We dealt with tear stains with our Boston Terrier for a couple of years and tried everything we could find with no luck. A trainer we took him to recommended we put a handful (we put 7-10) fresh blueberries in each of his feedings as she'd seen that work for a lot of pet owners. This worked like a champ. Been almost a year now and his face looks nice and clean, no rusty stains down his cheeks any longer. Try it, hope it helps you too!

I give our Corgis a handful of organic blueberries every morning in their breakfast. Have done this for a couple years. I have noticed no change in Ruby's tear staining. 😞😞 But it's good for their health!

My dog had the same, being a Maltese they are notorious for this staining. She got really sick in January 2020, as a result our vet had her on a strict diet of boiled chicken and rice. I noticed her tear staining disappeared - totally disappeared. Hmmmm. When she was better and able to eat again I adjusted her diet slowly as recommended but didn’t put her back on commercial dog food or kibble. We are now 14 months tear-stain free and have a very bouncy, energetic and healthy dog...who loves chasing ducks. Once a week, I soak her eyes and remove a tiny bit of mucky buildup with a cotton bud or fine comb, and thats it.

Hi there, I have a little 4lb Morkie, her name is Charlee & she'll be 3yrs old on 🍀St. Patrick's Day 💚 and She has awful tear duct stains (she has had them for most of her life. I can't recall when it started). I've trimmed the hair around her eyes & even had to cut away the the hair where it keeps building up with a crusty tear stains. (it would have taken so long to try & wipe it away & I wasn't going to put her through that). I've spoken to my vet's office & they just tell me "it's normal." & I think to myself "there's gotta be something I can do for my little dog!" & then I found your video! I really think now, that she may very well have blocked tear ducts (or they are "over-active?" because when I was cleaning her eyes tonight I seen this liquid stuff just dripping out like crazy... What does that mean?) Will the Camomile Tea bag help my Charlee? Also, I've always known about giving Coconut oil to dogs, being great stuff (& boy does she ever love licking it off my hands!) however, you stated to give 1/4 of a tsp. to a 10lb dog, but my question is (because I stink at math!) how much is the right amount to give my 4lb Morkie, Daily? (like, in her food). Thank you for your time in reading this & thank you for your amazing videos, they really help a lot of people everywhere!! God bless you sir!! 🙏🏻🙌🏻😇❤️

I am going to try the tea, then the coconut oil on my precious Bichon. Shortly after I adopted her, I was told by the adoption group that their vet recommended amputating her tail because she was mauling a hot spot almost down to the bone. I used your tea/aspirin infusion on the tail, hips and toes...it worked within a week.. Three years later, no problems...except now we have developed eye and mouth stains. I do scissor the hair 2x a month to prevent irritation. BTW, the peroxide/baking soda mix recommended on another channel did NOT work.

@@suziepeck5717 I forgot all about her tear stains. I have two frenchies, one is brindle and he has chicken allergies. I switched his food to raw rabbit by a non commercial brand “Primal.” I switched her too, not because of allergies; but, because they share the same water bowl. They both eat raw- rabbit, or duck, or lamb. During that switch to raw rabbit, her tear stains went away…so she could’ve had a different allergy that was in her food. she is fawn coat so tear stains are very easy to see. Once the tear stains left, they have never returned. “Primal” comes frozen, and we buy it from a nearby dog boutique kind of store. I take it out of the freezer 20 minutes before they eat, then chop up the patties for them. They love it. It’s single source protein, and grain-free. Sorry for your pup. I hope they go away. I hope I helped🙏🏻🤍

There is tissue under her eyelids that is slighly exposed, looks like a type of oral soft tissue and doesn't appear to be infected in any way. I have persians that tear. I use the cotton pad and warm water technique for them. It's important to pat the eye area dry with a tissue after cleaning to keep moisture to a minimum and it helps keep bacteria growth down. I can certainly vouch for the coconut oil remedy for dogs! My own holistic vet recommends this for tear stains for his canine patients. Like Dr. Andrew says, it provides more of a protective barrier against the tears and at the same time it's antibacterial. Of course, a basic eye exam is always a very good idea to start with to rule out any problematic eye issues or infections. You need to know what you're dealing with when it comes to eyes, I speak from experience. Great video Dr. Andrew!!! 😊❤🐈🐕

@akiyiakelly I was checking into the product "angel eyes" about a year or 2 ago (on Amazon, in the comments I was reading what people were saying about it) & apparently years prior the product use to work great however at some point the company took some major important ingredient out (which was the ingredient that worked to remove tear stains) & since then they still sell the product, and people "think" it works, because "it's suppose to work" right?! (the placebo affect!). Please stay away from it, don't waste your money on that product! In fact, I wouldn't waste money on any of those products. There's one sold at my vets office, I looked it up on Amazon & it had very poor reviews & results! So that in and of itself should be a great indicator that none of those things work! I would definitely try the remedies here DR. Jones is showing us! 😊❤️

My miniature schnauzer has them bad. I'll try feeding him some coconut oil and massaging his tear ducts. What if I use my warm tea bag from the morning to massage? Also, I read to use a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in the water dish to increase acidity to help fight bacteria. The only downside is that this is acidic and might be harmful to the teeth.

