I have many horror stories on my own with my pets but want to share something that happened to my mother. She continued to use a vet that I had stopped using over twenty-years ago. The whole town goes there; it's like walking into the Mayo Clinic for dogs. Being a long-time customer and now about 80 years old made my mother an easy mark. Every single visit was hundreds of dollars. The last time she was there, they told her that her little dog, a Maltese who was about fifteen years old at the time, needed to be referred to a veterinary oral surgeon. All of her teeth needed to be removed. It was a critical situation. They handed her the bill for the visit in the hundreds of dollars and the referral. Apparently, referrals to specialist have become a specialty with this vet. I know others who were given the same advice for different specialists. My mother was beside herself worried about putting her little dog under anesthesia at fifteen-years of age, but about to make the appointment because she "trusted" them. I didn't having had one too many bad experiences there. I told her we needed to get a second opinion and took her to my vet. They did an exam on her dog and said that all of her teeth were solidly placed and that she could benefit by a teeth cleaning - however - because of her age they did not consider it to be a critical situation and that my mother would need to weigh the risk of the anesthesia with the benefit of the procedure. They gave her some ideas of things that she could do for plaque. Much relieved, my mother chose the other options and now, three years later, her dog is still doing great, eating fine, with all of her teeth and finally, my mother has started to use my vet.

Wow! Sounds like that vet may have been getting kickbacks from the specialists. It's truly sickening what people will do because of greed. I'm glad your mom listened to you and her dog didn't have to go through all of that pain (or worse), not to mention the money she saved!

I also have had a few negative experiences with vets. They seem to be doing the hard sell for the prescription foods, while scoffing at me for saying my dogs are on a raw diet. It’s absolutely disgusting. I have as much faith in the veterinary field as I do in my own doctor, and that’s very little! Thank you, Doc Jones for these great videos!❤

I reside in Quebec, over the past 2 years, I brought my pet to the vet 3 times for an eye infection. They charged me $70.00 to examine my dog, to end up telling me that she is fine which is false, since she is always scratching her eyes, and has lots of rheum that I must wash daily. 3 months my Roxy catched a cold, the vet asked me to make an appointment for an X-ray and a blood test, that will cost me $500.00 Can Dol. Her other vet told me Roxy needed the extraction of all her teeth, which cost $900.00 Can Dol. I asked her why all of them, if most were fine...She answered "we shall see"...I went to the other vet and was informed that they will charge me $1,000 so I treated my 10 years old Lhasa Apso with Colloidal Silver. Bunch of crooks!!! Thank you so much, for your teachings. GOD Bless you.

We took our young, male cat to a vet (other than one where we usually go) for a second opinion. She calls herself an integrative vet.....so we had high hopes she wouldn't be in favor of the usual procedures. She really wanted to administer steroids to our cat. We stood firm against it. She recommended we put our dog & 3 cats on Revolution + monthly for their entire lives to prevent fleas. THAT does not sound like a vet who is integrative ! There's no way we'd put that stuff on our animals every single month, year after year !!! The vet says it's safe. SAFE?! Shaking my head. We sure won't be going back to her. Our regular vet is now insisting all animals have vaccinations & if they don't, they won't be seen. Even our strictly indoor cats are to have a rabies shot. The vet said she takes rabies seriously & she's heard of bats getting into a house & causing rabies in indoor cats. Rolling eyes back in head. What's a person supposed to do???????? We don't believe in having our cats vaccinated after their initial ones. So.....it sounds like if you call to have a pet seen for a problem, if they aren't up-to-date on vaccinations, the vet won't see them. I have a MAJOR problem w/that !!!!!!!!!!!

Where I live, it is illegal not to have our pets vaccinated annually. So, we have to over vaccinate unless we want a fine. I just had a vet refuse to vaccinate my dog because of his anxiety, and now I have anxiety over getting busted by animal control.

I have never seen an enlarged lymph node from an ACL rupture Pleeeze. 🙄 Your right about checking the foot obviously but if you don’t check the lymph node, you just missed an early stage 3 lymphoma which came be CURED. And **obviously ** the most common things are going to be the most common findings - but it doesn’t mean they should not be appropriately addressed. If you don’t monitor for kidney disease or gall bladder disease and a myriad of other things then by the time you find it, it is glaringly obvious and it’s too late to help your pet - so yeah common, but the diagnosis was missed till it was too late to manage or even cure the issue. Too bad, so sad. But hey, doc, you’re a really nice guy.

