I really do appreciate your focus on the high end, no compromise equipment, and that's why I watch your channel, but seeing a hidden gem like this featured in one of your videos is a real treat. Your welcome. I do want to make a point that it is good but also relative to price so people don't expect it to compete against a similar integrated amp many times it's price. Hi Thomas, MP-301 MK3 has many tube options. I ordered mine from Musical Paradise website when it had the EF86 tube (with adapter) as an option. For fans of detailed sound, the EF86 is preferred over the 6SJ7. The frequency response is much more extended with the EF86. I prefer the long plate Mullard (over the Dario and Svetlana). You get a mesmerizing open, transparent soundscape. I have also settled on Russian military Foton 6P3S power tubes (over KT66. 6L6, EL34). The Foton 6P3S has incredible tone and speed. Drums are fast and impactful. The sound stage is breadth taking and the imaging leaves little to be desired. I hope you or other users will give it a try.

Hey, Thomas! Just wanted to let you know that I did buy this amp, and have already fallen in love with it! It arrived yesterday, and today I unpacked it and set it up in my system. This amp is everything you said it was in the review: even right out of the box and with the stock tubes, it sounded so holographic and airy ....... and it just kept getting better and better the longer I played it! I was listening to my collection of hi-res digital files, and couldn't stop. I kept wanting to hear just one more, then just one more, and it kept going! After over four hours I finally had to quit to get something to eat. it is definitely very musical and draws me into the music like no other equipment I've had has done. I am definitely going to start saving up to upgrade to more efficient speakers that will be a better match, but while I do, I will be enjoying the best sound I have heard from my system yet!

Audio preference changes time to time, but once I know what's good for me at that time, that's when I would drop money on it. I used this with KEF Q300 & Tekton Lore and the AMP performs great with both. You are right about the bass, where it won't give the slam or go deep like solid state. The Bass is there but unrefined. It perfoms well with Jazz where the up-right bass is detailed and accurate. However, if you switch to Genelax Golden Lion KT88 tubes, you will get solid state bass quality while maintaining warmth. Add 6ns7 preamp tubes and the amp sounds close enough to solid state

This is a very good product. Spend a few hundred dollars and upgrade the caps inside (both the film and electrolytic caps) as well as the tubes and you have an amp that sounds better than $2000-3000 solid state Amps. The Klipsch RP 600 M is not 96 db, at best it’s 90-91 db (Klipsch is simply lying). But even with a 90 db speaker, you can get up to 96-97 db SPL using the 6 tube watts. That’s LOUD!

I have this amp and agree completely with Thomas, except I prefer EL34’s over stock 6L6’s. Tighter bass more instrument separation, sweeter treble(but this is also with RCA 6SJ7 tubes in preamp section.) This is aimed at not entry level audiophile per se, but really more at the very budget oriented audiophile. Will be trying some KT 88’s. Probably won’t bother changing the RCA 6SJ7’s in ore devotion as they sound really good. ....and yeah, pins are tight. I do worry a bit about breaking a tube.

I had this amp before and it’s amazing. Genelax KT88 sound amazing in this amp. Better then EL34s IMO. But KT88 make the amp sound almost like Solid state with a bit of warmth. Bass is tighter, the highs are extended and the midrange is more...antiseptic. But I am a fan of the KT66. It’s a better 6L6...smoother, more revealing, better bass and better imaging. Highs are a little more extended but not by much. I originally bought this in 2013 so I didn’t have the updated version of the MK 3, My wife ordered the 2018 version for me as a Christmas present, so I will see if the updates made a difference. I have an original MP301 which uses 6V6 tubes. 6L6 tubes are better suited for guitar amps sonically. Yes it was low powered at about 3 watts/ch but different brands of tubes could produce more power, Some newer made in 60s 6V6s do about 4 watts. Ancient coke bottle ones closer to 2 watts. The only mod I did besides tube rolling ( I use GEs and even changed the driver tubes to NOS Euopean tubes because the Chinese tubes that came with it are not very good)... is to remove the cathode bypass caps. Gain drops but so does wave form distortion. The amp now puts out clean sine waves up to 3.5 w/ch. Sine waves were badly distorted at even a fraction of a watt before the mod.

