The art of this type of engineering is long behind us and it shows in todays recordings. I have sat in on many sessions for the last 35 years and have attended more than 500 live concerts. This is not a crap on this generation because as Bruce said, you have to have a benchmark to set a standard and unfortunately the bar has been set so low today. With taking music and music classes out of most public schools our children don't even know the difference between live drums and drum machines. This tape should be shown in every music class and you new-school teachers should be the first to learn from it. RIP Bruce .. we will continue the your legacy for as long as we can. Actually, the reality is much worse. This generation's music is all about being creative with what we can afford, which is jack shit. For example, the last rock movement was the stadium indie stuff 10 years ago, which immediately fizzled out into indie pop when the market crashed. Instruments, amplifiers, practice space-- it becomes prohibitively expensive when you don't even know if you'll enjoy it. Or you could just pick up the Ableton Suite, which comes with everything you need for under $1k and hone your craft on some beep boop tunes. We're broke!

This is a great artifact, because it was filmed when the record making business was just beginning a huge inflection point: hard disk recording (Pro Tools) was starting to become dominant, analog was dying out, and Auto-Tune would soon begin appearing on records. Even though the recording studio I have in my bedroom is in many ways superior to the one Thriller was recorded in, I am fascinated by the age of really expensive recording studios and top-notch session musicians.

The good news is that this works for just about any short omni pencil mic too wrapped in a car wash sponge. stuffed in the bridge. It has all the immediate "punchiness". The long Altec coke bottle reaching under the fingerboard was a good idea if the player alternates to bowing (you wouldn't want rosin dust glueing up the capsule). Today's workaround would be to use something like a DPA Lav or subminiature with a clip or saddle attachment to get under the fingerboard.

I've seen this video recommended to me a few times, I'm really glad I finally watched it. I love his emphasis on the value of early reflections and the stereo image. Technology may have come a long way since the first early digital tape machines but his acoustic principles and approach are still important. I hear lots of "multi-channel mono" records out there but when you do get proper stereo it's very satisfying. I recommend listening to an album called "2 Up" by Rick Price and Mitch Grainger for some gorgeous imaging with acoustic guitar and vocal.

Bruce lectures and demonstrates true stereo, all presented in glorious mono.

At minute 00:34:00, Bruce draws what seems to be Blumlein pair, but he never mentions it and keeps talking on and on about omnis. Anyone knows why is that? Also, which mics are those? Looks like ATs, but which model? Ricardo, thx for upload, this is really intrtesting.

Yes, he is talking about Blumlein, the two mics are in bidirecional pattern.

He talks about an Audio Technica, but he says that don’t remember the name of it. 😄 He uses some B&K mics also (now DPA)