No - indoor cats do need vaccines if they do not come in contact with indoor/outdoor cats. They should get vaccines for all the vaccines till 2 years of age bc they are more susceptible to leukemia till then plus young cats sometime just decide to take a run for it - so they need to be protected. Rabies is controversial- indoor cats shouldn’t need them but if you live in an Rea where there are bats they can get exposed if it comes in your house. This is conversation to be had with your vet. In our area, a few years ago some 20 +people needs rabies prophylaxis (which is pretty terrible to go through plus you still might die ) bc they were exposed to a young unvaccinated kitten (but yes, indoors) - so that is to be made with some thought. But they should get all vaccines till 2 years of age.

I've had many dogs in the past years. I fed them canned dog food, many brands and dry kibble. They all got cancer and died earlier than normal age for their breed. Later in my wiser years I started feed homemade food and those dogs died of old age. No cancer. My present dog eats what we eat, steak, chicken and pork with some veggies. She's only five years and is quite healthy. I agree with you on this holistic approach to dog feeding. Thanks for your insight. Love your channel.

THANK YOU for making this video, and your honesty! My daughter just left her veterinary work, tired of seeing (mostly) dogs placed on ridiculous drugs specifically humans, anti depressants, anti anxiety, and thyroid meds etc... She said the number of dogs with cancer and other strange diseases is insane. My husband and I have vaccinated our dogs 2 times in 8 years, they are incredibly healthy. Flea tabs once, the reaction was not a good one. We use Diamond Natural food and organic eggs and meat/poultry. What an amazing video !!!

My dog has a rabies Vax exemption. He has many health issues immune related. A holistic vet was able to do that for us. Sometimes he can't board or day play with a waiver some places he can that's the only drawback. However I was shocked how some vets even tried to sneak in shooting him up without my permission. One vet even lied to me about the consequences if he bit someone (thanks Google.) They're so brainwashed in vet school these days in what's needed for a healthy dog and they really shove it down your throat. Thank you for your video!

You're so right about the boarding issue. I only board mine at a nursing hotel that is staffed 24 hrs/day and pets are closely watched and cared for. The drawback for this very expensive boarding is that they will only accept pets that are fully vaccinated. Ugh!

I wish I could find a vet like you. I have had vets almost get upset with me because I focus on healthy food, will not vaccinate for everything yearly and am very proactive about my animal's health. I rescue dogs, currently have 10. One I just adopted was vomiting every day. She was diagnosed with early stage liver failure - at less than 2 years of age. The vet recommended Science diet and Denamarin. I told the vet I will not feed Science diet instead I am giving her very small amounts of real, highly nutritious food - like all of my other dogs eat. The dog is doing much better, no vomiting for almost 3 weeks and she is gaining weight. The same vet gets upset with me because I refuse to vaccinate every year for everything. When they spay an animal the cost includes vaccines. I personally do not think it is a good idea to load them up with a multi-valent vaccine at the same time they are going through the stress of surgery. They just say I gave to pay for the vaccines even if I don't get them since it is included with the cost. Vaccines are useful only when used correctly. I feel like it's always a battle when I need veterinary help for my animals, which is rare because of the way I care for them. I like the vets I have used for years but there is always a bit of tension when I go there. I live in a rural area so there are not a lot of choices. I have been to one vet I really liked but he is another hour drive away.

We had to resort to a collar, too, but we use the ones with the pesticide that's been around for a long time... I think it's pyrithrin. We tried the "drops on the back" type and our dog got very giddy and wouldn't listen... same thing happened to her brother whom we had first, only we didn't realize it at the time. After putting that stuff on him, the next day he ran right down the driveway into the path of a car and died. Never did anything like that before. He completely ignored my husband's command for him to come to him because that crap was messing with his nervous system. =( Have you heard of Tick Tubes? We're thinking about trying those. I've heard good things about them, but they are expensive, although there are homemade versions as well.

I'm so thankful for what your sharing, Dr Jones. I do very few vaccinations for my animals and least of all for my indoor cats. I make a lot of the dog's food and trying to get the cats on board with home made food. I agree with less kibble for certain and also less insecticides for flea control. I have a vet who leans more toward natural treatments and she comes here to my home for my dog with mobility issues and eventually when money is there she'll exam the other animals as needed too. Another dog with collapsed trachea I use treatments you've suggested and she only goes to the vet for her nail trims since the one she goes to works with her and her fears. She wasn't afraid until we went to a vet that forced her on her side for an ex-ray and sedated her to get it done. Lessons learned. As always such good information and your my go to when the animals have issues and I seek out your videos to find answers.

