I can remember upgrading from a 5 to a 6 speed close ratio block (Regina 12-17) to match my single 50 tooth chainring in the late 70s - I felt like a God! Fantastic interview!

Brilliant interview...I had the pleasure of John comming past me in the 1982 Manchester Wheelers 100 I still have the finish sheet. I was No 92 and he was Scratch Man No 100. Guess at around 10 mls in he passed. Tried to maintain a gap for a little while but his pace was so much higher and he just gradually pulled away into the distance and dissapeared not to be seen again, By me that was.

John passed me like a steam train as a schoolboy time trialist in the early 80's....an inspiration

I grew up in Reading and in 1958-9, when I was 15-16, I did club cycling with the Reading Wheelers and also a couple of 25 mile time trials in that area, alas with very slow times! John confirms in the interview that he was a member of that club at one time, but I think it was through my friend in the club Patrick Thomas and his friend Robin Jenkins that I got to meet John. Robin was mainly into track racing as I remember, but he used to go out training in the evenings with John and I remember once Patrick and I tagging along (or trying to!) on a winter evening on the minor roads north of Reading towards Woodcote where John lived. We struggled to keep their rear lights in view though, let alone catch up! I drifted away from club cycling after that, but I still have very happy memories of it and subsequently of the pleasure of hearing that John became national 25 champion. I remember John's wry humour and his total commitment. What an amazing career and such an interesting man in so many ways. It was a joy to see and hear him talking in this interview. Steve Elder

Excellent interview. Many thanks for posting. Reading John Taylor's End to End book brought me here. John Woodburn seems to have been a wise and honest man, as well as an exceptional cyclist.

I'm a South Londoner and was a member of the Kentish Wheelers Cycling Club and after basic training did my National Service in Reading, Berkshire. i mixed with John Woodburn and often did road trainng with him because my recollection is that he lived in the area. Thanks for this Woodburn video - a really nice surprise I also rode a Claud Butler for a period. My name is Ian Cameron. I wasn't as fine a rider as JW.
