Not really obvious why this chap NEEDS a service dog. He has one and of course businesses should obey the law on that but having a prothetic limb seems too little a reason for the dog. Parking perhaps, that seems reasonable but what purpose does the dog serve, what service does it provide. It may be perfectly legitimate but there is not enough information, beyond the victim card being played, to support the chap with the dog.

Thank you for your service and sacrifice. I used to work at a resort as head of security and when a woman showed up for check in one evening she had with her a service dog. I do not know what her disability was, but the fact that she had a certified service dog with her was enough for me. I gave her a room on the ground floor to make things easier for her and the dog. Later that night a person came to me requesting that the dog be removed from the hotel because she simply did not like dogs. After about 10 minutes of trying to explain to her that the service dog had every right to be in the building, I realized that this woman just couldn't be educated on the fact that this dog wasn't going anywhere. I politely gave her directions to another hotel and that would be (as far as I concerned) the only solution to HER problem. She complained to my boss about it the next day and he backed me up 100%. I am a Vietnam Veteran with PTSD issues and I have a PTSD dog for a companion, she is not certified, but no one has ever given me any problems when she accompanies me when I feel the need to have her with me. Again, thank you for your service, JOB WELL DONE.

I used to have a boss who was just that idiotic. Way back, before ADA came into being, we also have Section 504 of the 1973 Rehab Act. I used to work at a university and we were expected to accommodate all types of disabilities. A student was accepted to the university who was both deaf and blind. She also had a guide dog to be her eyes for her. Common sense should have told everyone that this deaf-blind student, with a seeing eye dog, had a legal right to accommodations. My then-boss started making comments about not allowing the guide dog onto campus. I asked the dumb boss, how do you expect a deaf-blind student to navigate the campus without her guide dog? Dumbass announces that the student would be forced to use a white cane instead! I asked the dumbass boss how they were going to explain THAT in court when we get sued for unlawful discrimination under Section 504?!?!? Dumbass gave the glassy eyed blank stare! Duh!! The dog stayed!

I'm blind, and I've had a guide dog. To all disabled people, just because you're not blind like me, that doesn't mean your dog doesn't provide service as valuable as guide dogs do. All disabled people deserve to be out and about with their service dogs, no matter what their disability is! And, to all businesses? It's not ok to ask a disabled person to disclose their disability in order to receive service with their service dog by their side! That, if you ask me, is an invasion of one's privacy!

I, too, have a dog from the same organization. I'm very hard of hearing -- something that does not show. Am fighting now with one restaurant in town over access at lunch time. I handed the owner the rules, he copied them. And still argues that we make others in the restaurant uncomfortable. Yes, those who said no should be embarassed. As the vet (thank you, thank you -- I married a vet) said, not all disabilities show.

I have a service dog for debilitating anxiety disorders, ADHD, Asperger’s syndrome, sensory processing disorder, tachycardia, headaches, allergies and GERD with a hiatal hernia. She’s trained to alert and respond to ALL accordingly. I’ve gained my independence and safety back with her. At first, I was terrified to go into public. I can’t stand crowds, loud noises, strange textures, bright lights, and heat. I used to shut down or vomit depending on the situation. Now I can go everywhere knowing if something silent is about to occur. She’ll alert so I can get to safety.

It is absolutely not always obvious that an animal is a service animal... a dog can be trained to do a task to serve a person with a disability and still not be perfectly behaved in all aspects.
@infurnitepurrsibility778
@infurnitepurrsibility778 7 жыл бұрын
Chipwhitley274 there is a difference between a service dog that can go anywhere and a emotional support animal. A SERVICE DOG has to be well mannered and go threw crazy testing before being labeled a service animal. A emotional support animal dosnt have to go threw the same training but it is not allowed to go EVERYWERE with you. I worked at a animal shelter that would fully train certain dogs to be service dogs. it is a crazy amount of training and the dogs act perfectly. but we would also trained dogs to be Canine Good citizens or emotional support animals which can't go everywhere with you in public but can bypass the no animals clause in an apartment.
@Chipwhitley274
@Chipwhitley274 7 жыл бұрын
INFURNITE PURRSIBILITY, "there is a difference between a service dog that can go anywhere and a emotional support animal." What gave you the impression that I didn't understand that? I guess you missed the part where I said: " dog can be trained to do a task to serve a person with a disability ..." That is the distinction which separates an emotional support animal with a service animal. "A SERVICE DOG has to be well mannered and go threw crazy testing before being labeled a service animal." That is a lie. There is no certification or testing that is required by law to establish such a standard As long as a service animal is trained to do a task related to a disability... they do not have to be perfectly behaved. That is not to say they can be disruptive, destructive, aggressive or violent... If a dog is aggressive, or is constantly barking, or is damaging property, or harming people etc... then they can be ordered to leave... just like any person who behaves in such a manner. But a dog can be distracted, sniff things, try to get attention from people, pull on a leash or any number of reasons that would cause them to not be considered "well mannered"... and still legally be considered a service animal if they are trained to do a task to mitigate a disability.

