Thanks for sharing this heart-moving, touching story :O This is totally as Japanese as it gets. I'm not good at putting these kind of stories into words, but I'll try: Making of this anime took place after the "Great Hanshin earthquake" of January 1995. It's a story about girl named Watanabe Rieko (narrator) and her little sister Naomi who live in Ashiya (which suffered major damage in real life as well, located on east side just next to Koube city) with their parents, who both have been deaf from childhood because of an illness. Rieko dreams about becoming a manga artist. (... It's funny how Bomberman is depicted as a little dumb (or spoiled? あまい) fellow who everyone wants to trick a bit, how cruel :D ) As Rieko's parents are deaf, emergency situations like frequent earthquakes in Japan, might become a real concern. Fortunately Rieko has been even answering phone always since she was three years old, so she knows how to take account of different things with her parents. For example when there comes an announcement that distributing of food portions(?) is about to start, just when the girls are visiting the toilet, she instantly wants to inform her parents. Meanwhile the parents (apparently) happen to be accidentally sitting in front of some kind of storage room. As they don't know to move aside, group of guys (depicted as architype Bad Dudes) are starting a fight without the parents even realizing why they are angry. Until Rieko comes to rescue and in the end even apologizes for her parents being deaf. Now Rieko really understands the situation concerning her parents and decides to become her parents' "ears", just as the video title hints us. The rest is about Naomi crybabying about cold food and selfishly wants it warmed, a volunteer named Kiyoko who came to help from Tokyo and the Angry Dude revisiting to make an apology with a letter, stating he's sorry for not realizing the situation earlier. Everyone complimenting how wonderful daughter Rieko is and talking about how everyone should help each other, even helping those who are opposing you in the beginning. Rieko tells about their story in her school class, lots of encouraging everyone to "ganbare" together (to do one's best) and Rieko and her mom complimenting each other "to the max". In the end Bomberman reminds you about safety matters during earthquake and how important it is to always have the usual earthquake surviving pack ready, near your bed or in the living room. I wonder if there's an animation made after the 2011 Touhoku earthquake as well? :)

Thank you for your insight! Wow, so that's Bomberman's character trait :) Darn shame they don't do animations based on those classic characters anymore. I wonder if there are any other super popular characters nowadays, other than those from all kinds of sentai series... This might not be related but I recall watching a Studio Ghibli documentary where Miyazaki himself said that NHK of Japan has been starting to limit and censor all kinds of things they will show on television, and that kind of atmosphere is starting to impact their ability to produce quality movies in future... I wonder where this kind of movement will end up. O__o... And of course thanks for your kind words, means a lot to me if I can be of help to other people!

Bomberman has had several anime appearances. I suppose it might be a good idea to throw them up in chronological order: 1) An off-color, Famicom sprite based Bomberman appears multiple times in the anime "Bugtte Honey", usually as a plot device or cameo. 2) This weird thing. 3) Bomberman B-daman Bakugaiden and it's sequel, Bomberman B-daman Bakugaiden V, from the Bomberman B-daman spinoff series. 4) Bomberman Jetters, probably the most well-known as it's the most recent and has a complete fansub.
