With 43 thousand miles on my Vespa GTS scooter I thought it was time for a long term review. I'll share my thoughts on performance, reliability, modifications, and the range of riding capability inherent in the Vespa. What I have to share would generally apply to all GTS 250 and 300 scooters up until the latest HPE versions.

Nice video. I have a 2006 Vespa GT200. I believe 2006 or 2007 was the last year they made the carbureted GT200 before they came out with the EFI GTS250. I bought it in 2010, with 1800 miles on it. It was still in new condition, and ran like new. But I believe those miles were all put on it early in it's life, and it sat for more than three years in a the garage. Right away I had 2 failures. The first was the vacuum operated petcock, which stranded me. I had to have it towed home. Just a couple months later the water pump started leaking, but I was able to get home with that, and replaced it. It now has just over 37,000 miles on it, and nothing else has gone wrong. I am 63, and became disabled back in 2011, so I have not worked in 11 years. I was having problems a few years before leaving work. I worked 34 years as an auto/truck/heavy equipment mechanic, so I do all the work on my own bikes. Been riding since age 8 on a 100cc dirt bike, owned over 50 bikes, and have ridden over a million miles. I currently have 4 bikes including the 2006 Vespa. One of them is another Vespa, a 1979 P200E 2 stroke manual shift. I love riding it but is beats me up pretty bad. I also have a 1997 Kawasaki Vulcan 750 that I've put 129,000 miles on, and a 2006 Harley Sportster 1200 that I've had about 5 years and put around 5,000 miles on. Like the 2 stroke Vespa it is a blast to ride, but in my condition I can't go very far on it, it just beats me up. I had a Yamaha XT225 dual sport, but had to give that up. I was no longer able to get on it. Seat was too tall. It was the same as the Vespa GT200, but not a stepthrough, so I couldn't get my leg over the seat. I miss off road riding. My Vespa came with a color matched top box, windshield, and battery maintainer. The windshield was too tall for me, I couldn't see over it, so I gave it away to someone on a scooter forum. They had replaced the GT200 seat with a GT250 seat, and the plastic rear rack would no longer fit, so I couldn't install the top box. I was able to find a chrome rack online that fit both the scooter and top box, and get that installed. I also installed an adjustable windshield and clamp on front rack that looks a lot like yours, both made by FACO, which I got from Scooterwest in San Diego. It flips up when not in use. I ran into problems with both. You can't put hardly anything on the rack without it blocking the headlight. I rigged a way to hang a large roll bag below it. The windshield cause extreme helmet buffeting unless it was adjusted all the way down, where it really doesn't do anything but provide a place to put stickers. I have never ridden mine in snow and ice. I live in AZ, and have only ridden it in the southwest. I have ridden it in CO, NM, TX, CA, UT, NV, OR, and WA. My biggest complaint is how fast rear tires wear out. I weigh 240 (back in 2010 I weighed right around 200, but not being able to get much exercise has taken it's toll) I have tried different tires, but have never had a rear tire last much past 6000 miles. Mine has valve adjustment and belt replacement intervals of 12,000 miles. Since I wind up having to replace the rear tire around that mileage, I go ahead and disconnect the rear shocks while I have the rear wheel off, and that lets the engine and CVT case drop down far enough to be able to reach the cam cover from under the seat to get to the valves. I have never found them very far off, but if they are not perfect, I go ahead and adjust them to the loose end of spec. I notice they tend to tighten as they wear. Being a car and motorcycle guy and having been a mechanic for 34 years, I am big on maintenance. I have always over maintained my vehicles. The best top speed I've ever achieved on the highway with GPS has been 72 mph. In AZ, the speed limit is 75, but almost everybody does 85-90. I stay in the right lane, and usually come up behind a truck doing 65 or so, and just fall in behind them. But I have been rear ended twice in a car doing the speed limit in the right lane, so you really have to be careful. I was seriously considering getting a brand new GTS300, but 3-4 years ago they replaced it with the GTS300 HPE model, which looks the same, but Vespa cut the maintenance intervals in half. Instead of 12,000 miles it is now 6,000 miles, and that includes checking the valves and replacing the belt. There is a lot of work and parts involved. And it is getting harder and harder for me to get down on the floor to work on stuff. It's a $500 job at a dealer, and it would cost me $1000 a year, considering how many miles I ride. I also have to wonder about the reliability. Vespa must have reliability concerns with this new engine because they doubled the amount of maintenance required. To all Vespa riders I highly recommend Robot's videos at kzbin.info Ride safe.