Is there any connection between this tear duct condition and over-vaccination? We have three dogs, all the same breed (Kuvasz). Our first got her DAPP shot at 8 weeks, then at 16 weeks I brought her for a second shot... I trusted the vet to only give what she needed, but the shot they gave her had FIVE antigens in it! Athena hasn't been the same since, severe skin allergies for two years (she was grooming herself naked, and I both tested and treated for mites, saw none and got no improvement from the neem oil rubs), raw elbows still to this day, and constant runny eyes! She is now 5.5 years old. Our second puppy received only a single for parvo at 8 weeks, and I never gave her any more. While titer tests show she has no antibodies to any of the "big 3", she has been the healthiest of all three dogs with no issues, ever, whatsoever, so I don't have a doubt in my mind that if she were to fall ill with distemper or what have you, that she would get through such illness just fine. She is 5. Our third got a DAPP shot at 8 weeks, but based on our experience with the two ladies - and the considerable differences between them regarding overall condition - I had him titered at 14 weeks. He had antibodies to both distemper and adenovirus, so I allowed the vet to administer a single for parvo. He has the elbow thing like Athena (our eldest), but not nearly as bad, but is otherwise in excellent shape and health. He is only 2 years old. The only one with the goopy eyes is Athena, our eldest. The other two have clean eyes and faces, although the Monkey (2-year-old, fully vaccinated but not over-vaxxed) does get eye boogers, but they're super minor.

@@mislimislimisli3331 Food is not the issue, since all three eat exactly the same thing. They get raw whole prey that I raise myself (mostly pastured chicken, but I plan to raise sheep for them starting next year) or high-end kibble (80% meat or better) with raw eggs.

@@VeterinarySecrets Thank you. That was helpful. I'll ask our regular vet to pay extra attention to her eyes when we go in for her next checkup. After watching the 2016 video I don't think she has tear staining. She has seasonal allergies and I'm thinking that's the cause.... in the winter, when she's not scratching, she doesn't have the eye goop (at least not as much). I'm going to try the calendula/aloe and warm compresses though just to help remove the eye goop. She already gets yogurt and probiotics daily as well as Milk Thistle after I have to give her heartworm medicine (I give it as infrequently as I can but since we're in the south of America, I feel I have to give it some). I doubt you did but I wouldn't put any stock in anyone who called you an idiot. Those of us who follow you, know that you're not an idiot and more importantly I believe you know that you're not an idiot. 💜

Have you heard or tried vinegar to remove tear stains?
@feedwinnie
@feedwinnie 4 жыл бұрын
@ Ruben Rubinos No, never. The only "acid" I've ever heard of being used optically, near or in the eye, is boric acid in a sterile solution with saline. I've had persians for 39 years and I can tell you that I've pretty much heard it all. Vinegar has never been mentioned for tear stain prevention or removal of tear stains by anyone I know of, including breeders and veterinarians. You might try non-alcohol, non-fragrance witch hazel. We give our cats filtered water only and use a warm moist cotton pad or white wash cloth with boiled, cooled water to clean eyes. Eyes need to be wiped at least twice a day, depending upon how badly your pet tears. The longer the stain is allowed to set, the more difficult it is to get out. Always use a separate cotton pad for each eye and use each part of the pad until no stain remains. Use another pad if needed. Gently pat dry with a tissue, never rub. Patting dry is necessary to keep down bacteria growth. This is how we do it for our flat face cats. Staining in some dog breeds can normal but still can be managed. It can also be caused by yeast or allergens,dyes in foods, a bit of foreign material or a blocked tear duct which is not that uncommon and can be flushed out in the office, usually. There is another condition called entropion in which the eyelid is rolled inwards causing the eyelashes to brush against the cornea and cause not only excessive,constant tearing, but scarring of the cornea(s) and ulceration. It requires medical attention and surgery. It can be subtle with only a few very tiny lashes in the corner or the entire lid line. With our persians, it's usually because of the unusually large eye surface and placement of the tear ducts that doesn't allow for proper drainage, therefore there is pooling of the tears and they run down the corners of the eyes especially the inner eye corners, instead draining properly, or an undiagnosed entropion of some degree. This is the same for brachecephalic dog breeds as well. I don't know what breed your dog is, so I won't elaborate further and I'm not a dog expert by far, but some of these points I'm making cross over to both species where brachecephalic breeds are concerned. Some of the little terrier breeds and lots of small breeds do stain badly. I've talked to some people in my holistic vet's office who are using a tiny bit of coconut oil in the area of the corner of their dog's eyes, the fur where it stains, after cleaning, (NOT IN THE EYE)to prevent staining. I think it makes more of a barrier than an actual tear stain removal, therefore preventing stains from setting in. It takes time to see results but persistence is the key is what they tell me. There are some over the counter products that we persian cat people might use, though they are far and few between that we trust. The good ones will have boring acid and saline in them. A dog's ph of its tears and a cat's ph of it's tears are different, therefore usefully those products are species specific. There are some eye washes such as Vetericyn that can be used for both cats and dogs, but again these are under the category of eye wash, not tear stain removal. I would first take your dog to the vet and find out if there's a medical reason for excessive tearing and staining. The color of the tears can tell the vet a lot. Red, brownish tears can indicate a yeast or fungal infection and can be cleared up with a course of ointment or drops or both. With eyes, it's always best to check with your vet first. You don't want to mess around with eyes, they can go south in a matter of 24 hours. Speaking from experience here. We deal with a lot of eye issues in our part of the world. See your vet for a basic eye exam for your dog and find out the reason for the tearing. Then you'll know what you're dealing with. Hope this is helpful. Kind regards. 🐾❤🐈
