“They don’t need a lot of exercise cuz they can’t.” Lol you put it perfectly. It’s sad that some people think deformities which harm a dog’s function and health are “cute”. It’s the same with cats. They’re breeding these “munchkin” cats now who have super short legs. As if Persians without noses or jaws weren’t bad enough…😣

Glad I watched this. I’m the owner of a 9 year old Great Dane and was considering one of these small dog breeds for my next dog. I’m in my 60’s and a smaller dog might be nice. You’ve changed my mind. I still with Danes.. They are surprisingly low maintenance. Thanks for making this video.

I did own a pug who was unusually healthy for most of his life. He was a lovely, sweet family dog. He was still not a low-maintenance dog though. It took a lot of work to keep him at a good weight, to keep him warm, to keep him cool, to keep him moving, and to train him. Being stubborn is part of their breed, it's why they can be so difficult to groom.
@carolynk.98562 жыл бұрын
I agree with what you said for the most part. At my clinic we see many Maltese with heart issues/failure and they require quite a bit of regular grooming. Also one of the French bulldogs they showed had a cherry eye, I was surprised that you did not mention that. Anyway I do agree they are a very high maintenance breed. We also see many eye issues with the brachiocephalic breeds.

I'm surprised there aren't any real terriers on the low maintenance list. All three of the terriers my family had were very healthy dogs, especially our rat terrier who lived to be almost 19 and didn't have any serious health problems until she was 17 years old and got kidney disease.
@DVMCellini3 жыл бұрын
Me too. Terriers I think might be the real lowest maintenance dog breed.

Hi Doctor, Could you do a sort of opposite vid for this - what are the actual 7 healthiest/low maintenance breeds from your perspective??
@belgadog992 жыл бұрын
i remember asking the neurosurgeon back in the 90s this very same question! Let me tell you exactly what he said: I have operated on every breed..so i cannot suggest a breed that has zero health issues. The large breeds: more neck surgery and issues with Wobblers and yes disc herniations too.Bigger dogs can have more hip, elbow issues that needs surgery. Small and medium sized breeds: more disc issues in the lower back..So, get the breed that you always wanted, as the dog's personality is what makes you love them. get pet insurance ! Talk to dog owners, which insurance is best for that breed? do they pay or fight you all the way? I heard Trupanion does not argue about disc herniations in dachshunds (some insurance will claim, it is a pre-existing condition) ! BTW im in Canada, so speak to people in you general area about pet insurance !

Maltese is one of the most high maintenance breed out there when it comes to their coat. That coat is silky and fine and requires a special kind of owner to truly keep detangled and well kept. Even if you are not keeping a full coat you have to keep on top of it and see the groomer regularly. That is something that you have to think about when you say "low maintenance". People think low maintenance means that they have nothing to worry about, it's a dangerous label to slap on a breed.
@carolinevel943 жыл бұрын
This vid is hilarious 😂 I mean except for the Maltese all of these dogs are the most high maintenance possible... like the kind you say to the owner please get insurance The first time you see them 😅 But then Boxers are my favorite breed ever so what do I know ^^

If you really want a low maintenance dog get a mutt. In most circumstances, the mixed genes result in a dog thats healthier due to the lower risk of inherited or predisposed conditions and diseases. 🙃

Even though the Maltese is healthy compared to the others, it is not "low" maintenance either. You have to groom them often..

I love how u educate us on all kinds of animals. I hope 1 day u cover poodles and there different personalities. We have a toy poodle I say it's miniature But we do a teddy bear cut on her as once we did a poodle cut and it did not fit her personality. She's had alot of back issues neck thoracic lumbar. Cancer of jaw with major reconstruction work skin issues.2 abdominal surgeries. She's our 11000 dog. We got her at 6 weeks old Im 2009. Her brother is fine. She has the energized bunny personality. Keep the videos comming. Very interesting. Thank u.

