One of my favourite Finnish words is the word Keskusta, mainly because of a running gag we had with friends, saying that Kiitos keskusta ment You're welcome :) My favourite Finnish word however, must be pipo, for a very specific reason. In Dutch, there is an old tv-show for kids, about a clown named Pipo. Eversince, the word pipo is used as a synonym for "dummy". At the same time, the Dutch word for beanie is used for dummy as well! From that moment on, pipo means dummy in two ways for me, something that really made me laugh!
@VeryFinnishProblems4 жыл бұрын
Lol! What a brilliant coincidence :) Pipo really does sound like a comic characters name. Have you got a link to a pic of your Dutch clown anywhere?
1. Alakulo (melancholy including some joy within) - sounds so beautiful. 2. Puro (creek) 3. Lempi (an old word for love, it's less powerful, mild & loving) 4. Perhonen 🦋 5. Kuurankukka (the 🌸 frost creates on windows in winter)

I am a big fan of the dog breed the Broholmer (AKA Danish Mastiff) which are mostly bred in Denmark but also gaining popularity in Finland (they're not bred at all in the UK, more's the pity). Duolingo convert here! Been doing the Finnish course daily since a couple of weeks after it started. Why? I'd received a biographical book bought online on an international-known Finnish music star and had my 'English exceptionalism' caved in when I opened it and realised it was in Finnish! Not having a whole lot else to do, I decided there and then to learn Finnish. Am hoping to read the book in about 10 years - can't wait! XD Anyway, I just wanted to query the pronunciation of "lämpimämpi". I always thought "ä" was like the "a" in "cat", but you sound like you're saying "lumpimumpi". Is this a regional variation where you're based? Oh, and my favourite word so far is "kysymys" ... and I also like the sound of the phrase "olemme pahoillamme".
@VeryFinnishProblems3 жыл бұрын
What a great story! Good luck on your mission. 10 years sounds about right :) Don't listen to my pronunciation. My kids regularly highlight how bad it is, just like in the video :)

@VeryFinnishProblems4 жыл бұрын
You learn something new every day! Congrats on Golden Owl. How have you liked Duolingo?
@Andreas-gh6is4 жыл бұрын
@@VeryFinnishProblems I have learned or am learning eight languages on duolingo. I think it is usually the best at what it does, though it doesn't do everything. The Finnish course certainly lacks in depth, but I would say the quality is high and it is enjoyable. I am looking forward two the revised or expanded tree, but I don't know when it will be available....
@sairhug2 жыл бұрын
I got to the Level 5 Golden Owl (it took a year and 3 days - I was ridiculously ecstatic - LOL!! Nearly a year on and I am still slogging away at gaining the Experience Points to complete the full 25 which reflect 30,000 XP ... am still on 24). Sadly, as you've probably found, it's now all been re-jigged, so the entire Finnish course encapsulates only 2 Levels . It's the same amount of Skills as before but they've standardised the way that Levels reflect the amount of skills involved (and they never explain any of this ... you have to find out for yourself!). I've noticed that the larger, more established courses, such as Italian, go up to Level 4 ... so, in comparison, the course content for Finnish only takes you to the very lowest foothills of the language. There are some glaring omissions ... you can't even express simple things normally included in the very earliest stages of basic language-learning such as to like something. You are, additionally, completely mired in the present tense ... well, that and the partitive tense; the big spanner in the Finnish works! There are also no user-involved speaking exercises for pronunciation (i.e. when you parrot back a sentence and if your soundwaves match theirs you get it right) or "Stories" to be had, which only the most popular languages have - it's very basic. I really wish they would expand the Finnish course, but ever since Duolingo was sold the free content has most definitely been put on the back-burner so I can't see it ever happening, now. Money is the main focus - e.g. you are always being nudged to sign up for Duolingo Plus - a big change from Duolingo's original stated vision :( Oh, and the Golden Owl for completing the course has changed to a blue glass goblet which wobbles annoyingly. It kind of reflects the bad changes with Duolingo lately ... most especially that the sentence discussion boards are now locked, so no more contributions can be made nor help given by users / Moderators. I've now spread onto two other languages (Danish and Italian) and I've discovered neither have as high a standard of help & expertise - particularly where the volunteer Moderators are concerned - as the Finnish course's discussion boards. I've heard rumours that even the visual access to the locked boards will eventually go ... which is probably when I'll give Duolingo up because when you're unsure about something what's the point if there's no way to read interactions and get a deeper knowledge? Does anyone reading this maybe have any recommendations for other language-learning platforms which offer Finnish?