I am a little concerned you keep mentioning it has thin bass. I have this amp, and about 40 different tubes to use in it, and lack of bass isn't an issue at all. I feel that using this amp with the cheapest (basically free) tubes is a mistake. This really blooms with higher end tubes. Try SED Winged C EL34 or 6L6GC, KT88/KT77/KT66 gold lion tubes, and for the drivers, get some 6SH7 or 717A doorknobs. Maybe in a second video you can give a quick update on the amp with some better tubes your vintage friend is sure to use. Also would offer to share my experiences tube rolling in this amp with your vintage friend if he is interested. I have spent way more than the actual amp in NOS tubes to try in it.
@ThomasAndStereo
@ThomasAndStereo 5 жыл бұрын
I guess it's relative what thin bass is. Compare to ALL my 30+ amps, yes it is. The only thing is I did not try with KT88 so it might give a fuller bass. Also, keep in mind that this is a budget gear so people buying in the price range expect explosive bass to be considered good. I wanted to make sure there are no surprises. Before I posted the video, I had Garry go over the video to make sure everything I said makes sense. If the creator of the unit is ok with my assessment, then I was confident it was ok.

Your description of the good points of what this amp can do .... holographic soundstage, imaging, instrument separation... are exactly what has always been important for me in audio gear. For various reasons I have had to go without having a proper audio system for quite a few years, and now that I have the opportunity to get back into it, I find myself faced with months of penny-pinching in order to upgrade to the sound I want. I find myself very intrigued by this amp. For the qualities that you mentioned in the review, coupled with the fact that I live in a small apartment where loud volume would be a problem, and the very affordable price, I just may go for this. It is so affordable that trying it out wouldn't be a financial burden. You mentioned maybe trying it with the Elacs. Have you done so, yet? I would be curious to know if it matches well and can drive them effectively.

@ThomasAndStereo 5 жыл бұрын
I never got a chance since my friend took the unit as soon I finished the review. Elac are known to be a bit difficult to drive, I think some are 4 ohm and some 6 ohm. I personally probably would not go for it because I think Elac really shine with power. I myself would go with the other 3 integrated amp that I recently reviewed (sprout100 coming) instead for the Elac specifically.

@@ThomasAndStereo That’s what I expected because of the general thought being that the Elacs need power. I’m not wed to the idea of Elacs, but I AM wed to a holographic soundstage, good imaging, instrument separation, and musical midrange because I have experienced these things in the past and found them to be able to draw me into the music more than other qualities. I don’t need deep bass, but i do need good sounding bass. I do think I will give this amp a try, and if I find it to be a keeper, I will look for a better speaker match. Word on the internet is that the Tekton M-Lore or Zu speakers are good matches.

Hey Thomas. I ordered an MP-301 which should arrive next week. I will be using a pair of Western Electric/Altec 755A 8" full range drivers in sealed cabinets that i'am building. No crossover, just Spotify to Sonos to MP-301 to 755A's. The Altecs are rated at 8 watts, but I read the SPL is only 81db, very inefficient to say the least......so my question: Is there going to be enough power to drive them satisfactory with the MP-301? I wanted an a flea watt amp because the Altecs are extremely rare full range drivers and I would be devastated if they blew. Great vids by the way!!!