Thank you for your extensive and instructive comments. It will take some time for me to fully absorb the thoughts and experience you have shared here. I smiled when I read of the headlight blocking with the front rack. Mine is a Vespa rack from Piaggio but it has the same problem. On a camping trip with tent and sleeping back fastened on the front rack the headlight was pretty much invisible. All my riding was done in the daylight but the design seemed incorrect. There's a lesson for me in your "over maintenance." I'm at the other end of the scale and could use some movement in your direction. And like you, as I get older, the idea of crawling around on the concrete in the garage sounds pretty much like torture. I bought a rolling shop stool. That has helped. And Robot's videos are fantastic. I often seek his help. Thanks again for taking the time to share so much information. I hope others take the time to read it and afford themselves of your experience!

When I got my motorcycle license several years ago at the ripe old age of 50ish, I was definitely set to get a traditional motorcycle. I came across your blog, and it really got me thinking. I've always preferred the scenic route, and even here in the DC suburbs there are at least a few... Ended up getting a GTS 250 used and ran it for a few years until the engine failed catastrophically (not my fault, there was plenty of oil in it!). Replaced it with a new 2016 300 GTS, and I still smile every time I get on. They're not for everyone, and I've endured some friendly teasing from the guys at work with "real" motorcycles, but I just can't see myself on anything else. I commute most everyday that isn't raining or too far below 40 on it, and it never gets old. So thank you for the introduction to these wonderful machines! Your writing and videos really took me in a direction I didn't expect, and for that I am grateful.

I've had a first gen 300 for a year and put 1,000 miles on it. I moved up to a 1400 v twin motorcycle and I still ride the vespa cause it's so low matenance and easy to park. Scooters are highly underrated. Thanks for your video!

They are absolutely underrated. It's a strange leap from a big motorcycle to a scooter. I mean that in terms of the physical sensation. I once spent an entire day riding a BMW K1600GTL and then jumped on my Vespa. It felt like I was getting into a clown car it felt so small in comparison. But man, I so often appreciate the ease of operation on my Vespa.

Great video. I am also a scooter rider in PA and have been thinking about adding 300GTS to my stable. It is nice to hear a review from someone who has spent some real time on the bike. I have a couple of bikes, but my favorite is my Helix. It is so unusual and starts a lot of conversations. I think when you are on a scooter you are more approachable. When your video first started, one of my first thoughts was that it looked like you were in the NE of the US. After watching the entire video, I am thinking that you are near State College. Central PA is a great place to ride. I live near Bloomsburg, but venture west every chance I get. In one of Neil Peart's books, he mentions that north central PA is a great place to ride and I wholehearted agree.

The Vespa GTS is a unique experience. I've ridden other scooters -- Hondas and Yamahas -- and the Vespa is entirely different in its feel while riding and the responsiveness to the throttle. The others aren't bad, just different. Yes, I live near State College with easy access to a lot of great rural riding in every direction. I've ridden to Bloomsburg a few times including a ride to the big BMW Rally there. And a favorite ride is to Shamokin for food at the Coney Island Lunch. And north central Pennsylvania is just downright magical. I'll keep my eye open for a Helix on the road!

I bought a 2020 GTS Supersport new in 2021 from a dealer in Plano, Texas (Dallas area). I have seen all kinds of Vespa reviews on KZbin, but this is by far the best I've seen. Your editing is first rate, the scenery is beautiful even in winter; I have also seen Pennsylvania in the late Spring and early Summer in person and it's better still, and thank you the commentary. You provided so much great information that I did not know and needed to know. It was 20 minutes well spent. Thank you so much. P. S. I would also like to get a Top Case for my scooter. If you could, I would appreciate a reply with the name of the manufacturer of your 'trunk'. Thanks again, and enjoy the road.

Hi STEVE just came across your channel when searching for information about the GTS as a potential next purchase. I’ve been riding scooters and motorcycles for many many years and each have their strengths. I belong to a scooter club here in the UK and have enjoyed some great rides with these guys. My other bikes include a RE Himalayan purchased in the last couple of months and an old air cooled boxer twin that I’ve owned for the past 25 years.

It sounds as if we're running down some of the same riding roads. I've had my scooters for 15 years and the Himalayan for a couple months. But no boxer twin. I had a K75 until a week ago. It's gone now and I don't see another BMW in my future. I can imagine an RE Meteor 350 though...

