Take a tour of VIA Rail Canada's Roomette (Cabin for One), part of its streamliner fleet. Also walk through to the common shower and washroom. Plus some photos of the Open Section (Berths).
See my video of the Canadian trip here:

I took the train from Toronto to Vancouver in one of these cabins and absolutely loved it. Wonderful onboard staff and food. It’s not like a cruise ship and and there’s always the clattering of the wheels and the gentle jostling of the cars but what a view and fabulous way to see Canada. Richard

I took a 3 day trip from British Columbia to Ontario in a single sleeper cabin and it was absolutely one of the best experiences of my life! Although it was fairly expensive I would recommend it. You get to see everything along the way and 3 quality meals a day were included in the ticket.

Back in the eighties I remember the open sleepers being more private than that. The curtains were blue then. That's cool that there's private sleepers for one person. I like the personal toilet but at the same time sleeping in the same area where there's a toilet is a bit off putting even if there is a heavy duty lid covering the toilet. The fact that it looks like something that you would see in a prison is off putting too.

Between the in room toilet in VIA's roomette and Amtrak's roomette, VIA Rail's are so superior. No smell when down and they flush a lot better. You should try one next trip. No need to leave your cabin and no sharing with people who do not flush :)

The toilet right next to the bed, or seat is off-putting. It's a lot like being in a prison cell with the toilet right there. No, I have never been to prison, but have seen those roomettes. Prison roomettes, for that is what they are. I am intrigued by the use of space to supply a good accompaniment of useful things for the traveler. Amtrak in America does this also, but there are no men's restrooms, and women's restroom; all use the same without distinction. You did a good video and I am enlightened by it and rather enjoyed making comparisons with Canadian sleeper train travel and American sleeper train travel.

Christina - thanks for your comments! The bed was awkward to lift and kind of heavy. Your attendant will be making and putting away your bed daily. Hi siouxi808 - the toilet was not stinky, the flush is a pretty powerful vacuum suction. As for seat facing forward - I had to think about this one for a bit. Nicely done step by step walkthrough. I just wish the cabin has its own shower stall like the one from Amtrak instead of sharing. The Amtrak cabin has better layout because the toilet is in a separated and enclosed room which also includes sink and shower. It's more like a RV style layout. So that I am not staring at the toilet when I am sitting down.
@airpicts

This is the small Roomette, which is equivalent to Amtrak's Roomette on the Superliners and Viewliners. VIA does have a larger "Cabin for 2", which is a larger Bedroom with a separate enclosed bathroom. But alas - no private shower.

You said a carryon bag will fit under the seat. But are you referring to a typical conventional type bag that fits in an airline overhead bin?. I’m traveling in a Via cabin for one in May and am concerned. According to via’s carryon requirements, the bag can only be 9” thick and the “personal item” only 6” thick. That’s not much storage for a 4 day trip. Can you please elaborate?
@airpicts

I had a standard 21" airline carry-on roller board and it fit under the seat just fine. From my three trips, no agents ever confronted me for having that size and type of carry-on luggage.

I have taken this trip twice - neither times was there turndown service (not that I requested it). There is very little space after the bed comes down, leaving you little room to get to your luggage or to change your clothes and you cannot use the toilet. Having said that, if you need help to turn down your bed (for nap or night), I am positive your attendant will do it for you with pleasure. They are all friendly and eager to serve. The voltage is 110 - standard for US and Canada.

Hey Ben, would you say it is worth spending the money to do this trip with a cabin for one? It seems like a lot of money for such a tiny room that is also a toilet! But I really want to do the journey, as it looks like an incredible experience.
@airpicts
@airpicts 8 жыл бұрын
Hi April. For my next trip - I will book a cabin again. If you like the sanctuary and privacy of your own space, then getting a cabin is worth it (especially if you are on a multi-night trip). If you are social but budget is a concern, booking a lower berth in a section is a great option. (Book a lower berth because you are guaranteed a window.) You the same turndown service, crisp linen, and all dining car meals as with all Sleeper passengers. You lose privacy during the day, but you will meet a lot of friendly people (and make new friends) as they walk by. If you intend to spend most of your time in the dome car socializing anyway, then that's not a concern. The heavy curtain at the berth offers plenty of privacy at night.
@AprilXyloto
@AprilXyloto 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It probably is worth getting the cabin for me as I like being social but would also enjoy the privacy that comes with having your own space. So bottom line for you... is it worth doing this train journey?
@airpicts
@airpicts 8 жыл бұрын
Yup - given that, I agree getting a cabin would be a good choice. The trip is so worth it! It is the only place where you can still experience a 1960s era streamliner rail journey. Couple that with top notch service, great meals, comfortable bed, you won't regret it!

Hello. VIA website's car diagrams leaves a lot to be desired, doesn't it? I looked in my files, the cabins closest to the vestibule (where you enter the car) are #1 and 2. Cabins #3 and 4 are towards the middle of the car. I would choose 3 or 4 before 1 or 2, because 3-4 are not directly over the wheels. Having said that, from my experience, all the single cabins are very rattly.

@@airpicts Thanks for this video and this specific info in your reply to another KZbin member! I have just booked a Vancouver > Toronto return trip in the Via 'Sleeper Plus' in a Cabin for 1. I could not figure out the room numbers from the railcar layouts Via has on their site, and there is Chateau and Manor. But I will be in #3 one way and #4 on the way back, according to my tickets. I guess I was lucky not to get #1 or #2 over the wheels, because the railcar layouts didn't have the cabin number, so I wouldn't know what to ask for anyway. They also show Manor and Chateau sleeper railcars, but I was told by a Via agent over the phone call it would be Manor railcar. Regarding all of the negative (shock) comments about the in-room toilet... what other toilet offers a view like this?? Certainly not the shared one at the end of the railcar with the frosted glass window. This could be marketed as a unique feature. LOL I think I would rather use the in room toilet than a shared one. I'll find out in a few months...

