Sonic Team couldn't get the emulation right for CD in Mega Collection so they just left it for Gems Collection, and even then it's just a port of the PC version. Knuckles Chaotix wasn't included in Gems for a similar reason as CD in Mega Collection, and SegaSonic the Hedgehog wasn't included due to difficulties emulating the trackball.
@Turbulation1Ай бұрын
Yuji Naka actually stated at some point that CD wasn't included in Mega Collection due to space concerns on the Gamecube disc, which makes sense since Sonic CD (Even the windows 95 pc version) takes up around 600-700MB for primarily it's music and Gamecube discs could only hold up to 1.5GB and Mega Collection already uses up most of that space due to bonus content and the collection exclusive music. So, they would have had to comprise on either one end, downgrade Sonic CD's music quality, or not include much bonus material.

There's one thing to note about the Genesis Classics Collection's virtual room menu thing. Sega has a bunch of Genesis titles available on Steam. Originally, these were very straightforward releases, where each game was a separate entry on your steam library and booting them up just immediately booted up the game. However, in 2016, years after they were released on Steam, Sega updated them with the "Sega Genesis Classics Hub", which is the virtual room with the CRT TV and posters and everything. The games were then changed from independent game releases to DLC releases for the hub program. This was then used as the basis for the console Genesis Classics release a couple years later. The Steam version does get a few more extra benefits, like VR support (though I believe that was added later) and Steam Workshop support for romhacks.
@JeskidoYTАй бұрын

I think the most frustrating thing about Sonic Origins is the fact that the Sonic 3 prototype music actually sounded really good on original hardware with the Genesis soundchip. But then they had Jun Senoue try to touch those tracks up for Origins instead of just using the original prototype versions on the ROM, and they stick out like a sore thumb. They don't blend in with the rest of the OST at all anymore! It's weird how Jun Senoue just can't do chiptune anymore. Then again, I think it was more like the programmers translated his compositions for games like 3D Blast because Green Grove is also a banger. But Sonic 4's OST was also stinky when he tried to do "retro."
@nyaheatАй бұрын
Jun Senoue is the main composer for most of the modern 3D games (mostly notable in the Adventure games), his guitarist skills are drastically different than comparing it to Masato Nakamura (STH1&2, Advance), Howard Drossin (S3&K, Spinball), Naofumi Hataya (SCD), Masafumi Ogata (SCD)... they've handled the classic 2D games while chiptune isnt Senoue's style. also, i never realized Senoue composed Sonic 4! (probably cause i never play it) big wtf for me.

The proto type Sonic 3 music used in origins was already composed during Sonic 3's development, the only newly composed track was the super theme
@cullbear55Ай бұрын
@@Retrblu I know that. What I'm trying to say is that they tried remaking the prototype tracks, and they sound worse in Origins than in the leaked ROM. It's like they used different instruments or something. I don't know what, but they definitely don't sound like Genesis music anymore. Carnival Night sounds more depressed in Origins than the prototype track as well, for example.
@RetrbluАй бұрын
@cullbear55 the versions of the tracks used in origins were already created during Sonic 3's development, SEGA just used those versions instead of the one's from the leaked prototype, they didn't change anything, they used already existing versions of the tracks,that were what the Sonic and Knuckles collection versions were based off of
@kineticribАй бұрын
@@Retrblu First of all it's incredibly stupid for Sega to use earlier prototype music, instead of the more finished ones from the prototype that is completely publicly accessible. Second of all, I can almost guarantee that if we ever get the prototype that Sega is pulling these tracks from, that they are going to sound better than what we got here in Origins. In fact, I'd argue the PC Sonic & Knuckles Collection versions of these tracks sound better than the ones in Origins.

The presentation in both Mega Collection and Gems Collection are designed to be “nostalgic” on purpose, even back in the day. The compilations are going for a historical archive feel, especially in Mega Collection Plus and Gems Collection. I personally like this archival aesthetic more than the typical Sonic aesthetic seen in Origins. As for Origins, it’s not a terrible port if you don’t own a PC or care to play the native fan remasters of the classic games. It has some questionable creative choices, especially with game customization, but it’s still a standard Sonic collection for people that just want to sit down and play the classics on their modern consoles or even PC if they don’t care about Team Forever’s fan port or S3 AIR

One thing not mentioned about Classic Collection on the DS... While yes, there is screen crunch having to squeeze the original resolution to match the DS', the start button couldn't do anything, you NEEDED to press the touch screen in order to pause the game. You also couldn't input the classic cheat codes with that in mind too. The main standout for this collection was the ability to play the Genesis games on your DS... then the 3DS remasters came out for the first two games, leaving you with only 3 & Knuckles being the only way to play that game on the go... unless you decided to hack your 3DS of course. It's still perfectly playable if you can adapt to using the screen crunch, the touch screen to pause, and don't have any intention of using any cheat codes. Supposedly (and controversially at the time), it was revealed the game pack had an emulator playing these games as roms. 26:00 - As for THIS Collection... the PC version on Steam actually had Sonic 3 & Knuckles along with more games and you could also further add even more games to it using actual roms, this includes romhacks... However, that's just the Steam version, I have this on Switch as well and... there's quite an annoying input lag (about 1 whole second) that keeps me from playing this as much.