I too own a Vespa - in part because of your commentary and photography. So thank you for not only this episode but also the many words and experiences you’ve shared over the years. As I expand my range to points beyond Montgomery County Maryland (just south of you), I hope perhaps one day to find you on a Central Pennsylvania road to say hi in person. First, thank you for your kind words about the things I share. I do appreciate knowing I'm not talking to an empty room. And I also appreciate you introducing the topic of age. I've been scratching my head for some time now on how I can share that "uncomfortable" topic. I've watched the changes in my life due to aging and how they affect my riding life and just have to think I'm not the only one thinking about this stuff. While I don't want to turn Scooter in the Sticks into a geriatric, old geezer hang out, I think it's important, to be honest about not just riding, risk, and modifications, but also about the human experience while riding. Let me know if you end up venturing this way. There are many places to cross paths!

At the age of 62 I'm finally heading over to see your wonderful country. The U.S. has a wide, diverse landscape. While Denver itself may be a bit of an urban nightmare it will change dramatically as you climb into the Rocky Mountains. And Utah is just magical especially around Moab. If you have time visit Deadhorse Point State Park. It's just outside of Moab. You can stand at the edge of a canyon and look out over the Colorado River. It's an amazing place. Have a great trip!

Lovely, Steve! This is the vid I wish was there long time ago when I was shopping for one, inspired by you. I think it will help a lot of people so inclined. I am also very happy it has worked for you for such a long time. Unfortunately, it turned out not to be my cup of "hot tea" and it's been gone for a while. I even made a littlebit of money on it! It was nice enough mechanically, surprisingly fast and ofcourse I (still) love the design, but this category just does not jive with me. I prefer my scooters smaller/lighter and cheaper, think japanese 125-200cc (yes, esthetics are then a 'compromise'). And I prefer my motorcycles slightly faster (than a Himalayan ;) sorry for the jab), think modern 500cc. But the years with you have been a really nice (and scenic - think all the photos!) ride, you helped me some to grow in my motorcycle life. And these vids are so relaxing. Thanks!

It's nice we all have so many choices and options for something to ride. It's possible to find something that ideally suits our needs. My daughter has a Yamaha Vino 125 and it is the perfect scooter for her. For me, riding is about relaxing and enjoying the scenery and not so much about pushing the riding envelope in any given situation. Nothing wrong with that, but it's just not my interest. I was out today on the Himalayan. Just riding, stopped for some food, took some pictures, and now am home, relaxed, and happy. That's what riding is all about for me.

Hi Steve, such a good, accurate review of the GTS, your videos are very well done, helpful and authentic. I sold my Goldwing in 2012 and later in 2013 was missing riding… I bought a 2009 GTS250, same color as yours. I had fleeting thoughts of scooter ownership a time or two but one fateful day buying sandpaper at at paint store I caught a glimpse of a Vespa dealership next door and owned the new Vespa a couple hours later. It’s a 2009 model that sat new at a closed dealership until it was transferred to the one where I bought it in 2013. I have ridden the scooter all over Southern and central California, been camping as well with it. Many miles of California freeway driving as well as Baja Mexico adventures. The GST 250 is the best investment on wheels I’ve ever made. It’s an absolutely amazing machine and takes whatever I throw at it. We ride two up often and on the freeway, the scooter keeps up well. We do our shopping as well, it’s the best for running errands. My average MPG is about 63 and 65 MPG is common. I, as well, had to replace the voltage regulator. That component is reported to be flawed and a common replacement item but the newer ones are manufactured better I’m told. I definitely need to get a front rack and I especially like the floorboard rack that you have. Heated hand grips would be nice, my hands are getting pretty cold these days. My two auxiliary ports are taken up with a USB charger and emergency flasher module system but I’ll have to see if there’s an alternate way to connect heated grips…I really need them for the cold morning rides. Anyway, great channel, thanks!

Thank you for your kind words about the review. Your adventures on your Vespa GTS250 are extensive. And as you say, the GTS can take almost anything you throw at it. It is a fine machine. The heated grips are nice when the temperature is above 40F, but below that I really am glad I finally put the Tucano Urbano muffs on the scooter. They take some getting used to and feel absolutely cumbersome and annoying at first, but eventually they become transparent during a ride. And cold hands are a thing of the past. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences. I appreciate them.

Thank you Michael for your supportive words. I appreciate them. My GTS has been reliable with the issues that have arisen being the sort of things one might expect from a machine in heavy use. When I have heard of people having terrible times with their Vespa, it's usually rooted in not being able to find qualified mechanics to sort out problems. I've talked with Vespa riders who have twice the mileage I do and more. With adequate maintenance and occasional repairs, they can go for a long, long time.

