One thing that I like about the gentleman in the video is he is honest and constantly about focusing his attention on the Behringer 2600. Many reviewers on KZbin have their pocket lined with reviews on synths that they get for free from many manufacturers and 100% fake when it comes to long time experience. Again, I don't feel that way when I see the effort and focus of Mr. Ralph here. It's wonderful to see his dedication to other out in the community. Well done!

Thank you very much for your appreciative comment! I have bought all my 2600 Synths by myself, and usually I only buy stuff which I really find useful and can fully endorse. Of course I have also bought some gear which did not turn out the way I hoped, but then I do not make videos about them ;-) The 2600 is one of the best Synths to learn subtractive and modular Synthesis. Of course there are other Synths with similar features as well, which I will buy when they become available. And then I will also make tutorials about other Synths apart from the 2600. Thanks for supporting my channel! Greetings, Ralph

The first four misunderstandings are ones that I’ve been familiar with since 2000. As of 2024, I’ve never owned or borrowed a 2600 or an emulation, but the Axxe is itself equipped with the initial gain feature. When I first got my Axxe and cranked up the initial gain slider, I hadn’t learned yet that it bypasses the VCA. It wasn’t until I got a selection of patch overlays that previously came with the Axxe back in the 70s that I learned how the main benefit of initial gain is for external audio routing. By then, I had read about Jisef Zawinul getting his first 2600 and reaching out to salesman Roger Powell: “Hey man, the sound is fantastic. Now tell me, how do you make it stop?”
@RalphBaumgartl5 ай бұрын
Thanks for posting this. I wasn't aware that the AXXE has a gain slider as well. I have never played an AXXE. Back in the day users were very keen on using the VCF also for external audio signals such as guitars etc...
@Shred_The_Weapon5 ай бұрын
That usage probably was the impetus for Dr. Robert Moog to create the line of Moogerfooger pedals that originated while the Big Briar brand was active. The first one was a duplicate of the 4012 ladder filter.. My Axxe was the Mark II edition. I would probably still have it today, only the keys protruding past the chassis had already suffered damage by the time it came to me, and the resultant difficulties that I had with it sapped my interest in keeping it and playing it.

Excellent video 👍. Misunderstanding 5 also applies to cheap "bucket brigade" delay pedals that use the same inversion trick. Some people say "but everyone listens in stereo these days" but that's not true in public environments. Imagine walking into the supermarket and they're playing your song but that luscious reverb has vanished! Or worse with the delay pedal - in the studio playing your guitar you're The Edge but standing at the checkouts you've become the losing half of The Dueling Banjos! 😀

#6: EXT CLK IN only affects the S&H rate, not the electric switch, and there’s no way to externally control the internal clock rate that controls the switch.
@RalphBaumgartl2 жыл бұрын
So far I have only synced the S&H of my original ARP 2600 with an external source. A square waveform yielded the best results. Nevertheless the S&H syncing process is a bit tricky and also depends on what kind of external gear you are using.

Thanks for these videos! Very helpful. I’m a long-time synth user with Eurorack experience, but i’ve never owned a 2600 before. So your videos are very helpful to quickly get up to speed. The controls are very nicely laid-out with clear marking on the panel (Ron from ARP what a genius). But still, having these videos makes it so that i don’t have to spend my time reading the panel all the time, i can have a better understanding of the flow and just begin working. So, thanks! 👏 Q: Why would Behringer make the reverb outs phase flipped from one another? Anyone using the reverb in a track will find that when listening in mono (like portable speakers), the reverb will disappear. Very odd choice. Maybe Uli likes the artificially-wide sound? But if you can’t use it in a real track, it’s an odd choice.

Thank you! I am glad that my videos helped to get up to speed with 2600 Synth. Behringer was staying true to the original design of the ARP 2600, that's why they also phase inverted the reverb channels on the Barp2600. Thanks again for watching my content. Greetings, Ralph

I had a weird problem this morning. I'm a reading a PDF book on the 2600. Fundamentals of music technology - Volume One - Arp 2600. Each time I use it, all the sliders are down except for the VCA and the initial gain from the VCF. That way, each time I open one or more VCOs in the VCF section, I can here it and test it with a drone sound. So I had everything down. I should have had no sound but I did. In fact, for once I had the initial frequency of the filter at about 5KHz instead of 10KHz and the resonance at about the same point, almost max. It was probably self oscillating since even if the VCOs are all the way down, they still send a signal to the VCF. Anyway, I just put the Resonance at 0 and the FC at 10KHz, and there I had no more sounds unless I opened up a VCO 🙂
@RalphBaumgartl Жыл бұрын
Perhaps the Ringmodulator slider was up just a little bit....