4 years is a long time, yet i don't think that Guangyo ("Gary") has come out with any new or replacement version. I'm a big fan; I bought one when it came out, to add to my two(!) Mk.I's & another amp branded "HiFi" that made their own point-to-point wired version of the Mk.II (which had an issue with burning out the power transformer, a VERY common problem with PRC-designed/built Valve amps, unfortunately). I also own an MP-728(?), a short-lived model that cost about double what this one did & used either your choice of 300B or 2A3; chosen with the flick of a top-panel switch! You would think that a FAR more substantially built (≈35lbs./15-20kg) 300B amp would sound ALOT better than the same guy's much cheaper 6L6 amp, but you would be wrong!🫤 Guangyo uses FANTASTIC parts quality, the build quality is SUPERB, & except for the Mk.II, durability is top notch; everything about the 301 & 728 are every bit as well made as anything by Prima Luna (who have durability problems with their paint finish when exposed to the extreme humidity changes during Canadian winters & summers!😳). But there is trouble in paradise, pun intended... For one, the Mk.I started off with a choice of 6V6 being the "base" valve, with a 4W/ch rating. Or, you could "upgrade" to the 6L6, with the power rating magically ✨🌈 🦄 jumping to 6W. The input valves back were the 6J1, a.k.a. EF94, 6AK5, 5654, or Mullard M8100 (best). The 6J1 is functionally identical to the 6SJ7 in this circuit, & other than its "dinky" appearance because it's a tiny little 7-pin thing (& used in all sorts of other riseable junk hybrid phono preamps & headphone amps from the PRC that costs well under $100🤮), it's actually a MUCH better choice than the 6J8 (6SJ7). Because instead of about 5 possible substitutions for valve-rolling you have MORE THAN TWENTY!😳🤯 Further, other than those 🚒 red RCA 5693 10,000hr. rated NOS premium valves that you so sexily rolled in our faces during the video, which are AN ABSOLUTE MUST because they sound about 10x less dirty, distorted, & opaque than ANY 6SJ7 EVER made (because yep! I've just about tried 'em all! And NO exaggeration 🧐🥱😴!), ALL the other substitutions sound even worse still! OTOH, even a generic American or West European NOS EF94/6AK5 sounds better than ANY 6SJ7, with the NOS American 5654's pretty much matching the performance of the FAR more expensive 5693's. Then there's the Mullard M8100; also much cheaper & easier to find than a RCA "Special Red" 5693, also every bit as good sounding! And for even less money than the M8100 (which are still probably $10ea. or less on eBay🤗🧐), there's NOS pentodes like the 9001, 6BZ6, 6BD6, & 6BA6 which in these amps actually sound alot better yet again!🤗🤗🤗 So there's a BIG part of the problem: Pentodes. Guangyo's circuit hasn't evolved a single bit in over 10 years, & the use of lousy-sounding pentodes in the input stage REALLY holds the sound potential of an otherwise superb little S.E. Valve Amplifier back. So much so, in fact, that they RUINED the sound of the 2A3 or 300B-equipped MP-728. I could understand putting 6J1's & 6J8's into a super-inexpensive entry-level SE amplifier; but using the same 💩 all through the model range?🧐 Over & over again, as the prices & power output go up & up & time marches on??? 🤦 I have a friend who's also an Electronics Technician like myself, who had the bad fortune to service a broken MP-501. I was frankly rather shocked at his critique of it, since he likes & admires the MP-301 as much as I do! He said that the amp was a flying 💩 show, terribly designed AND awful sounding as well! So it would seem that unfortunately for Guangyo (Gary), the magic 🪄🤧✨ just doesn't necessarily "scale up" as you would hope it should.🤒 Speaking of things that don't scale up, I also notice that the output transformers from the 4 watt rated 6V6-powered Mk.1 amp uses the IDENTICAL output transformers as the now "6½ Watt" 6L6/EL34-equipped Mk.3.🤨🤥🤥🤥🤪 I can't say that the bass was tighter in the Mk.1 with the 6V6's due to less O/P transformer saturation, because the nature of the very pretty sounding 6V6 valve (which is only about 6000 light years prettier than the ECCCCHY-sounding 🙉💩🙉6L6🙉💩🙉, btw!🤮🤮🤮🤧) is that it has a somewhat mushy bass & relatively compressed dynamics compared to higher powered output pentodes. That, & the power transformer is usefully & substantially larger in the Mk.II/III versions than it was in the Mk.1... I never had a nanosecond of doubt as to my sonic preference for ANY EL34 or 6CA7 over ANY brand or version of the 6L6 (of which I own hundreds of metal 6L6's & 1614's, 6L6G, 6L6GA, 6L6GB, 6L6GC, BRITISH Genalex KT-66, & JAN6L6/5881's!🧐🤪🤯)! The EL34/6CA7 is VASTLY more refined, having none of the OBVIOUS & OBNOXIOUS blare & glassy GLARE of the 6L6's(at least to me...🙄🤦), with a MUCH larger soundstage, VASTLY greater depth (because it's VASTLY more detailed!), & far more realistic timbres, dynamic scaling, nuance, treble refinement, & subjective bass extension. Other than that, I suppose that the 6L6 sounds like it should be your preference... In the interim, a more competitive PRC designed & built SEP amplifier from FX Audio has come onto the market: the FX Audio TUBE-P1. About half the power (2W/ch.), & about half the price, too! The circuit is pretty much IDENTICAL, as is the high quality of parts, except for the use of a 9-pin 6P1 output valve (similar in sound & performance to a 6V6, & that cost under $5 each! Even for new copies of the better sounding RuZzian 6P1P version!), & the better choice 6J1 back in the front seat as the input stage valve, allowing for the 20+ cheaper & better-sounding alternatives to the 6J8's now used by Musical Paradise.🤗 AND it has a built-in MM phono stage!🤯 I now own a couple of these TUBE-P1 amps, & they've worked for a few hundred hours each so far, absolutely faultlessly & with much of the time spent using the supplied Chinese valves. Do I regret buying my MP-301's in hindsight? No. Do I prefer the sound of the TUBE-P1 to the MP-301 Mk.3? No, at least not when 5693's are in the MP-301; & besides, I made up a pair of 7-pin socket to 8-pin "Octal" plug adapters so that I can use the 6J1 choices in the MP-301 equally easily. Is the MP-301 still worth double the price of the TUBE-P1? Well, time marches on & Musical Paradise's competition hasn't sat still, even though it appears that Guangyo has. I play vinyl, but the MM stage in the FX-Audio is little better than the built-in phono stages found in the current crop of sub-$1000 turntables, & it lacks enough gain to drive the amplifier to full output!🤪🤤🤤🤤 Otherwise the feature set is virtually identical. The TUBE-P1 also wins the "cuteness" battle, being substantially smaller & lighter, AND it runs noticeably cooler... since it uses a computer -type external PSU that you can locate remotely. Which gets quite warm, not hot! But don't bury it under your desk out of sight & forget about the potential safety hazard in doing so!😬 You hardly notice that the P1 only has ⅓rd the RATED power, & despite the much smaller output transformers, the bass is equally tight on both units, & sound quality is not only equal, but the sonic signature is pretty much IDENTICAL! Go figure, with the exact same circuit & parts quality! But you notice that the lowest bass notes roll off somewhat earlier on the P1 than they do on the 301; but with so little power, this sounds well-judged & you don't miss much. Otherwise, who do you want to give your money to in these times? Do you want to own an amp where you have to send money to RuZzia to get the best possible output valves (as ridiculously cheap as they are🤣🤣🤣)? Would you rather that the (VERY little!🤣🤣🤣) profits made from your amplifier are shared between a Canadian-owned company & a Chinese manufacturer who sell direct to the customer? Or that the profits go to a Chinese company & manufacturer who sells both direct & through Canadian & American distributors & retailers? Hardly decisions that are going to lose the war for democracy in Ukraine or prevent the invasion of Taiwan by a 👹fascist 👹criminal 👹government in Beijing, but food for a very small amount of thought, regardless...😐 In the meantime, I give my friend Guangyo my highest regards, and some helpful advice: Go stick a couple of triodes in it, will ya?🎶🌈🤗