Having returned to 2 wheel enjoyment in 2002, and also with a passion and pastime photography vocation, I've always wanted a Vespa..but, started my journey on a smaller displacement cruiser, eventually moving up to a full on touring motorcycle. Since 2018, I've also enjoyed a Burgman 650 and PCX150. However, the Burgman hardly gets ridden and the Victory Cross Country Tour is now connected to a Hannigan sidecar. Since I just turned 70 in April, I've started rethinking my stable of bikes and scooters, and seriously thinking about selling the behemoth Burgman in favor of the Vespa 300 GTS. Your compelling videos and beautiful photographs have been a major inspiration in my desire to once and for all owning a Vespa. Thank you for ALL your posts about your beloved Vespa 🛵

I enjoyed this video and look forward to put more miles on my Vespa. I got a 2020 Vespa GTS 300 super and has been such a great decision buying it. First year I put 11,000 miles and look to keep the same pace. I do drive with it on the freeways 2/3 of the time and rides very smooth . I did put recently Dr Pully variator and weights plus put larger tires from 130 to 140 and 120 to 130 and the ride is much better. The lines in the road does not affect me as much and I am getting 5 to 10 more miles per gallon.

The new Vespa scooters look even more impressive than mine. Piaggio continues to refine and improve the mechanics and technology to deliver better performance. And with the mods you highlighted, the scooter is even better. Putting 11K miles in the first year has you doing a lot of riding. Like is great on a Vespa!

My latest bike is a 2021 Vulcan 650 S. I'm liking it, but hankering for a scooter again. I have had 3 bikes at one time, but that's not my aim anymore. One at a time, and the time for a scooter is here, if I get the right trade, deal, gift, whatever. I am not picky !

I try to keep things as simple as possible with my scooter. I'll spend more as I do less of the maintenance myself, but perhaps the biggest expense has been tires. My GTS is getting older but I hope to continue to ride it for a few thousand more miles before some major engine service rears its head.

Hello Steve. Mike here at 72 years old just starting to ride all these new acquisitions in the last 8 months: 2022 Vespa GTS 300 Racing 60's, 2022 BMW C400 GT scooter, 2018 BMW G310, GS , 2022 R1250 GSA 40th Year edition. Ride them all and yes, from large motorcycle to Vespa is a shocking experience but like it. Will continue to ride and keep the Vespa because of the uniqueness and the reputation even though as you said and I read the maintenance is more frequent and fussy. Just got 600 miles on so I'm waiting to be called here in Illinois to take it in for the initial servicing. Thanks for this video and others!!

Wow, that's quite a spread of moto-experiences at your fingertips. I've ridden the BMW G310 GS and was very impressed with its performance. I considered buying one before the Himalayan captured my attention. You are absolutely right about the shock going from a big bike to the scooter. I remember spending a day on an R1200 RT or a K1600GTL and then getting on the Vespa. I felt like I just got in a clown car. It's kind of amazing how adaptable we are though and it doesn't take long to get comfortable. I think maintenance is fussy on everything. I hear so many complaints about service that I pretty much don't pay attention anymore that one machine is better than another. I just follow the service recommendations and move on. It's nice to have a second or third choice to ride though so I don't have long periods of no riding. Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos and making comments. I appreciate it!

43,000 miles and 15 yrs, you’re qualified to review this scoot, if anyone is. I look at Scooters as 2nd rate just as you said m/cycle riders did. My background is fast motor bikes. Too many falls, resulting in a crooked aged carcass means I don’t ride them anymore. I have several bicycles which I greatly enjoy though. Lately, with the increase in fuel costs and my concern at our continued use of fossil fuels, I am considering purchasing a scooter. This Vespa has reared it’s head and so far in my research I haven’t heard a word to discourage me. I have enjoyed your review, thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge.

I’ve spent a lot of time on Vespa scooters. 43K on the current one and 13K on the previous one; an LX150. My high regard for them has not diminished and I still think they’re worth the premium price. The big change I’ve seen are fewer dealers and a little more work finding mechanics to work on them. I’ve long thought a scooter would be the last thing I ride. As the clock ticks near 68 I sure of it. I still ride motorcycles but someday it will be all scooters. I hope your research makes it clear whether a Vespa makes sense for you. Hopefully you can find one to test ride. They’re fun and relaxing. I have a Vespa video coming out tomorrow morning that looks at what I love about them.