Chipwhitley274 I'm really ignorant about what is legal for a service dog. I know someone who has a dog and they put a vest on it and call it a service dog and they bring it into businesses like stores where you normally can't bring dogs. This dog was not trained at all it's just their pet. They love their dog and it is nice but it has no special training. So when I see this I can see why people would be hesitant in believing a dog as a service dog like the dog in this video. Personally I wish we could bring our dogs into more businesses a ND areas. FYI Bar Harbor ,Maine and Acadia National Park are very dog friendly
@yeahokaycoolcool
@yeahokaycoolcool 7 жыл бұрын
Merri Cat Yeah, that's not a service dog. And to reply to chip, it's in the guidelines of the ADA that a service dog must basically be perfectly behaved. The reason for this is so the dog will always be listening for commands from its handler. That being said, service dogs in training are allowed to enter businesses as fully trained service dogs are, but their behaviors might be a little rough. I believe the ADA recommends at least 30 hours of training in public areas like stores. That would be the only circumstance where a real service dog would be slightly misbehaved. A dog that is out of control with an owner that is making little to no effort to control the dog is not a service dog, going by the ADA guidelines. They are the only legal force behind these animals and, from what I understand, there are 17 states where it's illegal to fake a service dog (which would be a badly behaved dog with a fake vest/documentation and a lying owner) and more are working on it. So, yes, there is a legal backbone to this shit.

I’m a disabled veteran with a service dog and can’t even count the number of times I’ve been humiliated and turned away. Apologies after I’ve had to make a complaint to corporate or file an official complaint are empty, meaningless. And I’m sick of hearing the lame promises about training their employees after the damage has been done. If they wouldn’t challenge a wheelchair they shouldn’t challenge a service dog. As for fake service dogs, these are very easy to spot. They’re untrained and out of control but that’s not an excuse to penalize a genuine service team, ever.

A major part of this problem is the fact that a lot of people try to pass their dog off as a service dog, because they want to take them with them. Service dogs are trained, pets are not. I believe that the service dog owner should have an official ID or some form of visible identification that a pet owner would not have, or at least not legally have. Shouldn't happen, but it does. I also believe that a lot of businesses make claims that a dog is not a service dog becaue they simply do not want them in their place.

yeah i get it that it was rude of the employee.. but "hero humaliated"... come ooon. Where is the humaliation? there is nothing to be ashamed about a lost leg. how can you humaliate sb if you ask him if his dog is legit? the employee got humaliated for doing sth so stupid. Don´t try to police what other people say and think.. there will already be social repercussions for acting like an idiot, that is already enough. If i see a handicaped person who got asked if his service dog is legit I would be pissed as well, but if the guy who made the stupid mistake getting non stop shit I would get pissed as well.. we all make mistakes, dont blow it out of proportion. there was no harm done, goin outside means interacting with others and sometimes it is not pleasant and mistakes are made. I am pretty sure that that "humaliated hero" made some stupid things in his life as well, we all did. So what would be the appropiate response/ reaction in such a situation? Well for example like "here you fucker, I lost a leg, now shut the fuck up and piss off, idiot!". That would be acceptable and enough.. dont go public with it and say that you are on a mission to rehabilitate people.. cause the majority of people already know that this is a stupid thing to do. Well this is my opinion, feel free to rage me for it, but I would prefer logical arguements if you disagree ;)

Regardless of whom should be embarrassed it is embarrassing. When I first be ale disabled I could still drive and walk through a store. I had a disabled sticker. Healthy people would glare at me and one yelled at me that I was faking to take advantage of working people and the system. I followed her into the store and politely explained my disability. It e,fed when she snidely comments "so you say." I responded " you have entirely to much time on your hands!"

