As I watched the video, I am in doubt about his true intention of this song. As you can see, the way they entering the island is like the way african immigrants emerge to euroupe as refuges so it does not look like the way German tourists get into Tailand. The only difference is that this time white people come to black people homeland and after doing their sex and making pleasre with girls just left the country and just change the race in island, as we see there are some white newborns due to thier relationships. I am really a Rammstein fan and has followed his works since almost 10 years ago but I believe that this song is kind of critical one I think we will hear more about this song in coming days.

The video makes it really clear that it's about sex tourism. Though it in most of the video steers clear of pedophilia, except for few clips.

BTW: If you notice, in the video, they are wearing clothing that speaks to the era from 1875-1910. In some scenes, Lindemann wears a pure, unblemished, white tunic of a 19th Century Christian missionary ... which could have a very sinister double meaning, as he's instructing the very young girls.

Yeah the whole video clip is a full mocking of western people that feel like they are above other cultures and think everyone should live like they do. It has the same vibe as "America".

Als Amerikaner... 1. The first time I listened to "Ausländer," I fell in love; as someone who is conversationally-fluent in German, but also has taken classes in Spanish, French, Russian, and (of course) English, I enjoyed the lyrics and the sound of the song itself from the get-go. (Honestly, to me it feels like someone in Rammstein took a cue from Eisbrecher or KMFDM. Not a bad thing, at least to me.) 2. Auch als Amerikaner, we definitely have the "Thailand as a sex-tourism destination" stereotype here as well; it occasionally shows up in (generally adult) TV programs, as a tongue-in-cheek thing.

Hi there Dave. First time here, but certainly not the last one. My fascination for the German language has begun to grow as my fascination for Rammstein's music and performances has started to skyrocket. The truth is I can't get enough of both of them. And then, on my endeavor to try to understand their songs, since I know zilch about German I've run into your channel which it has been a godsend. You're doing a freaking awesome job. Congrats!!! Thank you for shedding light on the lyrics interpretation and most of all for breaking down the language. As for this song, I must say I digged it on my fist listen and it's been an earworm ever since. Despite the fact that the song does drift away from Rammstein's industrial, alternative, progressive, gothic metal style I freaking love it. Keep up the good work and thanks again.

For me, this song by using the loaded term “Auslander” is highlighting the irony between migrants and refugees entering Europe for enterprising, work and family purposes, yet being marginalised by the (generally white) European public, contrasted against European tourists and expats travelling to foreign/ third world countries for sex tourism and other shallow/ unwholesome pursuits, yet being accepted, welcomed and generally not marginalised. There’s a strong colonial undertone (watch the music video) which is deliberately scrutinised by Rammstein for its hypocrisy. That’s my take-away from this song anyway.

I liked the song on my first listen. Given that I don’t speak German, my first chance to try to interpret the song was from the video. I saw it as being about colonialism, either specifically Germany’s brief colonial period or that of Europe in general, especially given the sort of introspective look at German history in “Deutschland.” Knowing the lyrics now, I think your interpretation is definitely plausible. Interesting either way.

It wasn't that brief. There was a black holocaust that was ignored. An entire new ethnicity created from all the rapes by German soldiers. Bones of the people who suffered in places like namibia still can be found. And there is a significant German presence still there.

Same here, tho I instead of giving me the idea of this song being about colonialism it heavy reinforced this as I already thought of this this first time I heard it. Tho I am a history nerd, it also makes a bit of sense because the historical context of Deutschland and Radio. All these three songs shine light on historical events, time periods and ideals, however they are also very timely right now with immigration, racism, oppression of other ideologies and the political shifts in todays society.

@@tomjongman4797 Oh same, I have a degree in history- so Deutschland was like catnip for me. I just hadn't gotten the "Great White Hunter"/ King Leopold's Ghost vibe that the video had. Like VlogDave, I thought of it more in the modern sex tourism realm or destructively promiscuous individuals who go abroad to chat up non-sex workers. Which hey, is a result of that earlier colonialism, but it just wasn't the image that popped into my head.

@tomjongman4797
@tomjongman4797 5 жыл бұрын
@@misshisokapaints109 Tell me, do you really think that the members of Rammstein are racist because they made a point on the fact that we made a huge mess in those places we unrightfully claimed as ours back in the days of colonialism? Also putting up the victim card won't help, if only it is sad. I personally think that all human beings should be totally free in all ways possible, and because I like a video with visuals of African people(presumably ) wearing tribal outfits and white men wearing clothes from the 1900's we are racist? I think you should take a good look in the mirror and then comeback on who the "real"racist is.

My maiden language is Spanish, I learned English while still in school and decided to learn German as an adult and Rammstein has helped me a lot with my understanding and pronuciation of the German language. Speaking of Ausländer, I absolutely loved it from the first time I listened to it, however, the one track I'm still not sure about is Radio, the one you like quite a lot!

