I found this Vintage Scale at flea market, it cost me 10€ , a very good price i think , the woman who sold me this beautiful scale explained to me that her parents bought in 1920 to sell food to the market every day until they died...
This is a very durable scale and after this restoration will survive for another 100 years.
I don't know if you seen my other scale restoration, if not pleas watch and tell me what you think and which restoration do you prefer, so i decided with this restoration to not make any paint because many of you requested this, for protection of the metal i have utilized a special produc an inhibator for rust , this produc is a thick oil which become very hard after 24 hours and don't let air and water touch the metal;
I replaced all the screws because they were very rusty.
Index of operation and materials:
( 01 : 14 ) disassembly
( 05 : 13 ) remooving rust with electrolisys
( 05 : 56 ) cleaning the plates
( 06 : 39 ) buffing the plates
( 08 : 36 ) polishing the plates
( 08 : 13 ) brushing the rust after electrolisys
( 09:58 ) buffing all the metal parts
( 11 : 09 ) fixing all the screws
( 12 : 05 ) cleaning all the parts with whitespirit
( 12 : 25 ) appling the Rustol owatrol antirust incolore
( 13 : 56 ) start asesembli the parts
If you like this restoration please share and subscribe

The restoration looks great. Might I suggest for the next restoration, instead of taking a steel hammer and steel anvil, try an oak block and a hard rubber mallet or nylon/plastic hammer to the thin brass pieces. Hammering brass between steel thins and stretches the brass where a wood block and the hard rubber, plastic or nylon hammers won't.

Craftsmen, blacksmiths bend, stretch and mold even harder metals using wood blocks and wooden-, brass- and steelhammers. When metal bends it stretches, hardens and gets thinner. Trick is to know what you're doing (: I'm not here to attack your comment, just saying my own opinion on this matter.

So glad you didn't use any paint. This would have taken away all it's originality and patina. Some things are better _not_ fully restored with new paint, fasteners and looking like it's just out of the factory. However, this is what I call a 'sympathetic' restoration. The rust inhibitor is wonderful stuff. A suggestion for complementing old metals is the use of brass roundhead slot screws (not phillips). A lot of old fasteners back in the day were brass, and for these scales, they would compliment the brass weighing pans. Regards. Dawg.

Yes-Yes-Yes.... You kept all the original character possible and still made the piece functionally perfect. You even replaced the ruined bolts with period correct straight slotted bolts. The original tool maker of a 100 years ago would be proud of you.

@ Linda Chapman More precisely these screws LOOK like period correct ones BUT they actually are NOT because... The standard pitch of european screws (specially small ones) had evolved in mid 50's. This is just to give you some precisions, I agree, this is BTW a beautiful job.

Remove the oil and paint from all piviots and brearing. To much friction, dry works better and that is how it was intended. Sharpen the piviots. With a 1000 grit stone not files, power tools or sand paper. If the scale was serviced at the scale company I work for thats where I would start. Ideally their is 5 to 7 direction changes before the scale gives you a reading. All that said nice job on making an antique look very love. Love the look you choose to use. Hope my recommendation helps.

just to add a suggestion.. when you do another restoration of scales like such, try keeping a record of which came from the left part and came from the right, which sides a certain part was facing, etc. and put it back as such.. no offense meant but, the scale was probably working "accurately" during its time.. and yes, as someone said in the comment, the sanding, buffing and even the materials that rust ate away played a huge factor for it ending up unbalanced.. good job with the lead though..

Salut.

Seeing this video makes me both happy and sad My grandfather used to have a balance too, he passed away 10 years ago and because of rust my father chose to throw it away (I think? I was 8 or 9, so I don't remember. But I never saw that balance again). Seeing this video somehow manages to make me feel like I still am in my grandpa's living room, trying to figure out the weight of every object I could find. Thank you for renovating this object, seeing this truly made me nostalgic. You have done an incredible job.

Better check your numbers. He states +-5g, he only has 2.6kg of test weights, which by the way are not checked, that makes his accuracy worse than 1 part in 260. That's pretty pathetic, a cheapo 10 year old bathroom scale that has never been calibrated wins that accuracy contest any day as long as it has a 3 digit readout display. Pretty much the only scale less accurate than this would be a mechanical bathroom scale.

Про припаивание дополнительных граммов на одной стороне я вообще молчу. Мне гораздо больше нравится канал my mechanics. Там швейцарец твои чудеса. А этому парню желаю успехов, надеюсь он будет делать в будущем качественнее.

This video is very old and I’m quite aware but try using something else for lubricant. WD-40 is great and all but for the most part it gets rid of moisture inside what you spray it into. Things like TriFlow are MUCH better at lubricating things.

I used a balance like that, different model, with my first job at the University of Minnesota in 2001. We saved money by using antiquated equipment like this iin order to afford expensive chemicals. It works well enough but only if you have the patients and intelligence to operate it instead of reading the results from a computer monitor. It also means that you can keep working when the power goes out. I also knew how to use a slide rule.

I have a very similar scale, in addition beautiful weights from polished brass. This scale has no rust and even works. But I don't use it because it is so impractical. In the kitchen I have an electric scale with tare function, accurate to the gram. This plastic-scale costs 20 Euros and there will be no one to restore it in fifty years. Nobody will ever repair it. If it is broken, it will end up in the garbage, along with a thousand other electric scales. If I were a scale, I would remain mechanical. But I have no choice. I am already electrified.

Good job balancing the arm. But you did some grinding on the reference weights. They either need to be calibrated or replaced to go back into service. But I would put it on display. You should try to find a hand powered centrifuge. That would be cool.
