Part of the reason Yevdokia Rachkevich went searching for all the crash sites was that if a soldier was listed as "missing in action", the family wouldn't receive their benefits. With each crash site she found the soldiers could then be listed as "killed in action" and the family would receive and money and additional benefits they deserved.

The all women regiments were the created after Major Marina Raskova convinced Stalin they could aid the war. Three regiments were created, the 586th Fighter Aviation Regiment, the 587th Bomber Aviation Regiment and the 588th Night Bomber Regiment. Although all were intended to be all female, the 586th and 587th soon became mixed gender due to a shortage of qualified women. The 587th and 588th were renamed Guards Regiments during the war to recognize their contribution and success. Guards units are considered elite units. Raskova was killed in a crash in 1943 while serving as the commander of the 587th.

In 1981, the movie "Night Witches in the Sky" was released in the Soviet Union (IMDb ID 0232882). Just about the hero girls who fought against the German Nazis in the 46th Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment (ex. 588th Night Light Bomber Aviation Regiment). Many women participated in the Great Patriotic War. Medics, snipers, bomber pilots, fighter pilots, anti-aircraft gunners. And how many women mastered men's professions and worked in the rear, helping the front! Films have been made about many of them, books have been written, and museums have been created. We remember and honor our heroic ancestors.

Don't forget the woman who, upon having lost her husband who was a T-34 tank commander, sold her property, and with the monetary award from the Soviet government, bought a T-34 tank. She then went to a training unit, spent 2 months to learn how to operate and command the tank, and then sought out her husband's old tank crew. She then commanded that tank until the end of the war.

@YoursTrulyAudrey Thank you very much. I will look it up. Unlike when I went to school I am interested in the history of our world wars. The way Sabaton tells the story before the song is really cool to me plus the little facts they give really get my attention. The one from No Bullets Fly actually brought tears to my eyes. My older brothers were bothin the military. One was in the army during the Korean War and was sent to the DMZ in Korea. He was a gunner on a tank. Never saw any action but there was always a threat. My other brother was in the navy and was a loader for the big shells guns on the USS LOS ANGELES. This was just after the war with Japan. I was brought up during the Vietnam War. I enlisted to go into the army but was denied because of health issues. I have much respect for our military men and women and veterans who gave limbs and lives to fight for our country. I salute them all.

Soviet citizens affectionately called them "maize dusters", and the Germans mockingly called them "Russian plywood". The U-2s were so defenseless that they could be killed even by small arms fire. That is why it was decided to use them only in night flights, hoping that under the cover of night they would be able to hide from enemies.
@damienmaynard88925 ай бұрын
thanks for this! thought you would like it! Related to the Night Witches - Lidiya Litvyak was a Russian fighter pilot, all female 586th fighter regiment. She shot down a German fighter ace near her base, surviving the crash he did not believe she ( being TOO PRETTY!) had shot him down until she told him exactly how the fight had gone! She was denied the Hero of the Soviet Union medal because she was shot down but not found (maybe) until 1991. Learned to fly at 14, flew solo at 15, by the time she was shot down ( in a four-to-one fight at low level and fog/clouds! - she may have even got three of them before they got her!) Lidiya had between 11 and 14 kills and had taught more than 50 other people to fly. ..... the Night Witches planes, the Po-2, was so useful that it was never fully replaced in civilian service until the 1990's by helicopters! In total, 261 people served in the regiment, of whom 32 died of various causes during the war including plane crashes, combat deaths and tuberculosis. Twenty-eight aircraft were written off. Twenty-three personnel from the regiment were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, two were awarded Hero of the Russian Federation, and one was awarded Hero of Kazakhstan.

The interrogations in the Gestapo lasted two months. Almost daily, or even several times a day, she was called in for questioning, trying to find out about her connection with the partisans. The stubborn 14-year-old girl was silent. Adults were amazed at her courage. Galya Komleva did not betray anyone. Two months after her arrest, the fascists realized that they could not break the girl. On February 20, 1943, Galya Komleva and other prisoners were taken to the village of Vasilkovichi, where they were shot.Posthumously, the young liaison Galya Komleva was awarded the Order of the Great Patriotic War, 1st degree. The Night Witches fought throughout the entire war. Their final aerodrome was located less than 40 miles from Berlin. The 588th also stayed entirely female with one exception - a man worked with them for a few days - until a supply unit sent him some panties. he couldn't take it, and transferred out immediately. The Night Witches put great effort into maintaining their femininity - they used grease pencils for makeup. BTW, I'm working on a screenplay about the Night Witches, so hopefully you will see a film about them one day. The name "Night Witches" was a derogatory term used by the Germans, but the women embraced the name and took it for themselves. On another note, the women who went searching for women after the war did it for reasons besides love for her girls. At the time of the war, any Soviet military person who could not be found was considered a traitor to the USSR. She wanted to ensure her girls got the respect due to them.

The white lily. German pilot non-commissioned officer Erwin Mayer was captured near Stalingrad on September 13, 1942. He was an experienced pilot: he had 11 downed Soviet planes on his account, but he himself was defeated. His Messerschmitt was shot down by a Yak-1 aircraft, the pilot of which was distinguished by high combat skills. Mayer himself managed to jump out with a parachute and already on the ground he was accepted by the strong hands of the Red Army. During the interrogation, Erwin Mayer asked to look at the pilot who shot him down, but he did not like what he saw. The German ace could not believe for a long time that he was hit by a woman. At first, he thought he was just being bullied. But the girl gestured at the elements of combat known only to the two of them. And then, according to one version, the German took off his watch and presented it to his winner, and according to another, tore off his Knight's Cross and threw it at her feet.

. Pilot Ekaterina Zelenko, the only woman who participated in the Soviet-Finnish War and committed an air ram during the Great Patriotic War, fought as part of the 135 short-range bombing regiment. Few people know about the feat of Alexandra Polyakova, the only woman who decided on a fiery ram. On September 12, 1941, she flew two reconnaissance sorties on a Su-2 aircraft. Despite the fact that her plane was damaged during the second flight, she flew on a mission for the third time on the same day. On the way back near the city of Romny, two Soviet aircraft were attacked by seven German Me-109s. The second Soviet aircraft was shot down and was forced to withdraw from the battle. Zelenko was able to shoot down one plane, and when she ran out of ammunition, she rammed a second German plane. Thus, she destroyed him, but at the same time she died herself. Ekaterina Zelenko received the Order of the Red Banner during her lifetime for her participation in the Soviet-Finnish War. She also participated in the military tests of the Su-2. She was on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War from the first day. She fought as part of the 135 BBAP, was the deputy commander of the squadron. She flew 40 combat missions and conducted 12 aerial battles. A minor planet of the Solar System is named after her. and these are not all pilots... not counting other types of vocs

Oktyabrskaya Maria Vasilyevna used her own funds to pay for the construction of the T-34 "Combat Friend" tank. After that, she sent a letter to the Kremlin asking to be sent to the front. Stalin personally approved of her initiative. Thus, Oktyabrskaya became a tank driver. She was mortally wounded in battle in 1944 and posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. You can write about the female heroes of that war until morning. In the West, very little is known about the war on the territory of the USSR and the battles of the Red army . In the USSR, women received equal rights with men in 1917.

I know I'm late to this video, but cutting off their engines to bomb the engines. Just to restart their engines midflight is an incredible feat as it is. And to do it during a bombing raid, it deserves all the respect it deserves!
