I can't get over how good LotR and Gollum looks after all this time. He looks so real and "physical". Even with the flaws pointed out it still doesn't break the immersion at all for me, which is... not something that usually happens. I can definitely see the first few scenes in the first movie with Gollum interacting with the other characters is a little rougher than the last one, but man knowing that they basically figured things out as they went is mindblowing haha

Watched them alla gain in cinema in 2019 and was blown away, not only how much good they still look, but even how much better they look than many modern Marvel or Disney movies. These three movies really were peak cinema.
@hettbeans
@hettbeans Жыл бұрын
@@ForboJack It's the mix of CGI and highly detailed "bigatures" that grounds it so well. Same reason Jurassic Park still looks amazing today - because they mixed cleverly staged CGI shots (e.g. the high contrast and rain) with their life-size animatronics to successfully ground the animals in the shot. Marvel movies entirely lack this magic. I've yet to see a single shot in a single Marvel film that makes me stop and ask "whoa, how'd they make that look so good?"

I watched the lotr trilogy again recently and man it's incredible how well Gollum has held up, there are definitely some rough shadows in the two towers where he looks a bit floaty, but the actual animation of the face and character is incredible
@Relyx

Yeah shadows, especially at the point of contact, and the occasional bit of sliding. Otherwise they did a fantastic job. One of the best bits of CGI of all time, especially with how well they lit him and made him look a part of the scene, rather than clearly comped in as was a common flaw at the time
@thomassowinski6765

Going along the same lines, I'd argue that much of Jurassic Park still holds up pretty well today.
@johndododoe1411

That flaw in Gollums hair was unintentional hyper-realism. Those of us with problematic hair suffer from real life bkocky hair movement. In Jurassic park, I was always most impressed at the moment the skin texture changes to the animation computer logo, as an easter egg. Also, I think the park central computer was the same brand, though I suspect they used an actor for the underpaid nerd character instead of a real life computer genius .

Considering the films were released in 01, 02 and 03 and ESPECIALLY when you consider 90% of 2023 productions cant hold a candle to them. in an odd way i havnt quite worked out yet; I think the older cameras that were used in lotr MASSIVELY helped disguise some of the work they did. the extra grainyness of the film seemed to blend things a lot more. With these new uhd super res cameraa everything has to be literally pixel perfect or it will be seen and honestly, if the hobbit series was shot in the same way i dont think any of the 'mistakes' would be any where near as noticable.

I worked on yesterday's episode of Mandalorian and I gotta say, most big shots where the volume is visible, we still had to roto it out. It helps soooo much with integration, but the levels don't quite match. Not to mention that sometimes the edge of the LED screens were visible. They just gave us the Unreal Engine renders that were used on set to replace it. Worked flawlessly.
@cjc1212

did you have to roto out the ENTIRE screen or just closer to the edges?
@aeliusdawn
@aeliusdawn Жыл бұрын
@@cjc1212 well we didn;t have to do it ourselves, it was outsourced somewhere else, but pretty much all of the fg stuff (characters and/or part of the set) was roto'd out. in those cases, the entire BG was replaced, leaving virtually no part of the LED screens visible in the shot. Either we didn't replace it at all, or we replaced it entirely.

On the topic of shots where the face is still a human performance, made me think of Spielberg's A.I Artificial Intelligence. Specifically the nanny robot, who is only briefly in the film, but I distinctly remember it being a money shot of the trailer where she runs toward the camera and looks like a human, then turns her head to reveal only the front of her head still has the fake human skin on. She was very memorable for such a minor character.

I just couldn't get over the initial stupidity of his response to the challenge. Instead of beheading the guy, the chivalrous thing to do is to just give him a slight insignificant cut. As the return would be equally (not) bad in a year's time, the rest of the story is basically not needed then. But that's a problem in the original story, and not the movie's fault. Our view of medieval mythic heroes is flawed given the way people thought back then.