I adopted a puppy from an SPCA 15 years ago. I have no idea what breeds he was made from. He was 50 pounds as an adult. He just died last month, and aside from hayfever, he had never been sick in those 15 years. I'm not ready for another dog yet, but if I am someday I'll be bringing home another mutt.

I think low energy stuff for the human that the dog still likes is a better way to go. For me that is a dog that likes to dig! I sit outdoors drink my coffe and being lazy the dog works hard digging! Other ideas are throw the dogs food out on the floor or hide it :)

Pretty much any dog that isn't chondystrophic (long body, short legs) or brachycephalic and you should be good to go.

Grew up with border collies and border collie mixes, great dogs but definitely high maintenance. Extremely active dogs, ours did agility competition and had 3 walks (2 short, 1 long) per day. Very minimal health problems until late in life though.
@ettinakitten50472 жыл бұрын
Yeah, border collies may be healthy but their temperament is definitely high maintenance. They're one of the most intelligent dog breeds, which while good for highly trained working dogs, is bad for a low-stimulation lifestyle like being a family pet. They also have a very high activity level and a tendency to anxiety.

And then the people who ask us multiple times; in the beginning, at the end, and other times. Look at Dr John Campbell at 2.2 million subscribers and he said he never asked anybody even once. I’m done venting.

Who put that list together?! Not a vet and I could have pretty much given a similar "review". I'm kind of surprised EBD didn't end up on the list too the way it was going. You have to know with all the brachy dogs there are special considerations that potential owners need to be aware from (before) the outset. So many EBDs end up in shelters and rescue precisely because people don't really know about dogs, much less high maintenance dogs. We've been fortunate enough to have rescued 3 healthy EBDs partly because we educated ourselves.

I have a Beabull (Beagle/English bulldog mix). I love her more than anything, but I now see that the bulldog breeding is not fair to the animal. I picked her because she had a longer snout and I thought she might not have as much breathing issues....I was inexperienced and not knowledgeable to the fact that the breathing issues can be caused by more than just the short noses in bulldogs. Bulldogs have a lot of other internal deformities typically that can contribute to breathing issues. When she was a baby, I got her pet insurance and it was the best thing I ever did. We use it A LOT. She is low maintenance on energy to a degree, she loves to play and walk still, but not to an extent of some higher energy dogs. However, health concerns should be factored into maintenance levels because we spend A LOT of time traveling hours to vets and vet specialists, cooking for her due to allergies, feeding her multiple times a day due to acid reflux, etc etc. So, you are entirely right .... maintenance levels should include health
@guiltriple2 жыл бұрын
It feels like the makers of this video went with "which b reeds require less active involvement from the owner" in a really weird way. Like, deadly health issues you can huck onto a veterinarian so it's fine, but god forbid a dog breed that requires the owner to exercise it frequently.

I have owned and worked with various breeds throughout the years and I must say I agree with almost all of your comments on this video except for the ones regarding chihuahuas. Temperament wise they really are very low maintenance when raised correctly and then health is very consistent when breed correctly as well (they don't really get sick very often) and one of their biggest issues are collapsed tracheas, reverse sneezing and/or luxating patella but nothing life threatening. They also, like many breeds, benefit from teeth cleanings. Regarding the apple and deer head comparison - apple head shapes are not automatically linked to moleras (fontanelle) in a chihuahua- moleras and hydrochephaly are usually (not always) a result of poor breeding. The AKC for example only recognizes the apple head chihuahua - as the deer head does not meet their standards.

Wow, I've got 2 of the 7 in one! What are your thoughts on the mixes? I have a Frenchton, 50/50, and other than allergies, she's healthy. 4 years old and still pretty spunky! Always known mutts to be healthier, but is that really true? Thanks!
@DVMCellini3 жыл бұрын
Mixing 2 breeds doesn't mean they get double the problems. Genetics is not 1+1 = 2. It's 1+1 = 0,1, or 2.
