Adobe has been used in major motion pictures. The Force Awakens was nominated for an Oscar and after effects was used in the film. Not to as used as nuke, it's pretty well used in movies for visual effects!

Yes, it was used to create some graphics, things that you see on screens in the movie, like control panels, HUDs, etc. But not for VFX compositing. But true, I could have formulated that a bit differently in the video.

It's interesting that C4D never showed anywhere on this list, yet I know of some artists who have used it on high-profile films like Bladerunner 2049 and Ghost in the Shell. Is it really not used anywhere for VFX?

Peter Broomfield when I began in VFX 10 years ago it was much more prominent than now. Definitely still used for some things but not as common as before. Most studios have so many pipeline tools associated with Maya and it is definitely the most widely used solution currently, in my experience.

@@stuhunter Gotchya, good info. I can totally see that. I guess this is specifically for VFX houses with legit production pipelines where workflow is king. With Maya as undisputed king of modeling, and Houdini unmatched in sim and procedural animation, C4D might be an unnecessary middle ground. I can see C4D and Ae being better for small projects created by 1-4 people since the programs are nimble and capable in the right hands. As soon as you start breaking down a larger project though, you need something node-based to put it together. I've tried building projects with multiple animators in Ae. It's not fun. As soon as you have the power of a node-based system for compositing, it makes sense to divide the pipeline tasks into the categories mentioned in the video.
@stuhunter

Peter Broomfield exactly. For compositing it is literally 100 % Nuke at every major studio. I use Nuke all day and at home I have the full adobe suite for personal projects (cost reasons of course lol). I love AE but Nuke is much more powerful for high end VFX compositing with large teams. 90 % of VFX artists are on contracts. We move studio often and it is kind of a nomad lifestyle. So studios using standardized software is very efficient to have artists up and running within a few days of hire (Mondays at most studios are usually busy integrating that weeks new hires).

i think blender is the future, it's growing so fast and the new 2.80 version is pure awesome, it just needs few studios to switch and start contributing money to the developement fund & it"ll take over hollywood's standard in few years, i myself switched from maya to blender 2.80 because i don't need to pay thousands of dollars to do the same things and even better i can do them faster now....in the past that might have been true since blender was overlooked by professionals but not anymore.

@ Every software is pretty much same thing but with different "bundle" of scripts/tools and ofcourse different UI. Behind the scenes they all probably work the same or atleast in a very similar way. That's also why Houdini is really powerful, you basically work "Behind the scenes" and constantly setup everything how you like instead of using premade tools/scripts.

I used all most popular programs and I love doing vfx the most. So I choose houdini. Truly the best 3D program for me. I love the node-based workflow so much. Can see everything and control everything. I love houdini’s procedural workflow. Also I like that it doesn’t have any plugins and doesn’t even need any plugins. Its simply the most advanced 3D software. I like both houdini and nuke. They have same workflow. Nuke is high-end vfx software and houdini is ultra-end vfx software. Combining both together, gives very perfect result in vfx. Fusion is amazing too. Its used a lot in many films. But now over the years, nuke is getting used more. Great video btw. I liked it so much.

just to add to my comment, apparently octane doesn't support ACES color space, which would go on to confirm why it is a step behind Redshift in terma of production usage, but Octane is perhaps the beat entry level renderer, I would suggest it as the best way to start learning... Arnold is an industry standard, also vray is not half bat but more archviz in it's primary usershare, so I would actually call the industry now as: Redshift + Arnold whereas Renderman is more Pixar. Finally in the end the process is handles by thousands of specialized cpus and gpus in production, by softwate like deadline

For instance, I need to learn Maya for rigging, since that is what I want to do. Right now, im a freelance guy, but my goal is to work at a studio. So, I gotta do what I gotta do. Blender is what got me where I am, but I also need to learn other software. Most of the skills transfer over, its the workflow and pipeline that is going to change though. When I first used maya after learning blender, the maya ui, hot keys and navigation was so weird and hard. I thought maya sucks. But, now I don't. I suggest to start with blender, and then move to other applications. The knowledge of 3d is easily transferable. Only small independent studios for movies or TV shows use After Effects in the film industry. I was surprised, however, Autodesk Flame (previously named smoke) did not make the list, but at the same time, some experts have not recommended the program just like a lot do not recommend Hitfilm. I would also not recommend Hitfilm personally because it's unstable with a lot of work around due to limited options.

Used Maya and Mudbox for several years - loved the software. Then one day Autodesk got rid of their perpetual licensing options. Now I’m a Blender supporter! (I’ll give the Blender devs the money I would have otherwise spent on an Autodesk perpetual license.)

Used almost all excluding C4D and MODO. I dont know how Autodesk does it but their softwares takes all the fun out of making CG, however those are powerful softwares. I prefer ZBrush and Blender since those keeps things fun. Rigging and animation are the only things that I prefer to do in Maya. Would love to master Houdini but damn its hard.

Also Blender. Blender will have many improvements in the upcoming release, in 2.80, contains all these features you mentioned for VFX. Blender is also free. Also Rigid Body Physics and Fluid Simulator will be rewritten and greatly improved in 2.81 or 2.82 release (in the end of 2019).

I would mention that blender hasnt really had many "gamechanging" features in release 2.8... eevee is nice and all but apart from UI improvements, everything 2.8 can do was possible all the way back in 2.70 also i wouldnt count on a rewrite of blenders rigid body / fluid system in 2.81, which i would guess will come in around mid 2020
@robertzaku9110
@robertzaku9110 5 жыл бұрын
wiki.blender.org/wiki/Reference/Release_Notes/2.80 in first 2.8 has changed a lot, it is a lot faster for bigger scenes because the viewport is rewritten. Besides that, there is an external branch called Fracture Modifier who implement a perfect destruction system in Blender. Not only that, in Blendermarket, FLIP Fluid plugin that integrates much more realistic fluid simulation is in sale. Have you watched Hardcore Henry movie? All VFX was done in Blender and Fracture Modifier Branch

it's rough and tough, dude. I tried applying for jobs using my portfolio, but they don't need a Max user and I am too used to using Max, Maya's interface is just overwhelming for me right now. As I am jobless for now, yes I have time but I find it risky to learn Maya right now, just polishing my Architecture/ID portfolio with Max. I wish you luck, bro!

If you try natron for node compositing and want more effects definitely go through setting up g'mic as an OFX plugin, the amount of effects you get access is staggering. _G'mic is predominately a plugin used with Gimp like photoshop but free and open source graphics editing software_

Go for a HP Z8 workstation, that's usually the hardware the developers test against. Stay away from custom PC's, stability makes for better workflows rather than raw performance. That new GPU or CPU may sound good on paper, but usually the software performs better on tested components. A stock certified workstation will give you the best results period.

@@ebadullah677 No problem at all! I used custom PC's for my workflows, and realized how much better it is to use pre-configured workstations for VFX. I even worked closely with Autodesk and The Foundry's support teams to find the best solution for workflows, and came to those definite results.