Nice videos sir, thankyou. I also have two scooters, one is a piaggio bv 500 & the other is a 650 burgman, i take turns riding them & love them both, they both go like crazy & will keep up easily to most things on the road. I've noticed not so much highway derision, but more verbal attitude such as they're ok for a scooter but i would never own one, or did you drive that thing all the way here? I saw your video with your new himalayan & i have coveted one of those since about the first year they came out, unfortunately, i'd have to sell one of my bikes to afford one, i really couldn't choose which as i really enjoy them both, also, at 74, i don't know if i could toss my leg over anymore. I relly like yours & the colour is quite unique, i like it. Sorry to be so windy, it's nice to hear someone talk up the "scooter", you made my day with that. Bye now, keep on riding & i look forward to more stuff about both of your fine steeds, ric, ontario canada, thnx again eh!!.

Maxi-scooters are fast. And unless you are racing, they will absolutely keep up with anything on the road or highway. There's just something a lot of people just can't warm to on a scooter. I can't toss my leg over the Himalayan when I'm standing on the ground. The tail bag is too high to clear. So I mount and dismount cowboy-style -- I stand on the peg and can easily swing my leg over. I'm working on a new video now. Should post in another day or so.

For some reason some guys on Harleys look down on someone riding a scooter. Its silly. They probably never rode a Vespa. I like my Harley but sometimes the Vespa is just a better choice. The Vespa is so easy to park too. It goes anywhere my Harley does. It just does it easier. It's such a relaxing ride. Sport bikes are fine. I had a CBR 1000 and it was intense. Fun but intense. Sometimes you feel like your going supersonic. I just love riding the Vespa when I am in that Vespa mood. A person like me wants a variety of different machines. And the Vespa is one of those machines.
@ScooterintheSticks

There certainly are a lot of jokes made about scooters and scooter riders. I found they decreased dramatically when I was riding in winter and most of the Harleys and other motorcycles were in winter storage. There are good reasons to choose the Harley over the Vespa and vice-versa. And there definitely are ego issues associated with riding choices that no amount of information or common sense will surmount. I'm with you about different machines for different moods. I recently told my wife I wanted to get another motorcycle and she responded, "Don't you have enough?" It's difficult to describe the different feelings and responses to different machines to someone who doesn't ride. You and I know though!

I ride a Honda CRF 250 rally. I like to bimble along at 45 to 50 mph and just go exploring. Every time I see a Vespa 300 GTS I want one. I just love the look of them and I'm a big fan of scooters. I have owned Suzuki Burgmans and a Honda SH125 so I love the step through and ease of getting on and off. I also really like the CVT gearbox, I find them very relaxing. I saw two Vespas today at a biker cafe and thought it's time to investigate more so I searched on you tube for a long term review. I'm glad you found my review helpful. The GTS has proved to be a reliable companion to my riding in almost every environment. Like a lot of riders, the itch to add a second machine was strong. For several years the local BMW-Ducati-Triumph dealer had me doing reviews so I always had a motorcycle around. But when that stopped I started wondering about bikes and my wife surprised me with a vintage BMW K75. I loved that motorcycle but it didn't take long for me to realize I preferred the Vespa. I sold that motorcycle and bought a Royal Enfield Himalayan. But not to ride on the road but rather to use to explore the dirt and gravel mountain roads here. I road the GTS in that environment but it really took a beating since it wasn't designed for that. I've come to the conclusion that for the road -- the GTS has been, and will remain my favorite. The big question now is what to do when faced with some major engine issue. It's certain to come at some point. For now though, the Vespa GTS is running almost like new after all these miles. Good luck with your search and craving for a GTS!

@@ScooterintheSticks So just to update you. It's been five months since I wrote that comment but I just got a Vespa GTS 300 today and I could not be happier! I have watched a lot of your videos and the feeling you described when you ride the Vespa is something I have never experienced riding a motorbike. I have tried about 10 bikes in the last four years and spent a lot of money (that I don't have). I have always enjoyed the bikes and I love riding but there has always been something about the bike that annoyed me. Whether is was the loud engine, bike being too big or difficulty getting on and off, there was always something that took a bit of the joy away. Riding the GTS today and I suddenly fully understood that feeling of "flying", where the machine disappears and it's just me in the moment. It was then that I realised that it's not about the machine, the enjoyment is more about being out in the open, experiencing the weather, smells and that feeling of freedom. The Vespa does this waaaaaay better than any other machine I've tried. I cannot thank you enough, it was your videos that got me interested in them and it was the description of how you felt when riding it that convinced me to take the plunge today. I also love the look of the scoot and it made me smile the whole journey home which is worth every penny. Thank you!

