The Winchester 1897 is my dream shotgun. Slam fire is so fucking cool. I still find it hilarious that Germany protested their use during WW1 for being too effective and "unethical" for their brutality. Keep in mind that Germany was also the first nation in WW1 to use flamethrowers and poison gas. (France actually was the first to use gas during the conflict, but it was just tear gas. Germany was the first to use deadly chemical weapons, primarily chlorine gas.)

Germany was the first country to use gas. They used a crude version of tear gas on the eastern front in an attempt to flush Russian troops out of their trenches, but a combination of their deployment method and the cold temperature meant that the gas did not disperse properly, so it had limited effectiveness. England was the first country to use lethal gas when they used specialized equipment to create a cloud of chlorine gas to drift across no man's land into German trenches. The funny thing is that in the 1890's the Geneva Accords had made the use of gas of any variety a war crime. Of course it also made the use of bombs dropped aircraft a war crime, but that got changed after the Italio-Turk war when Italy dropped 6 bombs from a monoplane. The Ottoman Empire took Italy to court in Switzerland seeking reparations for the bombs dropped and the Italian lawyer argued that the wording of the law only forbade the droping of bombs from lighter-than-air craft, since airplanes are heavier-than-air craft, they were not covered under the accords. The judge ruled that Italy violated the spirit of the law but not the letter and therefore could not be forced to pay reparations.

@oldeskul France used tear gas as early as August of 1914 [Several chemicals were weaponized in WWI and France actually was the first to use gas - they deployed tear gas in August 1914. The agent used was either xylyl bromide, which is described as smelling ‘pleasant and aromatic’, or ethyl bromoacetate, described as ‘fruity and pungent.’] - from "Gas in the Great War" by James Patton, Military Historian

I see selective fire shotguns in future conflicts becoming more commonplace. The U.S. already has the AA-12 and from what we've seen with the effectiveness of drone swarms in the Russo-Ukrainian War, the AA-12 will probably get a few upgrades for anti-personell, anti-drone and close-quarters combat. That being said, the pump action won't go away, because the sounds of it racking is intimidating as anyone who hears it will know what's about to happen.