i know this is a old video but i feel that there are quite a few younger folks like me that have endgame dac and cables for a headphone setup and is transitionationing over to semi nearfield(1.5 to 2m away) listening in a small room for group enjoyment/movie night which is why im looking into it. That being said I know its a side grade to the nad 316bee but i want a good tube amp to pair with the BR03 so that i have better range of control besides the first 10% of the knob and still get the same effect of having imaging from behind me without having to run them through a tube buffer. Who knows maybe im asking for too much since my backend has been diled in to how i like my sound which is enegatic revealing honest yet forgiving(sharp tranient peaks with a soft top if that makes sense) and it only partially translates over to the speakers. Also i have a bias towards KT88 sound and this package allows me to just drop it in and enjoy all my brickwalled yet well mastered electronic music. Or maybe im just copping because this is the cheapest package that ticks all my biases of thin mid centric high voltage swings that still grips the drivers well enough to produce that tickling in your chest and throat that makes you want to sing along.

You can't compare because the Freya is a preamp while this is an integrated amp. If you go the Freya route + a solid state amp, it is higher level but not necessary as neutral than this. If you are thinking to go into tubes, and if you have the cash, then go for the Freya direction as that will scale more.

@ThomasAndStereo 4 жыл бұрын
For sure it will affect us when we know the gear cost a lot. Can we reliably past the blind test? It depends on what we are comparing. This is a 6w amp, if we compare it to a 300w amp driving a very difficult speaker, then anyone will past a blind test. If we were to compare to another 6w amp that is 10x the price ASSUMING it is using the same tubes, will we still able to tell a difference? For some, the only way to know for certain is to double-blind test it. In real life, we will rarely get a chance to do tests like these but I have met many audiophiles that to them, there is no need because the difference is so obvious. This is a pointless debate until one can get into a room and listen.

More Thomas looking at more tube gear! :D Thanks for introducing me to this amp. Looks like a fun toy to just get to know the sound differences with all those compatible tubes. Is that ModWright LS 100 going to be reviewed? I'm looking for a pre and I'm stuck between this ModWright and a Luxman C uSE.

The LS100? It's great tube preamp but I kind of stop talking about my own gear when it's a bit expensive so maybe in the future. It does have a bit floor noise but it could be the tubes I use.

Thank you for your entertaining and informative reviews. After watching your review on the MP301 MK3, I ordered one and your right it sounds nice after rolling some kt88 ad el34’s in there. Can you please share or recommend what pre-amp tubes to roll in there? Im not familiar with any that are listed on MP website as acceptable. In fact, havent found any if them either. Any advice on that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Nice, yes tube rolling will make all the difference with tube amps. I don't have it anymore so I don't know about the preamp tubes, sorry.