@@markrobinson2648 I'm glad you've discovered the joys and thrills of riding a Vespa GTS. I think the experience is often missed by some motorcycle riders because they just can't bring themselves to ride a scooter. But once you do, and really give it a chance with an open mind, there's nothing quite like it. Granted there are certain types of riding it isn't suited for but if you just want to cruise the countryside or run around town, it's just great. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Another marvelous video, Steve! One other attribute of the Vespa is safety, which I can now personally vouch for, based on my accident from a few months back. I attribute the step-through frame as the reason both my legs are still intact after being broadside by a car at an intersection, where the bike took the brunt of the impact while I was thrown clear, ending up with relatively minor injuries. This also explains why my new bike is also A Vespa GTS. Keep up the good work here.

Thanks for your kind words! I'm not sure that's part of Piaggio's safety design but I'm glad you came through your unfortunate encounter with a car as well as you did. @@ScooterintheSticks Steve, actually Greece is a warm-climate country although recently all this became a myth as we suffer from the global warming results too. Nowadays it's snowing on a 5 degrees Celsius. But not for a long. As for my "wasps" I do have to admit that I miss the carburetted GT200 for its immediate punch! The 250 was the next step to injection and that previous engine type was always reaching the top speed of 140 km/h which was a Safety factor when riding on the highway. Now the HPE one (Yacht Club '19), is a little bit tricky regarding the oil consumption as I have to top up almost 200 gr every 2000 kms, depending of the riding style of course. The manual ridiculously says that oil should be changed every 10000 kms! That's crazy of course! I do the changes every 5000 kms. And finally I added the Kubler Disc on in order to gain the correct (and current) speed, reducing the error which had a deflection of almost 8 kms. Top speed reaches 132 km/h as the limiter takes the control after that scale!... I have 15130 kms now on the speedo and keep on going. I'm here with you and for you for anything might be discussed. Cheers 👍👍

@@munzirrafik7753 Hey my friend, hope you are doing well. My HPE now has 15346 km on the clock an I have to say that it has plenty of power needed especially when on the highway. In my possession since October '19. More specific, my previous GT200 had the carburettor which was a "punch" on the wheel and to be honest, I miss that. The 250 followed was the entry to the injection, it was a 2008 model which stayed with me from 18000 to 72350 km's on the clock. I'm sure Steve has a lot and more to tell about it...As for the HPE, there is only one thing I have to say to you : If I buy a bigger bike, the HPE 'll stand by me as long as SHE 'll stay alive! Listen to your heart, close your eyes, wake up in the morning, go to dealer and grab it! (P.S. some tips: for better acceleration disable the ASR by pressing the button on the right. And as for the oil change don't do what the manual ridiculously says (read the manual carefully) by changing the oil every 10000 kms....when the clock reads 4700-4900 pick up the phone and inform the dealer you're about to visit them for an oil change! Also check all fluid quantities once a month, including the oil dipstick. Just in case. I'll be glad to hear good news from you!👍).

Thank you for your comments about the video Ross. I appreciate them. Despite that particular experience with that group of Harley riders, my interactions with Harley and other riders have been positive. We have a moto-event here called the Moto Hang and it is open to all kinds of riders from Harleys to mini-bikes and everything in between. There are usually about 65 riders in attendance and everyone is genuinely happy to see and talk to others regardless of what they ride. I've had a few Harley riders stop and ask if I needed help when I had the Vespa parked along a rural road as I was taking pictures. Cars and trucks too. I feel grateful that people care. You asked about the longest ride I've made on the Vespa. That would be a one day trip of about 482 kilometers when I rode back to the place where I grew up. You can see that ride on my blog at the link below. It was an old post so in order to see each picture clearly you have to click on the pictures. I never got around to cleaning them up when I transitioned from Blogger to Wordpress. scooterinthesticks.com/2007/09/sacred-ground/ As winter approaches for you in Australia I hope you still find opportunities to ride!

For now though, I'll continue grinding forward with my Vespa until there is some sort of catastrophic failure that it doesn't make sense to repair.

