat shield assists the cat to heat up to its effective heat range quicker from a cold start. So just consider that when aiming for those that have to comply with CARB, myself included.
@900BRZ
@900BRZ 4 ай бұрын
> I hear that only an extra 0.5-1.0L is needed People are still experiencing pressure drops with 1.0L overfills. The version that I tested had around 1L of extra capacity and I overfilled and there was still a little room for improvement, so Verus pushed a little harder.
@VerusEngineering
@VerusEngineering 4 ай бұрын
We maximized the available area. There is no reason beyond that. If we leave the heat shield in place, we would be taking a massive area out of the pan, unfortunately. The heat shield is huge. Maybe their is a way to cut the heat shield where the pan is at and leave it on the outside to pass CARB and run the pan? Are inspectors taking off the underbody panels too now?

Question number three - does the increased oil volume, would be a negative for oil pump or it doesn't really matter? Would it support OEM stock oil plug & washer?
@900BRZ
@900BRZ 4 ай бұрын
The goal is to always have oil available to the pump and, in this car, you need better engine oil return (expensive/complicated) or more oil (cheaper/simpler) in order to achieve that. There’s no downside to more oil volume and actually only upsides: with more oil volume you have more thermal mass to handle higher heat.

Air gap is a great thermal insulator. Leave the oil pan a two-piece design. A one-piece pan will be a cleaning problem for the inevitable rod knock and bearing debris inside an intricate part. Will be much easier to clean a two-piece pan and guarantee cleanliness to the customer. Eventually, casting a two-piece pan will also be easier than a one-piece pan with internal details. Rubber flaps are successfully used in various applications, introduced by Cosworth to the Subaru world some 15 years ago, and now used by IAG and Torque Solutions in their products.

It would be nice if it's able to retain the header heat shield while having a bit lesser oil capacity. Because i am a daily driver, most of the time could be in a slow moving heavy traffic or caught in a standstill traffic. A lot of heat generated could quickly get trapped inside engine bay and potentially heating up the oil pan too. Compare to car on the move or in track where airflow will help to dissipate heat as per said air barrier.

So, in the midwest, it's very easy to get 6-8 track days throughout the year just by scheduling them on cooler days, ambient temps between 60-70 degrees. I don't have an oil cooler and my oil temps stay between 255-265. Halfway through the session I'll do a cooldown lap to bring it down to 225-235, and that's been good enough. Waterford Hills Autobahn North and South Grattan Gingerman M1 Concourse Nelson Ledges Probably would need a cooler for Road America though

With the factory heat exchanger, the oil temperature doesn't depend much on the ambient temperature. I had the same 260ish in 50°F ambient and 110°F ambient. That being said, the conventional wisdom is that at 260°F the oil pressure is too low for these engines unless you're running something like 10w-60

What if this fixes it? We would love to but you'd have to pull the entire front cover to get to the pickup. We believe that most owners would not want to do that amount of work vs just a pan swap.

I'm intriguing to know if the oil level with these that sits in the engine (NOT capacity) is the same as stock level? I want to see an improvement without 'gaming the system' as such.
@VerusEngineering

I'm not sure what you mean by that? We do not plan on overfilling the oil level and the lower pan itself holds well over a liter more fluid.

Not to our knowledge. From all the testing 900BRZ has done, the baffles on the market don't seem to do much.

The down side up makes it easier to see the engine cooling problems of a flat engine ie, look how close the exhaust headers are to the sump, only a bees dick away. Therefore , of cause the oil is a heat sink and accumulates heat fro the engine . This part however is a big step towards sorting these engines out . ❤️🇦🇺👍

Do you see any potential drawbacks of the design you can think of? I'm not criticising by any means, just wonder if, except the heat, mitigated by oil cooler, there might be any potential issue whatsoever, that is invisible to normal John. Cheers and looking forward :)

Porsche figured it out by adding a very expensive dry sump to their cars. Subaru can't charge $60k+ for their vehicles, so they can't justify developing that.

I don’t understand how the engineers of a multibillion dollar company (in this case, Toyota & Subaru) can’t design a flawless engine (or at least fix the oil starvation issue) but somehow a small group of engineers (Verus Engineering) can? Lol. It’s almost like car manufacturers purposely build flawed cars so they become too problematic/expensive to own for long periods of time (hence forcing you to either spend more money on repairs or upgrading to a newer model). Gone are the days where you could put a million miles on your car without even needing to change the oil (hyperbole).
@VerusEngineering

Different targets, different goals. A multibillion dollar company is looking to cut every cost and make a car for the general public that doesn't take the car on track.