Many power cords and interconnects are woeful at reproducing the extremes of both hi-frequencies and/or bass. Be interesting to report back on

I actually touched on that topic in this video regarding power cables, but I deleted it because cables just invite heated discussions. In short, the cheaper power cord actually was better than the expensive power cord.

Most power cords and interconnects are very adequate. Gene at Audioholics will set you straight, especially about overpriced Audioquest.

I friend of mine in Canada bought one of their amps, it had a hum from the first day. It was difficult to get rid of. It sounds like they have a design flaw, or just make noisy transformers.

I would say the best thing to do is reach out to Musical Paradise and ask for help. Maybe he got a bad unit and just need to be replaced. I have tried 1 amp and 1 dac from them and there is no hum in my system. If there is a hum, I am sure they will get tons of complain.

Good morning Thomas, I live in Toronto and I love your channel so brilliant no BS hahah, If you have a moment I am a very small player in what I can afford, I have a Nuprime ID8 and Kef R100, I am looking at getting the MP 301 mk3 and Klipsch RP600m after your reviews, will these work/play together. Keep up the amazing reviews mr T
@ThomasAndStereo
@ThomasAndStereo 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, the issue as I mentioned in the video is the RP600M actually measures around 89db. At that sensitivity, you will need a bit more watt. That is I mentioned it sounds a bit think with the MP301 with the RP600M.

Hey Thomas I spoke to at the Toronto Audio fest on Saturday and asked about the amp and RP600? Please let me know your choice between the Yaqin MC 13c or the MP 401? Which would you buy? Thank you so much Thomas great to meet you.

@@rosspulsford9916 Hi Ross, great to chat with you. So I asked my vintage friend because he spent a lot of time with the Yaqin and MP. Here is his response. "The Yaqin is very much like your MC10 except there is a remote control. So you Are familiar with that romantic tuby sound. Is that what he is looking for? The MP's sound, although I have not heard the MP401, if I were to guess based on the MP301, is more modern and you can run different tubes for fun. If they are the same price, taking the MP is a definite move. Also , with the MP401 mk3, he can use 6L6, EL34, KT88, KT120...like he paid one price and buy 4 amps!

@@ThomasAndStereo Hey Thomas thank you so much for your time, I spent 2 hours with Jay yesterday at Audio Excellence, I am after a tube amp that is not audiophile, thin and brittle sounding, I am into being there at the event, the sound to be 3D holographic lush romantic thicker not BRIGHT at all? thank you for reaching out to your vintage friend that is so awesome.

I never tried but can tell you don't bother. RB42 is all about fun bass, as such, I would give it the most power I can afford. This amp is for refinement and the RB42 is not refined enough for this amp.

@ThomasAndStereo

@@cristobalreymusic I am not sure this is a good combo for someone who is just starting. The reason I say this is because Sony is a bit 'flat' and pairing with a neutral amp might be too neutral. Now many advance audiophiles who value neutrality would like it but I personally like a bit of firework in my system. In the budget speaker, my personal favorite is the Elac debut 6.2 but that is a difficult speaker to drive relatively speaking. Regardless, it's just my guess, we don't know until we plug it in. Let me know how the Sony and the MP301 pair. I expect not much bass but I can be wrong.

@@ThomasAndStereo i definitely will keep you updated...i am a musician (www.aquafabamusic.com) and very picky about sound...i am not a tech guy but def i can hear. I am excited about the highs coming from the Sony...and i am thinking about the option of getting a subwoofer to balance the lack of bass...we will see, it is also hard not to get influenced by the massive review of the Sonys. Garry Huang recommended PSB Alpha B1 and Klipch rp-500M, r-51M or Q Acoustics speakers, as the best budget match for the MP301...but as i do not have the option to test them all i have to follow reviews and make my decisions on that base, and those recommended by Garry were poorly reviewed. Garry also told me that if i get Subwoofer it must be one with "high speaker level inputs"...i am not sure which ones are those...but i think that i could get amazing high tones with the sonys and then balance with a small subwoofer to complete the mini combo.. ( i thought the same about the Micca RB42 that i like the size and aesthetic more).it would be nice to have some comment of you about it...also about acoustic panels that is my homework for the summer...at the and i need a small system for a 30m2 room.
@ThomasAndStereo
@ThomasAndStereo 5 жыл бұрын
Acoustic panels will help big time and you will get more focus imaging. Most sub these days don't have high speaker level input, make sure you research that if you want to add one to your setup.