Until recent years, most people only knew about seeing-eye dogs for the blind. Service dogs seemed to come out of nowhere, so it's understandable that there is ignorance and confusion about them. Be prepared to educate some people (You don't have to give lectures, but hand out cards with pertinent websites)... Keep your humor and wits about you, because if you are in a shitty mood and are projecting it outward, NO ONE will care to understand or empathize with you. Every person with a service dog should have a short statement ready that concisely explains their situation on a human level. Saying politely to a store manager: "I get seizures. If I should have one in your store, my service dog is trained to protect my head and calm me down" -- will get a much better response than "Service dogs are legal and allowed on these premises per local statute blah blah blah and you are denying me my rights blah blah"... Unfortunately, I see too many videos where the disabled person has the latter attitude, even threatening to sue or get someone fired -- then are shocked and when the manager gets a similar attitude and calls their bluff. It's called human nature.

Walmart is on a national mission to ban American Disabled Veterans, needing Service Animals, from their stores. I am a 100% Service-Connected Disabled Veteran and Walmart assaulted me for bringing a Service Animal into their store and then said I created a disturbance because I told them they were violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and I wanted to speak to the store manager. According to the Charlotte County Florida Sheriff's Office it is a serious crime to say you have a right under the Americans with Disabilities Act.The Justice Department refuses to enforce Veterans Rights since Obama took over, and it seems this whole country is against the disabled that provide the freedom they live under.I fell like I'm living in Russia.Everyone should contact the U.S. Department of Justice and ask WHY they aren't investigating this case with the First Responder, and WHY the Justice Department won't enforce the rights of the disabled, unless they are a minority. The Justice Department really seems to hate Disabled Veterans.

Billy Kidwell Man. I hope this is NOT a Obama thing. As a Service Animal myself. Obama helped KEEP many of the changes in the ADA that came about after 911. Which was just one of the reasons the ADA was revamped. Only changes recently were regarding the TYPE of animal. And help define "SERVICE", from "THERAPY". Cause even AS a Service Animal. I'm not buying the Snakes and Rats stuff lol. My opinion is that FEDERAL LAW has to be more ENFORCABLE with State Laws. Biggest one being,.. An establishments right to Refuse Service. That is their Right. BUT NOT IF IT'S BECAUSE OF A DISABILITY. OR SERVICE ANIMALS. And they pull that All the time. Then it's Discrimination. Only suggestions I have. Is always carry a Body Camera. A lot of people do not want to know the truth. The truth is that usually it is your best friend that stabs you in the back. I sought help from the justice department for 8 years during Obama. They wouldn't even answer my letters or complaints. I discovered that the United States Commission on Civil Rights investigated and found that Obama's Justice Department was engaged in Racial Discrimination and would not investigate, or enforce civil rights violations, against light skinned people, and this discrimination was also used against Disabled Veterans. See www.usccr.gov/NBPH/USCCR_NBPP_report.pdf Justice Department Attorneys quit because of the hate and discrimination by the Obama administration read Injustice written by J. I gave up on that route some time ago. Because even going there in person, I was questioned on my Service Animal. So you KNOW That's going nowhere. That's why I wish States would get involved more. It’s very hard to witness so much ignorance like this. It’s not ok to have to apologize. It’s not ok at this day and age to be so ignorant to ANYONE that’s already struggling. It’s not hard to just either ask someone what you may not understand, and in times when many disabled people cannot answer because their physical and/or mental disability prevents them from being able to, then it’s not hard to do a little research online or try asking others. Or just be polite and kind. It’s that simple. The ignorance seriously needs to stop because there’s absolutely no excuse to be nasty to disabled people or anyone ever, especially a business. I hope he writes a review of both places. If I read something like this in a review, I would be sure to never go there and I’d pass it onto friends and family.

Service dogs don't have to wear a vest. Many service dogs don't wear vest because they r useless for them. Vests r not the only gear that exists. And it doesn't matter if it is wearing a vest or not, u should never distract a working service dog. And honestly service dog or not u should never touch a dog without the owner's permission. Also many service dog teams don't really like getting stopped all the time and questioned about their service dog. Many if they use gear will have patches on them that say no questions please, please stay back, please give space, etc... It is actually best to just ignore the service dog, give them space, and let them go about their day in peace.

I really think the ADA needs to produce an informative documentary designed specifically to teach people in the service industry about service dogs, using footage of volunteer participants working with their dogs, being helped by their dogs, explaining the task-specific training of the dogs, the variety of disabilities that warrant having such a dog; & then a narrator explaining in clear language a 6th grader could understand the FEDERAL LAWS protecting the rights of disabled persons with service dogs, the ADA RULES that govern how service providers are legally permitted to interact with people with service dogs, & the list of LEGAL PENALTIES businesses will face if found guilty of violating the civil rights of people with service dogs! I'm surprised such a film doesn't already exist, & isn't required viewing for people who've discriminated on the basis of the dog.
