Hi High Feller, I use egg boxes (remove any paper stick on lables) blended up instead of paper. Seems to be able to blend without water as its chunky so you can make up "dry" batches ready for when you need some.. Saves keeping batches of soggy paper lying around. (Take the eggs out as well!)🙄 Cheers Andy

Brilliant, Dylan is well impressed with it. He's been using some cheap ready mixed filler on his layout so far, but I bet he tries this next time. I'll probably try it on mine, once I get to the scenery stage...cheers James 🙂👍

That’s great to hear James & Dylan. It’s super cheap and holds shape while drying well. 😁👍

@HighFell we'll certainly give it a try. I just need to get back to mine, I haven't touched it for months. I really must get some track down 🙂👍

I think this is well within the capabilities of almost all modellers, not everyone can build locos or rolling stock but saving on scenery products is a great way to keeps costs of the hobby down. Thanks Anth 😁👍

For some reason YT deleted my first witty reply! Anyway it’s only paper so less dangerous than 3d printing resin, but I think Uranium is less toxic than that 😂

@ I hate it when it does that! Hope they don’t delete this comment or you’ll never know that I hate it when they do that!

Hi to add to my comment. Having used the paper shearder, I mixed it with wall paper paste. I prefer your idea off filler. Mike

Thanks for the extra info Mike, I love it when people add their own tweaks to ideas too in the comments. The mix I do is quite clean to use on the layout so things don’t get splattered like when using plaster cloth. 😁👍

Hi I used a paper shearder, it was quick and easy
@HighFell9 күн бұрын
Is that enough to break the paper down to a pulp or have you used it as paper strips more like papier-mâché? Anything to make it quick, easy and cheap 😁

being as I'm pretty lazy, I'm just going to get a bag of Casting Plaster from MB Fibreglass, £18 for 25kg seems like a good deal to me, as the 5kg tub is £7.50. Depends how much you use it I suppose. Then I was just going to get a bag of Cellulose Insulation, chopped up paper basically!
@HighFell8 күн бұрын
You do what works for you. If casting plaster is what I know as casting plaster it goes off very very fast. In the hobby we can buy everything, even pay someone else to build a layout. 😁👍

Interesting, you could use grease proof paper to stop it from sticking to the board and also put brown poster paint in the mix so when adding scenics any uncovered bits look like soil. PVA jaycloth Alan's (Buckland Junction) method is also very useful.
@HighFell9 күн бұрын
I tried adding paint once, it’s better without though. It seems to affect the filler and it takes an age to dry. Normally I want it to stick, it was just because it was a test board I wanted to take it up. If you wax wood, it would lift straight off. That could be be useful to make scenery off the layout and add later, especially if layout is already quite developed.

As a wargamer too, small pieces of scatter terrain are really useful, your method will help a lot.

@davidwatts1871 I think there is a lot that can be shared across the various hobbies that involve miniature scenery etc. I’d really like the different parts of hobbies passing ideas about 😁

Cracking idea…….groan… how do you break the down the boxes? Do they pulp up with just soaking or do they need some mechanical assistance?

Btw, just read the description, the tile grout does work well. I've used brown tile grout for loads of the ground texture prior to static grass. especially for the dirt track under the occupational bridge, just added a bit of brown paint and it worked really well. I will probably use it for a country road by painting grey.
