This is the very impressive story of Alexander Eischeid's trip from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego on a Vespa PX125! In 22 months he travelled 71,000km, visited 19 countries, broke eight pistons, two cylinders and three brake drums.

This guy is crazy. I don't mean that in an offensive way, but I would never have attempted what he did. I have been riding motorcycles all over the U.S., Canada, and Mexico for 45 years. The only U.S. state I have not been to is Hawaii. Well over a million miles. In 2002 I rode from Phoenix, AZ USA to Deadhorse (Prudhoe Bay) AK and back on a 1998 Kawasaki KLR650. I made it, but had a lot of problems. Lots of flat tires, bad gas, passing trucks threw gravel at me, breaking my headlight, turn signals, and a couple of helmet face shields. But the biggest problem was the mud. Most people think of mud as being brown. The Mud on the Dalton Highway is gray. That is because it is part dirt, and part calcium chloride (basically salt) They put that on the roads to help with traction for big trucks and equipment. But it is very bad for motorcycles. When it dries it is like concrete. Even a high pressure car wash will not get it off. And it got into my radiator. I wound up having to order a new radiator, and rig up a way to help protect it from this stuff. It was a 9,000 mile trip that took almost 2 months. By the time I got back the motorcycle was all but destroyed. Despite my attempts to wash the salt off, the bike was badly rusted and corroded. I never did get it clean. That gray mud was so hard you had to remove it with a chisel. I decided after a while it was not worth keeping and spending money on, so I sold it cheap. I can't imagine making that trip, let alone all the way to Tierra del Fuego on a Vespa. I own a 1979 Vespa P200E. The engine was built by a local vintage Vespa shop with some reliability upgrades. I belong to a local vintage Vespa club. A couple of the members own the shop. We go for 100-200 mile rides, and even then some of the Vespas break down. Mine never has, but I went to the trouble of having it built right. I am an auto mechanic, and have done a lot of work on motorcycles, including the Vespa, but am not that familiar with the Vespa engine, which is why I had it done by experts/enthusiasts. I love riding it, but I would never consider a long distance trip on it, even within the U.S. I did see that video ScooterWest did on this guy. I just found this video. I get a lot of parts from Scooterwest, but their main focus is modern Vespas with EFI, something I have no interest in. At 2 months away from being 63, and with severe arthritis and bad joints, my long distance riding days are over. Like this guy, I never had a video camera on my rides. All I have are pictures, most of them taken with a film camera, my diaries, and some mementos I picked up along the way on various trips. I have a lot of respect for this guy, and wish him the best of luck on any future trips. But I still think he is crazy.

@041e71
@041e71 4 жыл бұрын
actually some people only use chainsaw oil in their vespas since chainsaws usually rev higher and thus need better quality oil. so it is not even an emergency solution but can be used without problems. it might be a bit pricier though

In Brazil by law the concentration of ethanol in gasoline is fixed: 27,5% (not 70% as stated). Prices in gas stations are free, but base price in refinery is set by the government through its state refinary company Petrobras. It was this way by the time of that trip. Hi mate, well done, great travel, I’m planning to do that.. If interested i some vespa travel history, it starts in 1964, with Roberto Patrignani, when he made Milan-Tokio, and at that time was much harder to pass all the eastern countries, Russia, India, Cine etc.. Bu the best vespa traveller was Giorgio Betttinelli, he made the same travel as your, Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, in 1995, and Roma-Saigon in 1992, and many other vespa travels, for more that a total of 350.000 km around the world. One of the first (if not the first) motorcycle long way travellers war Carlo Guzzi (Moto Guzzi founder), to test the first complete elastic frame in the motorcycle history, that he realized il 1927. In 1928 he made a trip from Mandello del Lario to Capo Nord with his Moto Guzzi GT 500 Norge, more that 12000km (two ways), with the inexistent roads for that time.. And may others in more recent times from all the countries of the world...

I remember as a young man 45 years ago while working on a remote highway , myself & my wife were away from camp collecting water near the WA/ SA border when we came across a wiry fit young man . He was alone & running around the world . He told us that he`d run through Iran & Afghanistan on his way , and our road ( The old Eyre Hwy ) was the worst he`d come across any where in the world . He shared his story with us & I gave him my only beer which he gratefully drank there & then . If you do come to Australia be sure to get in touch with me .
