I actually had a 16 lb bichon choke on me- twice- but the first time it was on one of those drumstick shaped milkbones. I gave him the treat and he started to fight eating it and pawing his mouth. I was afraid he was going to claw his eyes. I realized he was choking, and tried to heimlich him- wasn't sure where the spot was on a dog, so I started squeezing him at the lower part of the ribs and it was not working. He started to panic, ( so did I !)and he wanted to run, I caught him, picked him up very awkwardly and unfortunately picked him up right under the ribcage and squeezed his poor belly- and what do you know???? That milk bone popped out of his mouth 3 feet away! I picked it up, and the rounded part was soft and wet which I think allowed it to slide out with that heimlich maneuver I found by accident. After this I broke those treats into 2 bites. He did it to me again several months later and I was able to find that spot again to dislodge the food- can't remember what the 2nd offending object was. He has since gone to the rainbow bridge to wait for me when it is time to reunite :) Thanks for this video.

I had a bearded collie years ago that took a block of cheese off the bench and tried to swallow it whole. As he was choking he ran under a coffee table. I pulled him out and performed said move.... he whipped his head back and bit me on the face. I got up in shock where he promptly regurgitated it and ate it again. I still have a scar to remind me lol.

This just came up as a suggested video. 4yrs late. I actually have used these techniques. My dog was eating and she was very old and tried to swallow and my partner was out with her and I just hear blood curdling screams of panic calling for me. I was told she looked struggling and just collapsed. My non veterinarian training took over and I started directing to assist and quickly swept the mouth to find a piece of chicken had caught and she couldn't get it up or down. Two long fingers acting like chopsticks pulled it out and a few puffs of air and rubbing her sternum quickly brought her around. Immediately took here toe emergency vet and they gave her clear. Never had to go to heimlich thankfully but glad to see my instincts were on and feel comfortable knowing that in an emergency with my new dog I should rely on that instinct.

Well, Dr Jones. This maneuver saved one of our pups lives! She was chewing on a leather chew bone, got excited, and it slipped down her throat. I was right there. First the trying to regurgitate, then aspirating, then panic, then she started losing consciousness. I had tried to sweep her mouth and her throat, only pushing the slimy, gooey mess further down her neck. As she was passing out I was able to pick her up (as you showed us) and let her head dangle down toward the floor. I was jumping around with this 50 pound bag of dead weight trying to get something to happen. Nothing. It's amazing how your adrenaline will kick in when you are trying to save a life. I kept on jumping up and down with her dangling, FINALLY the chew bone came out! She was so scared and so was I. But she survived and is thankful to be here. One more rescue for this little rescued dog! Thanks Dr Jones. I was able to remember your video and act on it.

My 17yo beloved large fox terrier dog died 2 days ago after choking on a small lamb bone. I knew he was choking but didn't know what to do. He walked rapidly around the lawn and his tongue was turning blue. I tried clearing his throat but he bit my hand hard. I then tried giving him a little shake and squeeze but he became unconscious. His eyes were still open and not blinking and I thought he was dead already so did nothing more. I wish I knew what I know now after watching this video. I replay the situation over and over in my head and kick myself for not doing the right thing. Sorry my buddy Zeke. I've saved you before from many things, you fell in the freezing pond, got tangled and trapped in barbed wire, fell down a hole, but not this time. I think I gave you a good life. RIP Zeke 2004-2022.

The one and only time I will ever give my dog bread. I personally don't eat bread, so when I was given some free food for Thanksgiving, it included a loaf of bread. I feed my dog real food 99 percent of the time. He is very healthy. All my dogs have lived past their lifespans with real food. So this particular day, I cooked a turkey for Thanksgiving. Taking all bones out, and cutting up the turkey into very small pieces about 1/2 inches in height, length, and width, he had a nice turkey dinner. After he ate that, a few minutes went by and I decided to give him one piece of white bread. I ripped it up into small pieces and put it in his food pan. He ate the pieces and immediately started to choke. And he couldn't breathe. He is a yellow lab. I couldn't do anything but watch, because I would not be able to get my hand in his mouth and down his throat. It took more than a minute, but he finally was able to get that bread down his throat and survive this experience. I will throw that loaf of white bread in the garbage and never give him bread again. So the information I am seeking is with regard to the following: Is there an apparatus, maybe made out of metal that can be put into a dogs mouth to keep it open so that you can get your hand and fingers down his throat without getting bit by the dog clamping down on your hand? Also, what was lodged in his throat was not a hard object, but bread which probably had a slimy texture when it got in his throat and got doughy and expanded. This would be very difficult to get out of his throat. How could you open up a breathing passage with something like this stuck in his throat. And also, I don't know how a Heimlich maneuver could dislodge doughy bread glue like this? I actually don't expect you to provide a good solution to a situation like this, if you are not able to. However, I thought I would share it to the public here to make them aware that bread is not a good thing to feed a dog. Even one piece could prevent them from breathing and has the potential to kill them. UPDATE 11/27/2020: I added this above comment to my website: www.survivaltrekker.com/ because it relates to survival emergencies. So how does this article relate to my survival website? In a survival situation, you may be baking your own bread, or you may have some emergency food in your refrigerator which includes some loaves of bread. I would suggest, under no circumstances should you feed your dog even one slice of bread. This is based on my own personal experience with what happened to my dog. The choice is up to you to make. PLEASE NOTE: Cornbread is OK. It is made a different way and is grainy, not doughy. It is more like a grainy dry cake. I always give my dog homemade cornbread without him having any problems.

I saw this last year. That saved my Jack Russell's life. He grabbed a thick pork loin. I can into the room and he was on his back. I grabbed him and did the Heimlich hard. I hit him on his back out of panic and did the Hemilch again really hard. I had him against my chest. A huge square piece shoot out! Then, I put my finger down his mouth and another junk came out! He started breathing and bit me! I think he is OK. I did not know if I should give him peroxide to make him throw up the rest of the pork. Thanks. I ended up giving him water, chicken stock, and flat ginger ale to soften the meat. A had to force it down his throat. He had a real chunky bowel movement and peed a lot all night.

I think seeing a healthy dog respond actually aids you in working out if you've cleared the obstruction. A struggling dog is probably taking in a good amount of oxygen. There is a video of some girl wondering about gormlessly videoing her dog choking. It's not fun to watch (it cuts off before anything happens/resolved), but it does show you how the dog cant make any noise except maybe a weird hitching motion, and how they paw at their face, toss their head about in a weird way, run in circles and even still wag their tail! They cant say 'Im choking' and it's silent, so you have to be attentive.

good tips, thank you, hope I never need to use them though. In one of your other videos, you said tree oil would help cure continuous ear infections, you specified only using 2% of the tree oil, but what would 2% be and in water? and how much water. Thank you. So how much tree oil, teaspoon, tablespoon to how much water or just straight tree oil? Please advise, my dog keeps getting ear infections.

Aww Pippi. Someone deserves some hotdogs slathered in peanut butter for putting up with all that!!

Very kind, although unfortunately, hotdogs can be a choking hazard for dogs & people! Too big a bite, can't swallow & may expand in the throat. Good to be cautious with hot dogs.

I was taught to put dog on side and pump , they way you're doing it is too hard for me with a big dog. You're on a table but at the park or anywhere else this method is too difficult.

Just had my dog Saving Grace come running to me choking. As I was about to grab her she stumbled and hit floor. The force of hitting floor caused it to dislodge. Thank God. (It was grass)