I grew up with Sonic Classic Collection on the DS and it has problems. For one you can't use the sound test/ stage select room and debug mode in normal Sonic 2 because the title screen was deliberately changed not to include the options on the title screen (selecting whether you wanted to play as Sonic or Tails was changed to be something you do on the title screen instead of the options menu, also the title screen was probably changed to remove the multiplayer mode), but you can in Knuckles in Sonic 2 using a cheat code on the title screen. Emulation wise it's obvious that part of the screen is cutoff, especially with the light blue chaos emerald in the opening of Sonic 3. Loading a save file only loads at the beginning of the stage rather than the spot you saved at. Also when loading your save the special stages in Sonic 1 and 2 would not let you retry them if you failed them even if you load a save from before you failed them. The special stages in Sonic 2 and 3 had low frame rates that made them way harder. I will say it was cool having the knuckles lock on features included in Classic Collection because it wasn't included with Sonic's Ultimate Sega Genesis Collection. Despite growing up with Classic Collection, it's difficult to go back to.

The ONLY one I care about is the first one on Mega Drive. 48:10 Scott has to give a brief history of Sega to Gen-Zedders (who THINK they know it all but actually don't know 💩).

I believe sonic gems collection had more games in Japan as well just like in mega collection. I also believe Knuckles chaotix and Sega sonic ( maybe just 1 I might be miss remembering ) were planned for gems collection but I think they lost the code for 1 and the other they couldn't figure out how to get the track ball controls to work on a controller.

That’s for you. Poorly managing their archives since the 2000s

I still like Sonic Origins Plus anyway. This collection is not that bad and I am very glad that they fixed all the critical bugs, removed the blur, fixed the drop dash and much more. This is much better than with Sonic Colors Ultimate, when the developers fixed almost nothing except bugs that turned into memes about fish or epilepsy. Even though they made the music of Sonic 3 worse... I'm glad that Sonic 3 finally got an official remaster, and the game is still great.

Sonic Origins to me is such an unfortunate case where it had so many things going for it and in my opinion, it had the potential to be one of, if not THE best Sonic collection out there. But it was just riddled with so many problems both minor and major along with the fact that from what I've heard, SEGA didn't give the devs the time that they needed to fix up the game before release. So all of the legitimately good things Sonic Origins does are overshadowed for many people due to the way that it was released. But even considering all of that, I can never bring myself to hate the collection. Or even outright dislike it. I have 95+ hours on it and I do enjoy the stuff that is good. Like the animated cutscenes, the smoother feel of each of the games, the Mission Mode, the novelty of playing as Amy in all of the Classic Sonic games, I even like playing the Game Gear games from time to time. It's just a release that leaves me really conflicted.

Sonic Classic Collection DS was what brought me into sonic as a whole growing up. Picked it off the shelf with my dad at a Blockbuster before it went under, even with the lackluster presentation I do feel it held its purpose for the DS era

Easily the best part of these side channels for popular KZbinrs, for them to produce quick & dirty videos that are more stream of conscious than their regular output, which requires a considerable degree of planning & execution, is how you get to discover how they truly think about things and thus are truly vapid they are.

My favorite Scott's Stash calling card is not realizing the video has ended

Mentioning that the emulation seems worse in Mega Collection Plus reminded me; that game had a PC version, which did have an NTSC release, but it uses PAL roms regardless of region (and also has incorrect sound emulation; the most obvious tells for that are Tails's whirring sound and the jump sound). Did the console releases also use PAL roms?

Thanks for sobering me up Scott. I drank too much and decided to watch you. I missed you and knew you would make me closer to sober. What a guy❤️.

can't believe Sega 6-pak wasn't included in this discussion /lh (it only has the original Sonic The Hedgehog and thus wasn't eligible for discussion in this video)

Sonic Jam while not emulation was also not a recreation. It was a very clever port, it was essentially just the genesis games using the Saturn hardware

Fun fact, all the Game Gear games added to Sonic Mega Collection Plus were added into Sonic Adventure DX, which is probably why Plus never came to GameCube. Sonic Team would rather you get those extra games with SA instead.

It should be noted that part of the Sonic 3 music problem on Origins is that the prototype music seems to not be the original prototype music, but rather a Mega Drive version of the Windows version of the original prototype version. It doesn't sound as good.
