"Throw in a second one if you wanna do marketing." THANK YOU. No one really truly comprehends just HOW much of a say 300M dollar blockbuster is spent on marketing. If you were to break it down it would go: Casting, CGI/VFX in general, and marketing. Those three things are what the budget is mostly comprised of. And when a movie costs 300M you need to TRIPLE that in order to make a PROFIT. When you spend 300M and only get 600M back that's barely breaking even. Breaking even in the box office is when a movie makes about double the cost of the film's budget. So when a movie cost 105M and only makes 207M at the box office that's....fine but not what you want. This is what happened with Princess and the Frog-it had a budget of 105M made 207M and thus was the final nail in the coffin for traditional animation in the western film market.
@uwirl43385 жыл бұрын
Why is getting back double what you spent just breaking even?
@acemstudio5 жыл бұрын
@@uwirl4338 Well breaking even is different for every film-double the budget isn't ALWAYS breaking even but that's what it is most of the time. When a movie breaks even, marketing costs is usually why. DreamWorks' Penguins of Madagascar cost only 132M-just barely more than Princess and the Frog but had to do a write down of 57M even with a return of 373M because of marketing costs. That alone should show how much a movie can spend on marketing. Then there's the proceeds that go to a movie theater, distributors, actors who have back end deals so the general rule of thumb is if you want your movie to make a profit, you have to triple your gross revenue on what you spent. It's why Animation is NOT a stable job-entire departments get cut if a movie bombs or even breaks even. Again Princess and the Frog broke even at the box office making 207M on a budget of 105M and while that's not BAD it wasn't what the studio wanted so cut ties with traditional animation. Rise of the Guardians cost 500 people their jobs after it made 306M on a budget of 145M. That's just over breaking even but because of marketing costs DreamWorks cut 500 from the animation department and the movie was a 83M dollar loss.

@@acemstudio I've always been interested by this. Is there a reason studios don't calculate marketing costs into the overall budget of the film? The problem with the "short system" is that it linguistically makes no sense. Billion in logical long system (most of Europe, even UK until I think about 30or so years ago) denotes million millions, trillion by the same logic is million million millions (three sets of six zeros if you will), hence centillion linguistically (cent=100) would be 100 sets of six zeros (600 zeros). I have no wish to do the math to figure out how many zeros would a centillion have in the short system which follows powers of 1000 and thus breaks the beauty of the long system. The long system however has this beautiful word milliard which is 1000 millions, hence trilliard would be 1000 trillions or thousand million million millions. Beautiful and logical.

The production of the video is just amazing. Translation all the metrics to meters for non-American viewers, the countdown of sponsored ad, the audio mixing is well-done, music is just loud enough. Thanks for all the hard work you put in those videos guys!

2:26 The problem with the Bill Gates example is the fact that his net worth is mostly in stocks. So, if he want to "withdraw" that money, he needs to sell his shares, and then stock prices will start to fall, sharply. It's impossible to calculate how much he can get mathematically, but let's say he'll be lucky if he gets 10 billion bucks out of these 100B.
@__nimitjain__ Жыл бұрын
I think you are little wrong here Microsoft is now a big well setup global company and bill gates have very very little amount of stocks of it (1-3 percent) and also he is out of his company for around years now. Microsoft can work now without his guidance like (Minecraft) and he will also not live forever .