Nice video it reminded me of scooter ride I did in PA Amish area near Reading PA rail road museum . PA has a lot of perfect roads to ride in the summer beauty full .I been to lots of eastern pa when I live in NYC . Go to port Jervis NY and ride the hawks nest road on the upper Delaware river scinic RD nat rec area . I have a mp 3 piaggio 500 . Been upstate NY and the hawks nest on port Jervis NY and would cross a small bridge in to pa to a gas station there just sit next to rail car museum park there it was like a day vacation from the Bronx NY .yeah . Treating s now I am near tombstone AZ riding year round . But I miss the Rivers and Atlantic Ocean ? I am planning a Pacific Coast hwy ride in CA big sur nat by way soon . But I been waiting for a rear shock for my piaggio mp3 500 that need been stored in garage 5 months and waiting for that to come from Italy ! But I got a Kawasaki 650 Vulcan s and klx 230 dual sports also but miss my scotter rides . Been thinking of trading my mp3 piaggio for vespa 300 hpe ? That 3 wheels scooter is hard to get parts in USA and nobody likes to work on it ?.but I like it . I t rides good every where .

You're right about Pennsylvania having a lot of great roads on which to ride. And while I've never ridden in the Delaware River Scenic Area, I have explored in a car. It's a beautiful place. Snow. I used to love it. Now, I simply tolerate it. Arizona would provide many non-snow options though I suspect the heat in Yuma may be just as bad as snow sometimes. I spent a couple weeks with a Piaggio MP3 250 years ago and it was sort of amazing in what it could do. And so stable on all kinds of surfaces, especially ones with gravel. But as you indicate, I had concerns about parts and service. It was so complicated that it seemed like a Piaggio trained technician would be required for a lot of work. So I put the MP3 out of my mind. I'm not completely familiar with the new HPE Vespa models, but I have a gut feeling about their complexity. I'll need to do a little more investigation before I would ever jump to buy one. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your comments. I appreciate them.

The GTS 300 was one of the finalists on my list of contenders for my delivery bike. It really only lost out due to the HPE engine's maintenance costs / frequency. It also didn't meet my target fuel economy, but that was just an arbitrary number that I personally set for business reasons. That said, if I wasn't looking at from the standpoint of a business vehicle... I'd love to have a GTS. Ive had several Vespas over the years and I loved them.

I have the same concerns about the HPE's maintenance costs and frequency. They've turned it into a fussy Ducati on that level. That's why I'll look to a used GTS in the non-HPE realm. They're getting harder and harder to find though. I've looked at other scooters but none of them tweak my aesthetic sense like the Vespa. For now, I'm just going to utilize denial that anything might need to be addressed!

About the tires. I think that Vespas have huge fan base and many accessories and kits. One of those is 13" wheels and have huge impact.
@ScooterintheSticks
@ScooterintheSticks 2 жыл бұрын
I've not tinkered with the wheel or tire sizes. The only modification I've made was to purchase a separate set of rims for my winter tires so I could easily swap them when the time came. I know a lot of Vespa owners make serious modifications to their scooters from big bore kits to things like tires and exhaust systems. I'm happy with the mechanical performance so most of the modifications I've made are utilitarian -- more storage, winter tires, heated grips, that sort of thing. But you're right about the huge fan base means there are many, many accessories available for a Vespa.

I come from cruiser motorcycles but my current location is far more inclined toward something like this. I wanted something with a classic look but I am finding this is more than that. So much utility in such a beautiful package. Harley could learn a thing or two. I hope to get a Yellow 2022 GTS Super 300 in the coming months. Thanks for your review! It's honest and down to earth people like you that get me interested in platforms that are new to me. So much bias against these things sadly.

@@ScooterintheSticks Very nice to get a response! While I have you, the only complaint I am hearing that I am concerned with is that this has the tiniest wheels of any other scooter in its class and some people say that makes it unstable over bumps. Are people exaggerating this a bit? Did you have any issues feeling unstable maybe in a situation where you are going around a corner and hit a bump?
@ScooterintheSticks
@ScooterintheSticks 2 жыл бұрын
@@kairyonaznable20 I think the problem with the concerns about "stability" are almost always because of comparisons to machines with bigger wheels and tires. For instance, my 12 inch tires on the GTS are not nearly as smooth or stable as the 21 inch tires on the Himalayan. They definitely feel and act differently. That does not mean the 12 inch tires are unstable. I have over 60 thousands miles on small tire Vespa scooters and both the 10 inch and 12 inch tires are stable in my opinion, even at speeds over 60mph. But they feel different. Some say twitchy. I say they're more nimble. With small wheels you can dart back and forth in ways that I can't on a motorcycle. And because they respond so quickly many motorcyclists who ride a scooter for the first time utter "unstable" because they don't realize they have to adjust how they manage a scooter versus a motorcycle. For me, I have absolutely no concerns about stability on the small tires. And I accept they won't feel like a bigger tire. In terms of handling bumps -- aside from potholes larger than the tires I feel my Vespa handles bumps fine and I can't remember a time when I felt the suspension and tire size put me "out of control." Just this morning I was on the GTS and encountered a tree limb in my path, perhaps 3 inches in diameter. I could not avoid it so I hit the throttle to lighten the front wheel and the scooter went over it fine though with a distinct "thump." My Himalayan would have barely noticed it with the 21 inch front tire. In closing, I would say there is nothing inherently unstable or dangerous with the GTS (save for front end wobble on deceleration when you take your hands off the bars) and it's all a matter of getting used to the unique characteristics of a Vespa. It will be the same with anything you ride. Every machine has something or other that people will suggest is a defect. I hope this helps.