Before I got the album, people were saying Ausländer was going to be the best on the album, Deutschland drop and I was blown away. Then Radio dropped and it was instantly better, since I got the album, I skipped the first 2 tracks to hear Ausländer....meh....not my favourite by any means, still like it better than Diamant but now I find myself repeating Tattoo, Radio, and Was ich liebe, (the latest one being a demo version of an 09 song apparently) I can't speak German really so the sound is what has me sold, same can be said for why I like Rammstein in the first place. Ich bin auch ausländer, Irishman living in Belgium, will be seeing Rammstein in Paris next month. Thanks for making this video, I've subscribed for more. Prost!

Few things awesome about the song 1) Rammstein shot a music video in Cape Town, my home town. 2) It's catchy, thats for sure. 3) I'm a Afrikaans speaker which shares quite a few words with Duits (Afrikaans word for German) 4) AUSLÄNDER in Afrikaans = Uitlander / Buitelander 5) We also get quite a few Germans visiting South Africa, and Cape Town. So hearing the translation is actually quite comedic. 6) We get some Germans to the north aka Namibia (which is quite awesome as it was part of South Africa not long ago) Thanks for translating and discussing the song. Pretty interesting. After I go a chance to hear it for the first time, I was lost in translation with some of the phrases. You cleared that up pretty nicely. Danke en groete van Kaapstad.

It cracked me up the moment I've heard it first time. It oozes with Rammstein's snarky humor. And when I found out they're gonna release third single/video. I was hoping this might be it.

I love this song and I think it's one of the best ones on the album :D I fell in love with it the first time I listened to it... Maybe it's because I like to listen electronic dance music when I'm not listening to Rammstein :) Great video!

This was One of my favourite tracks from the beginning. And the vídeo seems like a critic to the conquistadores. From my point of view. Oh by the way thanks for the translation. I dont speak german but like Rammstein for a longo time. Its all about the music lol

Agreed! Thought the same, specially when he uses french and spanish languages, and at the beginning there was the kid using the sign "welcome", kinda hinted me to that.

Agree...a very funny satire..of course, there are going to be some ill people saying: It is Racist !!...is racist !!!.....for instance, all North American people (whites, blacks, reds, blues, etc), they are very racist and see racism in any stupid thing you can imagine..I have lived there for some years and they are really mentally damaged regarding these issues.

I loved it the first time I heard it. One of my favorite things about music is hearing a normally really heavy band do something totally different. They always do what other people try to do but way better

I liked the song on the first listen and continue to like it as i listen to it more. I appreciate your perspective because well im not German so this was very interesting to hear! I really love your videos so thanks for making them! The music video was also pretty interesting, i liked it a lot. I totally agreed with you on how the song felt in terms of it being very Rammstein but with a dance music feel to it. But i honestly like it. I would of course loved more of the harder industrial music like Tattoo, but im hoping the next album (i hope they make) will maybe have a couple more like that.

It's one of the tracks that stood out the most to me on first listen, and I liked it. Very catchy and the chorus is easy and fun to sing along to. I think it will be a popular song with crowds at their foreign concerts.

In my opinion the song is also about the modern "colonialism" of the super powers. It's not a coincidence that he mentions German, English, Italian, French, Spanish and Russian, as these are languages of the most powerful countries in the world today. Much like the ridicule of the US politics in the track "Amerika", they ridicule here the way these countries try to impose their lifestyle and teaching to foreign cultures. This can be best seen when Til as a missionairy tries to teach the inhabitans about Theology and the christian way of life. This is what I got of the lyrics and the video. P.s. I am a german speaker

Hey Dave, thank you for the translation/interpretation for this and all the others songs you did so far! (just finished binging all your lyrics translation videos :) ) Well, about the last sentence, I don't think he's making fun of people learning German, but he's probably "mimicking" when Germans try to hit on a foreigner person. You don't know their language (and vice-versa), so you start saying basic words with a lot of gestures to try to make yourself understood. The "Tarzan grammar" as I like to call (Yeah, I had this first hand experience with foreigners trying to hit on me, specially Americans and Japanese guys). About the song (and being a foreigner myself right now), I really like it. Besides the sex tourism interpretation, it also shows the idea people still have from foreigners coming to their country (from colonialism time). We grew up having the idea that "foreigners don't want to stay and grow roots with us, they just wanna have fun and go back to their country, leaving everything for us to clean/take care of". That's how people here sees me anyway, and that's what they expect me to do, so let's embrace it and sing that "Ich bin Ausländer" for everybody to hear (kind of like "'cause I am whatever you say I am, if I wasn't then why would I say I am?" mentality that Eminem sings about).

I heard it for the first time in Estonian radio station and I started to like it immediately, I didn't even recognize it was Rammstein as I was too focused on trying understanding the lyrics (I've been learning German in Duolingo for around 10 months now. :] )

When I first heard the song, I was not sure what to think, meaning that Rammstein usually rocks hard. But the repeating of auslander, kind of ingrained it into my brain. Now I love it and look forward to it. The video is poetic in its own way. Like who paddles a raft in the ocean. The clothes worn gives it a "back in the day" feeling. I'd say that it fits, especially at the end with the babies. Lol.