@@airpicts Update: Completed Via 1 and Via 2 train trips in January. I was in _Sherwood Manor_ Cabin 4 both ways. Originally Cabin 3 for the return, but another passenger wanted to switch sides of the train to be on the north side, and since I was on the north side for the first trip, switching to the south side of the train worked for me too. So I ended up in the same cabin on the same railcar both ways. The staff were awesome, the food was *excellent,* and it was great to meet people from all over the world during meals, in the dome(s) or in the Glacier Park _Bullet Lounge._ I used the shower every day and it is exactly as you describe, hot water with decent water pressure. No complaints at all. The changing area for the shower is well laid out, and spacious for being in a train. The staff clean the shower after it is used, so it is ready for the next passenger. I did use the in room toilet instead of walking to the front end of the railcar to the toilet for the passengers in the berths. Best scenic views from a toilet ever! The cabins for two have no windows in the toilet compartments, and the public area toilets on the train all have frosted windows. Several comments left for your video were concern or disgust of having a toilet in the same room you sleep in, but there is zero odors or any other problems; you aren't even aware it is under the 'Murphy' bed. This trip was such a great time, I am sure I will do it again in the future. Thanks for your video to demonstrate what this cabin for 1 (roomette) would be like before I made the booking with Via.

Back from my trip on this train, and I have to be honest.....it was horrible. The train cars are old and from the 1950's and have little to no upgrades done to them.My service attendant did not come one single time that I pressed the button, the air conditioning in my cabin did not work properly, my cabin was not cleaned properly before I got on (dried urine on the toilet seat rim), I could not sleep during the night, and the staff in the dining car were super rude to me. The food was good I have to admit (with exception to the salmon dish) that I sent back because it was warm and kind of slimy. When I sent it back the waitress made a rude remark to me about my weight. I paid for a 1st class ticket and received sub-par service the entire trip. We also got 5 hours behind schedule because we had to constantly stop and let freight trains go by. It was the worst travel experience I've had to date and I would never, ever do it again. I paid $1,150 dollars to go from Vancouver it Edmonton first class and had the worst service in my life. I even had to tell one of the staff at one point that Hey I paid a crap load for this ticket, so at least try to put on a show to make me feel like I'm getting my money's worth. My advice.....DO NOT TAKE A TRIP ON THE VIA CANADIAN.

Have you traveled much? On trains in North America? NA trains are not like European trains. The one time I took Amtrak rt from LA to Seattle, I discovered that apparently they clean the toilet tanks only in LA, because halfway back to LA, they started locking the toilets, and it was a search to find one. And when you could find one, it was small, coach-class -on-a-domestic-airlines small. And the walls were sticky. THAT ... THAT was disgusting. If I EVER travel on a train in the US again, it will be a private room with an attached toilet. Or even a toilet in the room. I don't care -- I just want a clean toilet that works, and it's not clean if 100 people are using one head for 30 hours. Not in the US, anyway. They don't want to pay to clean enroute, so Americans are getting used to traveling in filth so somebody can save expense/increase profit. Doesn't matter the non-dollar cost, as long as that bottom line looks good. I had a toilet sitting in the middle of my hotel room in rural France. I cracked up. But in the night, I was glad I didn't have to pad down the hall in my pj's. Just close the lid when flushing. This is a hard-and-fast rule in my home. A toilet flushing is like a toilet sneezing -- all those droplets go everywhere if the lid is open.

@@monicadzisiak7291 Aircraft toilets are hardly sweet smelling after a long flight and break down quite often. Comparing travel time between the train and flying is totally meaningless., particularly for long distances. If you need to get somewhere quickly then obviously flying is the answer. However, there are people who are nervous (or terrified) of flying but many, myself included, travel by train for the pleasure of the experience itself, specially on such a scenic route such as the Canadian takes.

You are not obliged to use the toilet in this cabin in which case there is no problem at all. It remains fully covered. Also you can leave the cabin and enjoy the rest of the facilities of the train at any time. I don't believe this freedom is possible with prison cells. Pesonally I find aircraft rather claustrophobic and the behaviour of some passengers becomes increasingly unpredictable.

@@johnhead1643 I think that one of the best things of both the long distance lines in both Canada and the US are the communal observation cars where passengers can leave their rooms and mingle with others. But with COVID we saw the importance of separate rooms to contain the spread of airborne viruses in trains. I just wish that the train would allow passengers to crack open the windows a little bit if they desire to aid air circulation. I would also wish that VIARail would replace those curtains with ones with a less depressing color

God this is old equipment. These are the same roomettes they had 50 years ago. I"m sure they've been refurbished since then but it is essentially exactly the same as it was back then. We Canadians are so cheap. If it still does what it's supposed to do, don't dare replace it with something more modern.

part of tehe fun is riding older, nostalgic rail cars. If you want modern cars,with late trains and bland food, take Amtrak. VIA is so sup[erior to them.

Thanks for posting this. What a rude awakening. Surely jail cells are better than that. I guess I envisioned more Orient Express than jail cells. It looks like a punishment, not a holiday.

it's kinda like going back in time. This service is slower, more expensive, and less comfortable than air travel. I understand there are people who can not fly, but i hope VIA would respect its customers enough to at least an acceptable product.