I have a 2009 gts 250 with 3,000 miles on it when I bought it. The first and only failure so far has been the fuel pump. I found that there was a recall on it. So I inquired about it and sure enough there was. So to get it replaced didn't cost me anything. But I had to trailer it to a dealership. The closest one was two and a half hours away. But I got it there and they installed the new fuel pump. I was soooooo thankful that the manufacturer stood behind the recall of a scooter that was 13 years old! Now, it runs like a new one. I do wish it had a kick starter like my Honda Metropolitans. The Metropolitans start even if the battery is removed entirely. Typical Hondas. They are also 2009.
@ScooterintheSticks
@ScooterintheSticks 2 жыл бұрын
My Vespa LX150 had a kick starter but it turned out that it wasn't as durable as one would find on a motorcycle with a kick starter. It was easy to crack the side casing when kick starting. So I never used it after learning of that expensive repair. I understand the desire for a kick starter, especially when scooter batteries seem to just suddenly die sometimes. My solution was to purchase a tiny Anti-Gravity lithium battery to carry along in the topcase. It had enough power to jump start my car. I've had to use it twice on the scooter over the years and I'm glad I had it along. The Honda Metropolitans and the Yamaha Vinos have actual functional kick starters. They're great machines.

I had a 2004 Granturismo and loved the ride. It was comfortable and quick enough for short jaunts on the interstate. The water pump started leaking at 6000 miles and I sold it to a mechanic I know. It was better looking and more comfortable than my Burgman 200. The Vespa was definitely quicker and smoother than my Himalayan. Ride safe .

A lot of Vespa guys swear the GT200 is the best. Simple, reliable, and quick. While my GTS250 is reliable and quick, it is a bit more complex. But so far no major drawbacks. The GTS is definitely quicker than the Himalayan. Not by much but it feels quick in comparison. It doesn't really matter to me though because I didn't get either of them to go fast. Both the Vespa and the Royal Enfield Himalayan are tools for exploring. And to embrace the quiet serenity of riding alone on the backroads. I love them both.

A lot goes into consideration of a first scooter for a son or daughter. For my youngest daughter, the Vespa scooters were all too tall. So she got a Yamaha Vino 125. She can easily flat foot that scooter. In Pennsylvania, anything over 50cc requires a motorcycle license which is another consideration. I did some training with her and she took the MSF course on her Vino and got a motorcycle license. A 50 would have made the licensing a non-issue but she would not have had the same ease of riding and commuting.

@ScooterintheSticks
@ScooterintheSticks Жыл бұрын
Scooter theft isn't an issue where I am. I've accidentally left the keys in the scooter all day long parked in town. And my seat lock hasn't worked in ten years but nothing has ever been stolen. I realize that living in rural Pennsylvania is different than many more urban places where there are more scooters and a bigger market for parts and such. With so few scooters here the only reason for theft would be joy rides I think.

@ScooterintheSticks
@ScooterintheSticks Жыл бұрын
A Battery Tender is essential if you aren’t riding regularly for 20 miles or more. The other issue that can arise is buying inexpensive batteries. The kind you find at Wal-Mart or an auto parts store. Even though the specs seem the same those batteries are usually meant for lawn tractors and such. Don’t skimp on batteries. Buy from a motorcycle dealer and try to get the same model and manufacturer. My GTS battery is a YUSA.

Well, I'm sure they could out do my speed. I suspect they didn't want to risk a speeding ticket because of a scooter. I agree with you that every motorcycle should try a scooter with an open mind. Sadly, a lot of riders I've spoken with seem to have some preconceptions for which they go out of their way to support. High speeds and power being a couple of issues. And lack of stability being another. After riding something big, the scooter can feel twitchy in it's nimbleness. Like any new ride, it requires some time to get used to. They are absolutely great fun and practical!

I've never found the need for ABS or traction control yet. I have it on my Himalayan but it has never engaged yet. I've read that if you practice braking you can stop faster without ABS.
