The 77th Infantry Division. Roughly 560 soldiers went into the Argonne Forest, still defended by German soldiers under command of the Crown prince of Germany Wilhelm , Max Von Gallwitz and Albrecht the duke of Würtemberg. They were in the middle of the advance, where their left was supported by French units and their right by the American 92nd. As communication was not an easy feat they did not know, while they were advancing, the French and the 92nd were stalled and pushed back by German forces. This is how they got encircled. For 6 days they were encircled, until they got relieved. In the end 194 of the 560 soldiers returned. I'm certain these soldiers had undergone unimaginable hardships. I'm not 100% certain, I'll look it up later and edit if needed, but the commanding officer of this 77th Division committed suicide 3 years later. I can't imagine what goes trough someone's mind that survived such hell. Sorry for the rambling! =)

This is one of my favorite Sabaton songs, probably because its the title to one of my favorite movies "the Lost Battalion" (to my knowledge only available on the Military Channel). Much of this video uses excerpts from that movie. The quick shot at 6:42 of your video shows one of the best pieces of dialogue in the whole movie. (The German commander talking with one of the prisoners) - Seriously, if you get a chance, watch that movie!

They sent multiple runners to get msgs out but the runners where either shot or captured by the germans so they used pigeons which most of them where shot out the sky but they managed to get a msg out telling the guys who where using the artillery to stop firing on them it was friendly fire

Vince, you should know that the "Liberty Division" was comprised of almost ALL New Yorkers, hence the name Liberty Division! There is even a beautiful memorial for them in Central Park in NYC.

Such a curiosity. Much of the video comes from the movie - The Lost Battalion (2001 film). October 1918. World War I is coming to an end. The US 308th Battalion, led by Major Whittlesey, is tasked with taking Argonne Forest "at all costs" to break the German defense there. Two other battalions are also to start the fight: the American and the French, which are to protect the attack on the sides - these, however, are repulsed, and contact with the 308th battalion is severed. In this situation, Major Whittlesey cannot be ordered to withdraw. Convinced of the presence of the other two battalions, the 308th continues its attack on the Germans - and is soon surrounded by them, as reported by the command using their carrier pigeons. The battalion maintains the position it won, with heavy losses it repels enemy attacks. At some point, he is also attacked by his own artillery, which incorrectly determined the location of the battalion.

The US involvement in WWI was very interesting-- the German forces never encountered Americans before and were completely taken aback as to the willfulness and tenacity of the US troops. One German commander was quoted as saying "I don't understand these Americans; they do not surrender when they are supposed to!"

It's pictured pretty well in this video. The lost battalion didn't just take small arms fire in regards of blue on blue. They were shelled for days by their own.
