It's kind of funny how they make it sound like they invented it for The Mandalorian, but in reality it was used in First Man (2018), way before that... by an Oscar winning studio called DNEG: kzbin.info/aero/PLC6yAyorSxz8K3zj2mj-XpWgK0rDUaUSo

@@tonyStorks it kind of is. The question is what it is that ILM really invented... Unreal is made by another company and using game engine footage in movies, have been done before. And like I mentioned, DNEG used CGI on a "back projection" LED screen, before ILM... I it weren't for the fact that they had to match archival, high resolution video (sometimes recorded @ 500fps), they might have used a game engine to.

I made a disintegration effect in Unreal Engine pretty quickly by creating particles along the surface of an object or model then removing the model and allowing the particles to simulate. This created an instant vanish effect that looks really good and can be replicated super easily. The particles were only 1 pixel and matched the color on the surface they were taken from.

Shazam running through the mall had major "signature X-Men bad floaty slow flying" vibes. I understand the whole point of it was that he didn't really know how to fly yet, but there was zero urgency because he was barely "running" faster than a slow jog. While it was a great render technically, I think it would have sold 100x better if he was actually sprinting while rigged up, giving the final scene the energy needed for it to feel like he's desperately trying to escape.