Thank you so much for this video! Tons of people are dropping their animals in shelters or leaving them to fend for themselves outside (as per recent CBC coverage) because the costs to keep them are so high since the lockdowns...the rescues are beyond capacity...and I realize most likely don't want to give up their animals ...if everyone considering this watched your video likely many would be able to keep them. It still costs to have animals (or people!) in one's life but the costs can be reduced tremendously by following this advice. (Though let's remember to adopt not shop for dogs and cats and we can still consider the breed. :) ) Thanks so much for your honest advice!

Our pupster had his initial vaccines as a puppy. We did not want to give anymore as he had been extraordinarily healthy. Our dog sitter insisted on having them updated. When we went I asked the vet if we could have a blood test to see if he still had a T cell response? She acted like that was ridiculous. Then I asked about the dosage. They give the same dose to a St. Bernard they give to a poodle!!!??? How does that make any sense? He had his first seizure a couple of days ago and 2 more rather quickly after. I am now cooking for him meat from the butcher with veggies and a vitamin supplement. So far so good. Fingers crossed we get him back on track. Oh yes, started him on CBD and looking for MCT oil. These are great straightforward advices. It helps to know that some of the conventional beliefs we fur parents have had over time are really causing more harm than good towards our fur babies. Thank you so much for this, doctor. I liked this video and I subscribed to your channel. God bless you!

I am very grateful for these videos. My 12 year old spayed dog has had a rough year, with a couple of UTIs and pancreatitis in December which I'm blaming on royal canin urinary kibble she was on. I've now given up on any vet food since it's mostly grain. She's been on antibiotics 5 times on the last year alone which I'm sure doesn't help her recurring UTIs. I've started giving her yogurt and I'll try the green tea with honey mix you mentioned in another video. Sadly most vets seem equipped to just sell vet food. She did a full blood panel (+ thyroid) in March and 3 weeks later I brought her to another vet for a second opinion. They wanted to draw new panels again when these results were just 3 weeks old! She gets very frantic and stressed at vets so I refused to have her poked and proded again they had me sign a disclaimer, as if I was actually harming her in any way by refusing to stress her any further. I'll also start her on new natural supplements with d mannose. She already takes one for her usmi in lieu of Proin. I had to do my own research for that one when I read on Proin side effects.

I so Love you! The way Tula looks at you makes my mascara run. Had 3 cats. Lost 1 last year at 18. Other 2 at 17 and 20. Homemade raw, no vx, no insecticides, very careful with chemicals in the house. One kitty dx w "kidney failure" 3.5 years ago. Still going strong with bun/creat within close to normal range, a great decrease. AND I do a homemade raw diet... None of the Hills Diet BS. Plus a number of supplements. Bun from 61 to 40, Creat from 4.3 to 2.2... K and Phos within normal range. And kitty just turned 20. Really believe that early detection is key. So there is value in doing lab work and also observation. Is kitty or puppy drinking and peeing more? 🤗🤗 To all.

I do all 7 mentioned, fully holistic, fully home cooked meals and my boy still got cushings, went blind and losing his hearing. I'm so frustrated and heartbroken. All my dogs before this one I fed kibble and went with all vet recommendations and both lived to be 1, age 18, 2 dog 20. My boy I have now is only 14 and so unhealthy. I feel guilty but I thought I was doing better with him.

What about spaying/neutering? Did you have it done when he was young? I learned a lot from a website called HealthyandHappyDog. It's run by a lady who is a dentist and she adopted this dog that ended up having all kinds of problems... I think one of them was either Cushings or Addisons disease. I believe he was diabetic and had alopecia as well... it's been a long time since I read it. Anyway, she did a ton of research (and she references the studys so you can read them) and learned that his problems most likely stemmed from him getting fixed at the shelter he was in at a very early age. It made a lot of sense to me. When the sex organs are removed in an animal when they're so young, their bones aren't fully grown yet so more prone to skeletal problems, and their adrenal glands have to work overtime to do the job that the sex organs would have done, leading to adrenal fatigue. Around 6 years old is usually when problems start surfacing and fixed dogs are much more likely to get cancer (my dog has had 2 types of cancer... I regrettably got her spayed at 6 months... if I had only known). We wouldn't remove the sex organs of the equivalent aged child, so why are we doing this damage to our pets? She suggests we go to vets that will perform vasectomies on males, and tubal ligations or just uterus removal and leave the ovaries on females. It's a very interesting website. She is also great at answering emails if you have questions. Sometimes, you know, it's just gene related, just like people... it can be the luck of the draw, or a breed issue. You didn't mention if they were all the same breed. It sounds like he's really well cared for and loved, that's for sure... hang in there.

