I struggle so much with being daring with dark colors. I start to put a shadow down and it just looks too dark, so I wet the edges and let it blend out more softly. This type of portrait would be hard for me to pull off, the shadows seem too harsh when I try something like this, but I loved watching it :)

Great tutorial! I am beginning to dip my toe into this kind of art. I am a photographer but painting has always fascinated me. I have always had a talent for sketching so the underlying drawing (which I had never thought of) should not be difficult for me.

I saw the notification, instantly clicked on it. You are one of the biggest inspirations in my life. Every video you share and the works that you allow us the privilege of seeing renews my passion and wish to better myself. No matter the kind of struggle I have at the time, simply seeing what your art and watching a video of yours can take away massive amounts of stress. I instantly want to pick up my pencil and sketchbook so I can sketch and work alongside you. Thank you. Please, never stop doing what you love and being this beautifully inspiring person. I look forward to more from you! Now back to your video :P I've been listening as I write this comment and can I just say: Whoa. I can't even see what you're doing at the moment, but from your voice alone I can already tell that you're once again being breathtakingly perfect. Time for my sketchbook! - ganymede xoxo

Am I suddenly colorblind? Or did she call that green a beige
@olgahein43845 жыл бұрын
No you're not. Beige is one of those 'natural colors' (like ecru or sand) that are more like a variety of color shades than a certain color. Beige is known to be a pale, yellowish tinted, greyish brown. But it can also be more grey than yellos and, like in this case, slightly greenish. That aside, monitor calibrations can change the color that we see a lot, and then there's the fact that everybody sees colors (and amount of colors) differently, depending on biological precondition, sensibility of recognition and even your prime language (not necessarily your maternal language, but in most cases).

It never occurred to me to try putting in my shadows right away... This may be the approach I need to try since part of my frustration with watercolor is feeling so impatient with how much layering I have to do before I can see the piece coming together. I usually overblend and shy away from going too dark and end up with very muted colours. Thank you for this tutorial!

Arches will be too expensive for most beginners. My personal experience says to get something midrange in price (and quality). Something good enough that you don't struggle with the paper but within a reasonable price range. Signs of bad paper: * It releases pulp and get's destroyed. This might also be caused by rough brushes or too much fiddling. * It gets stained and creates hard edges extremely fast. * It warps a lot. Not entirely a bad sign, as it often depends on the thickness of the paper. Some don't mind a little warping.
@DebbieGarciaa6 жыл бұрын
Montval paper I think would be better for beginners.
@jamiececilielange52496 жыл бұрын
@@DebbieGarciaa Maybe... I mostly use the local stuff, I can't recommend much since I live in Denmark. For non-serious experiments, I use Faber Castell, though it's very thin. I also use a paper called Artistique, I like it but it also warps.
@Paine1286 жыл бұрын
I agree, I think Canson recycled watercolor paper, Montval, or Strathmore 200 series WC paper, would be good to use for beginners. Or, something more affordable locally, but has quality.
@tracy-eire5 жыл бұрын
9x12 Arches runs in the 13-15$ price range in the USA (1.08$ and 1.25$ a page), and is very good paper, but low end in price for something of its quality. It's a good mesh between price-point and high quality. I've also used Strathmore and Canson, and while I can say I use quite a lot of Strathmore precut (for the convenience of it while commuting), it's not the equal of Arches. I've also used Canson. I think Lioba is very legitimately trying to thread the needle between price-point and not frustrating the newcomer so much that they doubt their own skills and/or quit. For my money, I'd prefer the Arches, even if I cut a 9x12 down into smaller pieces for practice (as I've done with other papers before). So, yeah. Good paper goes a long way. Same with good paints.
@jamiececilielange52495 жыл бұрын
@@tracy-eire That is a lot of money for paper. I never said it was bad, it is indeed known for it's reliability, but I can get the local 300 gsm paper in A4 size for maybe 0.5$. That is the most expensive paper I buy and it doesn't leave anything to be desired. I don't know what it's called though, the local art store buys huge sheets and repacks it. Arches is not midrange, it's expensive.

My god. Arches is so damn expensive. That would be too much of a waste for beginners. I go with any watercolor paper that has at least 300 gsm and I'm using a Kuretake Gansai. It lifts really well and is forgiving for beginners