Hey ralph, thank you a lot for your great videos. I have an issue with receiving midi notes and high sustain. When I stop my sequencer, sometimes the behringer keeps droning the last note. I can even disconnect the midi cable, but the same note keeps playing. When I adjust the sustain level (Atack Decay and Release all 0) to 0, the sound stops playing. When I turn up sustain level, the note comes again. This stays until I toggle the midi channel on the 2600. Initial gain is off, also I use the VCA Master. Do you know how to fix this?

Not sure what you meant in the 5th mistake (about reverb) where you say 'when I make a mono connection'. Did you do something off camera? I understanf the concept of phase cancelling in mono. But where/how is the mono/stereo connection made? PS I found another 'beginners mistake' (took me some time to figure out but eventually realised)... In the AR envelope section there's an unlabelled switch (every other switch is labelled directly above/below/beside) which the manual describes as 'Routing Switch' - to select between SH Clock (prewired connection) or Gate In/Trig In inputs. I found this VERY confusing as a) I was using the ADSR envelope so wasn't looking at the AR envelope and b) I wasn't running a patch cable to either the Gate In/Trig In Inputs. Couldn't get any notes to trigger from external MIDI controller and only heard an occasional note (as S&H was at lowest setting - which I didn't notice till later as I was concentrating on the basics initially).
@RalphBaumgartl Жыл бұрын
Kindly do the following and you will understand what I mean. Put the pan slider in the mixer section in the middle position. Connect only the right or left output to your mixer. Dabble with the reverb sliders and listen. Do the same thing while listening through stereo headphones connected to the headset output. You will hear the difference and notice what I mean. What you described about the S&H is exactly what is supposed to happen. Big thanks for your video tutorials Ralph. I don’t understand what is the difference between 4012 et 4072 switch button. I hear no difference. On my Behringer Odyssey I can clearly hear the difference with the switch (3 modes).
@RalphBaumgartl2 жыл бұрын
The 4012 mode is a ladder filter design, which ARP had to abandon back in the day due to some patent issues with Moog. The sound difference is very subtle. In my personal opinion the 4012 VCF bass sounds have a bit more punch and “belly”. On the Behringer Odyssey there’s also a Highpass Filter mode. That’s a completely different thing, thus the the sound difference. You may also want to check out my VCF tutorial here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnmkh2Wqd7Nlj5Y

Why does the 2600 have a stereo output?
@RalphBaumgartl2 жыл бұрын
It's the original ARP 2600 design from 1971. With the stereo output have more sonic options at your disposal depending on the patch.

I have a droning sound at low frequencies, even initial gain and vcf is down. At high frequencies it vanished. Is there a reason for?😮

I assume you just made a patch using the prewired connections. If that's the case then I would say it's a defect.

Um... it’s a classic synth. What are mistakes when your just curious? I don’t want to know technical stuff but that’s got to be what this is about. Sorry wrote this off the title. Haven’t watched b

To be honest, I am not clear what your comment is about. Kindly clarify!
@ubiquitousreverser2 жыл бұрын
@@RalphBaumgartl 😆 My mistake, I wrote the comment before the video started. I have had ‘classic’ analog synths and thought at first when I saw the title, I would just explore it by flipping switches, turning random knobs, and sliders that you could not really make any mistakes. But, I did remember with my first one, a Minibrute, one day I turned it on, and no sound would come out. I was panicked for a while thinking something was wrong with it, but later discovered it had a switch on the back that turned off the keyboard to switch to midi and it had some how got flipped and I didn’t know about it. So I figured that must have been the kind of things you were discussing before the video even started, 🤪.

@@RalphBaumgartl You should finally listen to the ARP 2600 (m or FS), test it. The VCF is much closer to the original. Sure, the difference to the cheap Behringer version is about higher, but the 1300,-- should still be worth it. I had the Behringer 2600 and threw it out. Hardly anything was really ARP 2600
@RalphBaumgartl Жыл бұрын
@@randydarklight Unfortunately I never had the chance to test the Korg 2600. Neither the M nor the FS. During my last Superbooth visit the Korg 2600 M which was on display was always occupied. I own an original ARP 2600 and yes there's a difference in sound (VFC and VCO). But personally, i also like the ARP slider front panel design as much as I like the sound. Thus in my personal opinion the Behringer 2600 Synths offer a pretty good value. I personally can live with the fact that it doesn't sound exactly like my original ARP 2600.

@@RalphBaumgartl I've been watching some videos from your channel. You really stick to the Behringer. In the end, the sound ideas are the same. Thanx mate.

@@randydarklight There are some Synths that I just like because of personal emotional reasons. I used to own an ARP Solus. Elegant simplicity! Another Synth which I like as much as the Solus is the Moog Prodigy (although I never owned one). Another example of perfect elegant simplicity IMHO. Thanks for watching my content. Cheers, Ralph
