About the lighting in space: Thats what was a major thing in filming Interstellar. They had these beautiful, 15:1 miniatures of all the spaceships and they had to light them with the hardest, furthest away source possible. So they set up one lamp at the other side of the studio and flagged it off the black walls, getting the harshest shadows possible on the models. But then they had to go for a super low frame rate to get the exposure they needed (since they shot film and couldn't just bump up the ISO), like 4-5 or even

there's always crazy in Christopher Nolan's movie in terms of CGI, and the only one recent film that doesn't have much crazy it's the "Dunkirk" since there's not much CGI in there at all, you can see the modern shipping cranes on the beach shots. but really the practical are the ones that sells it

Why not continue the worse-effects-end-result theme with The Thing (1982) and (2011)?
@Jhakaro
@Jhakaro 4 жыл бұрын
@kurvos In fairness, the hobbit films were just pretty damn bad. They were incoherent and soul less for the most part. Even the non-cg moments look like cg due to the fairy tale like filter or whatever they did to it. Every actor and object looks far too smooth and glossy which makes even real shots look like a cg render. It's weird. I don't even know exactly what they did to cause that affect, I just know it's there and I don't believe it's just the 48fps thing which may have affected it too. if you enjoy the films, that's awesome, but I don't think they're very great examples of cgi or storytelling.

Ella Seibold I thought that too, the first time I saw it, watching on a computer screen. Then I watched more recently on my home projection screen in HD, and I was shocked at how obvious it was that his face is cut out and pasted onto another actor’s head. It’s strange how different screens can make visual effects look more apparent sometimes.

RE: the lighting in Gravity. I think the thing they missed about the "dark side" of objects and characters being too illuminated is earthshine (it's a thing, look it up). Light is not only coming from the sun, it's also being reflected off of Earth. It's so intense that, in areas with low(-ish) light pollution, you can sometimes see the dark half of the moon faintly illuminated. That's despite the fact that the moon is roughly a quarter million miles away. The shuttle orbited at around 300 miles, give or take.
@TlalocTemporal
@TlalocTemporal 2 жыл бұрын
While planetshine is a thing, it is rather faint. Enough that you don't get harsh shadows like on the moon, but not nearly enough to look like you're sitting above a pool like the Gravity shots do. The reference footage of the car in space was pretty close to Earth too, and the shadows were already sharp.
@johnmeyer8078
@johnmeyer8078 2 жыл бұрын
the spacex spacecraft is less reflective than the very white space shuttle that they are operating from in Gravity. we have actual video from people working on hubble from a space shuttle. it is pretty similar to what is seen in the movie.

@@DarthBiomech I liked it. But even if you didn't you have to give kudos to the integration. Afaik they did not do full CGI replacement. There are portions of her taken from the plate and portions re-done. Then the room glass reflections. Essentially they had to do all of those replacements several times for every reflection. The inside model had to be precisely matched to actresses skeleton too, so the movement would work. It's an CGI masterpiece like it or not.

This channel is a wonderful exploration of the craft and art of effects but also celebrates the collaborative nature of filmmaking. My mind hearkens back the ‘asteroid escape’ scene from Empire Strikes Back, where the actors give it their all, John Williams’s score gives it excitement and drama, the matte paintings and physical models of all the elements, the magic is a net effect, an emergent phenomena of all that amazing work by so many, many people.