Here's what I do, as a person on a budget. My senior dog eats a mid grade can, my younger dog gets the best kibble I can afford (which I let soak in water before he eats) we supplement with pumkin/carrots/blue berries/eggs/and sometimes a bit of the meat from our dinners. We skip vaccines because they never run free and I didn't socialize them (fail) but they're never around other pets. Flea treatment only from July until the first frost I live in the country and natural treatment wasn't cutting it. They also get a mushroom supplement, a pre/probiotic. Still a lot, but my dogs are healthy as can be

I am a lifelong animal lover. My top priority is making sure my 4 year old tiny shih tzu (7.5 lbs) is fed the very best food and treats. I am with you all the way regarding what she ingests. I have horror stories of family pets who passed at relatively young ages and I am convinced mistakes were made concerning their diet. etc. I am determined to provide her with the best possible advantages to ensure a long and healthy life....I could continue on and on with my observations and opinions but I fear I would be writing all through the night ...I will say she is the most loving little sweetheart in all the world and I am as crazy about her as she is about me! and you hear this all the time, I am certain. In closing FYI we had a purebred beagle when the children were small as 'they make great family pets'....children left home and at 17 years of age we had our family pet put to sleep due to old age....but....he ate what we ate, wore flea collar p.r.n., and had a good long life .....I am so glad I discovered your You Tube videos and am very much looking forward to reading your book now that you have read excerpts from mine.....thank you so very much for sharing your expertise ....Proud pet mom from N.S.

I go to my vet with my whole list of suggestions and how I want something treated. I recently asked the vet in regards to our two-year-old getting spayed. If they offered a partial spay option, she just looked at me like a deer in the headlights. She was clueless and only simply said no 🤔 are saying two-year-old has had a hot spot which we went to the vet to be treated two times. She just had a third one occur. Not going to the vet again. Treating him myself through the doctors. Suggestions on these videos and it's clearing up

In your opinion, what should we be giving a dog who is chronically scratching? Or rather, what should we try first? We've done the body comb, essential oils, oatmeal shampoo, allergy shots, etc. The shot helps but doesn't last very long.

Dr. Jones posted this video on that subject not long ago. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4mulKV3gdytjc0 Our Honey has a grass allergy and used to scratch a lot, and apart from a healthy diet, some of the things that have helped her most are quercetin with bromelain (AKA Nature's Benadryl), 4 mg astaxanthin, and DMG, an amino acid that helps with all sorts of allergy symptoms. She weighs about 50 lbs, and I give her one capsule of each every night in a little ball of cheese. There are formulas labeled for pets, but I take those supplements myself, and the capsules meant for humans work the same for both of us and cost a lot less. Honey just gets a smaller dose. If Honey does start scratching, I grab a spray bottle of hypochlorous acid (HOCl), spray her well, and the scratching stops. I also use HOCl to rinse off her feet when she comes indoors, because they bring allergens in on their paws, then scratch and spread the allergen all over themselves. Every home with animals needs HOCl. It kills bacteria, fungi and viruses faster and better than bleach does, heals wounds, and is antipruritic, too-but it's so safe that the FDA has approved it as eye drops. You can go to Amazon and pick up a whole gallon for about $25, and for less than the cost of a vet visit, you can even buy a generator and make it at home.

Try checking for allergies. My first thought Is to cut out grain, potatoes and carbs in general unless it's a vegetable. Fruits are okay but in appropriate amounts. Pair carbs with fibre. Do this for a month and a half to see if it improves.

Cost tip: I buy family packs of chicken thighs and 80% hamburger, liver. Big diff in price per lbs w large packs. Wrap individual thighs in waxed paper and freeze . Separate hamburger patties w paper between. Microwave defrost 2 or 3 at a time. It's just the two of us, I'm not a 'foodie' so it's real simple & fast just to cook some meat and a sweet potato, rice or broccoli. Small dog, finicky, we eat the same food. PS: His labs are perfect... vet was impressed, he's 11 yrs old.

This guy is excellent - what a loss to the veterinarian community in Canada - Come visit us in Australia - the majority of our vets are going down the same sorry path - it has become more about the money than the animal - over vaccinating - over testing and over use of drugs - always the easy, quickest and most expensive answer. And I am really fed up with young vets who refer to any foods that are not dog biscuits or tin food as “human food”, what are Universities teaching them?