A couple of suggests for a future episode...for animators react, I've been rewatching Samurai Jack. The episode I enjoy the most is episode 38 when Jack is fighting a shadow ninja. To even the fight, Jack decides to cloak himself in white and a gorgeous battle in black & white ensues. Episode 35 also has some great black & white imagery. Another thing to possible look at is a Wells Fargo commercial. In my area the commercial plays in English and Spanish. The commercials throw me off because the acting/movements are exactly the same, or so they appear, and the mouth movements for English and Spanish look accurate. I can't tell if they used CGI to get the mouth movements corrected or if the actors acted it this way. Like maybe they held the pose when speaking, recited both lines, then continued on? It's just made me think, how did they do it?

I would so much love an episode about 80s ilm shots like the iconic trench run sequence in sw with someone that actually worked on shots like these taking about the technology they used and invented like software for controlling the camera and witch hardware it ran on. Also you have talked so often about comping technology on film. But it would be really nice to actually see that done and the problems that can occur with it. Maybe you could try to do it yourself!

Alita Battle Angel was such an awesome movie. Its disgusting what Disney did to try and destroy its opening weekend, all because they wanted/needed Captain Marvel to open at #1. Still holding out hope for a sequel one day.

i couldn't make it more than 30 minutes into the movie. That 3 and a half minute shot of him just riding a horse towards camera, with nothing else happening just killed it for me. BUT seeing this makes me want to give it another try.

@@FablestoneSeries I also failed at my first attempt to watch it and stopped after 30 minutes or so. Let's say it's not an easy watch. You must be in the mood and allow yourself to sink into it. Then it's an outstanding watch.

I would love to hear more on a subject yall hit on around Alita at like 9:50. Its that uncanny valley space. Its weird, but Gollum always looked so perfect though the OG trilogy, but the hobbit and Alita both hit something uncomfortable in me. Its akin to how cable and basic tv looks too clear on a good number of HD tvs. My eyes dont see as well as those TV's present their subject. I dont know, Id like to know more on what yall think. As tech and method get more advanced, is there a point at which it out paces the viewer? Does it change the nature of the film from "filmed" to "animated"?

Gollum was perfected in the Hobbit, far superior to how he looked and moved in Lord of the Rings.

I absolutely loved that he pointed out about the green light spill. It is amazing that I have never seen anyone talk about that. it seems to me that getting a giant poster of what the background is going to look like behind your actor would be much better than a green screen. I mean most cameras have depth sensors. that should be good enough to give a rough idea of what you need rotated and then clean it up by hand. My prediction for the future of filmmaking. Analog. We’re going back. Analog film and miniatures baby.

This is actually a really great episode for the uncanny valley discussion, showing both Gollum and Alita. For me, Gollum and his large eyes doesn't really mess with me as much as Alita with hers. My brain recognizes that Gollum, while having some human like features, isn't quite human enough that his eyes don't really make me feel all that uneasy. Alita on the other hand, with very human features besides the large eyes, does make me feel uncomfortable to the point where I can't watch the movie.

@2:42 "the CGI masterpiece..." Man those are words I never thought I'd hear. For nearly 10 years, "bad CGI" was one of the most common talking points in the film discussion. It eventually became something we all had to accept was here and not going away no matter how much we protested. But I saw Avatar 2, and it has truly earned that title.

The fact that golem never entered the “ UNCANNY VALLEY” even though this is decades old and there are Major motion pictures that have come out in the last 5 year who have characters that tend to be unnatural looking when cg is so impressive. I know the point of the show is to be critical but still props to the visual effects artists who worked on golem.

I don't think that Gollum looks human enough to enter the uncanny valley. It only really happens with humans that look almost (but not quite) human. Gollum has huge eyes, grey skin and he hops around like an animal.

The comment about lighting the background is interesting. On many movies, the special effects jump out on a screen to me from differences in lighting, contrast, or saturation. It tends to be a bigger issue with smaller screens where my peripheral is seeing a larger portion of the scene. When I saw movies in a cinema, I generally did not notice as much.
