Vet DIVES into river to save injured BABY GOOSE!

Whilst we try to be as prepared as we possibly can be on rescues, we are sometimes faced with having none of our rescue equipment to hand! In this particular instance, our team had only just released a buzzard when they were asked to help rescue an injured baby goose that has fishing line tangled around its legs.
With only one short net on hand, Maru, our lead vet, had to get a little creative to make sure we could help the poor bird...

Now, if all these hobby fishermen would pay attention to their gear, and not leave lines behind... shame on them! Way too many birds and other wildlife is injured or killed by lines, nets and hooks, it's just too sad, and so avoidable.

I saved a goose from fishing line (well, I tried not sure if it lives today). The hook was securely attached under it's wing and the line was heavy and had locked that wing tight to the gooses side. It wrapped around her body a dozen times and then led up to the tounge, making the goose have a crinked neck 100% of the time. It couldn't get low enough to eat grass without sitting down and it obviously couldn't fly. I had to dive on it (it was the only way, tempting with bread didn't work) and I examined the line. It was wrapped around it's tounge so tight (and so many times!) the end of it's tounge had gone black. I had no knife but I managed to burn the line with my lighter, unwrap the wing (freed the wing) which allowed the goose to move it's neck normally. Couldn't get the hook out (feathers too thick) and I didn't know what to do about the tounge but I burned the line all the way to the edge of it's bill. Hopefully it lived! I was motioning to the parkie when she bit me and bolted and escaped to the middle of the lake. Didn't seem like the parkies were interested.

I know right!! I had an ill pigeon for 9 days until it was flying around my condo. lol She was so sick when I met her no resistance whatsoever but 9 days later she was so strong. I opened the door she walked then flew to the railing where an adult pigeon immediately snuggled her. I really hope that was her family. Then flying off communicating about the past 9 days! Lol

I know it might seem crazy but have you ever tried a 'seam ripper' for removing fishing line? It's meant for unpicking lines of sewing but it has a point you could slide under the line and a cutting edge. ☺️

Not crazy at all! It is meant for picking and cutting threads without hurting the fabric - it takes a good eye and a skilled hand to use it. My only question is - would it be sharp enough to cut a plastic line without pulling the line into the flesh? I think it would. You would need a very small one.

Excellent job! Hope Dr. Maru and Lawrie got cleaned up really good after the rescue--that water was gross. Wish you folks were in my neighborhood. I've had a rafter of Royal Palm Turkeys in my front yard this past week. Mom showed up about a month ago by herself. Last week she showed up with fourteen poults, a couple of juveniles, a couple of hens and a tom. I put out some water for them because it has been 100+ F this week. I suppose they enjoy the grass and shade provided by the Ginko trees. Again, great job!!
