Squamish, BC is home to the Stawamus Chief, the 2nd tallest freestanding granite monolith in the world. This route took us over Slhanay Peak to the backside of the Chief's 3rd peak where we traversed on the via ferrata.

I'm in Vancouver and goto Squamish and Whistler often enough! Lotsa snow in the backcountry as of November 30, 2022 too! What's really INSANE, is that some of my buddies have climbed the main front face of Stawamus with ropes back in the day starting from the waterfall parking lot and walked to the base and I had to be relegated to going the back routes. I just hold them in AWE at being NUTS ENOUGH to try that sort of stunt. YES! I know they have climbed everything from Denali to Aconcagua to K2 but I can see that both Half-Dome and Stawamus when seen up-close and personal, are something else in the sheer amount of flat walls of rock there are. AND they STILL have so many climbers grappling their way up! Not even mentioning too hard that some people are doing it FREE-CLIMBING with no ropes! Some people are just BORN climbers and living on massive amounts of adrenaline! I am in TOTAL AWE at how they and others do it trip after trip to the climbing wonders of the world! I think I will continue to stick with the local hiking trails, BUT I do wish that I was young and completely fit again! V

Just seeing this video after we are home and we did so this trail up to 2nd peak after going up the wrong back way to peak one (the “ladder type steps” and iron chains that y’all went up too to get to first peak and then continued your descent. I technically couldn’t reach the last rock climbing section up to the top there so just missed first peak but my guy made it up there! Such a great movie 🎥 video to watch right now as it’s fresh in my mind and nerves/fears I overcame! Love this stuff! How do I support you?

What cap do you use to seal your third soft flask you keep in your bag?
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 3 жыл бұрын
That one is no longer for sale, but I'm thinking that this one that comes with the new insulated flask would be a good replacement: geni.us/r1awzSf The insulation should actually keep it colder, longer too.

Just thought about checking out some Mountainbike Trails in our region… what do Mountainbikers say having you/runners on ‚their‘ trails? is that an acceptable thing to do, so is it like ‚share the trails‘ or are they not happy to see that? Implying that one gets out of the way in time of course… please excuse this beginner-question 😅
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier Жыл бұрын
It's a good question! User groups like the mountain bike associations are given permission to build and maintain the trails on public land, but the assumption is that they will (for the most part) remain multi-use and be accessible for hikers, runners, and in some cases even horses. There are exceptions though where some trails are marked as 'bike primary' and in rare cases 'bike only' for safety reasons. Many runners are also mountain bikers and support the trails through their membership dues in associations as well as volunteering for trail building days. I try to get out at least a day or two each season to help maintain the trails myself. At the end of the day, we're all on the same side in terms of wanting to conserve public spaces like this for recreational use and for wildlife. The alternative is for it all to potentially be developed. We share a common goal and are much stronger voice if we work together and share the trails. But in the meantime, as runners I see it as our responsibility to get the hell out of the way of the bikers on the trails too!

Would you mind posting a link to the 42mm cap for your soft flask? I have looked several places and can't seem to find one. I'd rather have a couple extra 500mL flasks than a bladder.

Is that the same black dog you encounter in Puerto Vallarta? Did you bring it to BC?
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 3 жыл бұрын
Hah, I wish. I actually did want to take that dog from mexico back with me, but he ran off with some other tourists on our way back. I went looking for him the next year when I ran the trail again but he wasn’t around. This was just some random dog that was with another hiker near the river in Squamish.

Hi Jeff The title says “via Ferrara”. I didn’t see it in the video. I understand that there is a route near the top of the sea to sky gondola. Have you been on it, and could you make a video of that? localadventurer.com/squamish-via-ferrata-tips/ Thanks!
@JeffPelletier
@JeffPelletier 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Lukas, you’re right - I hesitated to use this in the title, although technically people do refer to this route as a Via Ferrata (“iron way”) as well, given how many steps are built in to the rock. But there’s a new Via Ferrata where you actually wear a harness above the Sea to Sky Gondola. I’ve yet to try it but I’ll be sure to film it when I do!

@@JeffPelletier Thanks Jeff. I was up there yesterday, similar route as the one you did (www.strava.com/activities/5617828696), and came across a sign and welcome booth about the Via Ferrata. I didn't see the actual route, so I am curious on where it is. It would be fun to add to a run.
