We rode on Via Rail, The Canadian, from Toronto to Vancouver and had an excellent time in the cabin for 2. The trip took us 5 days and 4 nights and we met some wonderful passengers along the way.
Passengers on the Canadian can choose from economy class, upper and lower berths, cabin for 1, cabin for 2 and prestige class. Our cabin for 2 was nice and it included a private bathroom in the cabin.
Our journey started at Toronto Union Station and we ended at Vancouver Pacific Central Station.
We loved the park car and the views from the dome car on the train were spectacular. The meals in the dining car were among our favorites on a train. In the park car refreshments were served most of the day.
During our trip we got to see snow capped mountains which was a real treat. We also got time to walk around in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Jasper.

I did this trip on the Canadian National in 1968. I'll say that equipment you showed in this video is a huge improvement from the past. And that train and the stations looked completely deserted! Lots of terrific scenery. You realize how vast and underpopulated the middle of Canada is.

@@bobjohnson1587 For sure some parts are not the same. The 1968 sleepers looked like regular coach in the day. For nighttime the porters converted the seats to a two-level bunk with curtains. The whole car had neat rows of bunk beds on each side of the aisle. No doors and shared one restroom. People's snoring was irritating!

Be prepared for amazing scenery but LONG waits for freight traffic. We were supposed to get into Vancouver at 9:30am. I had dinner reservations at a revolving restaurant at 7pm. We finally arrived at 11PM Never saw sights in Vancouver. 13.5 HOURS LATE. Bedroom was so small we had to schedule movement to get into bathroom It’s better in video than for real. Glad we did it once. Never again

@@demofred Yikes! The latest that I ever was on the 'Canadian' was 12 hours - because the train froze up in Winnipeg in -40 weather - and I used to work on it! Back then the running time from Toronto to Vancouver was 68 hours - not 90+ - and it had priority over freight trains. How things have changed, and not for the better! Sigh!

My Dad and I took the ViaRail Canadian at the end of November but in the opposite direction. We started at Vancouver Station after flying out to visit my niece. Dad is 83, and I'm 59. I've never been on the train for any length of time, and I found the journey to be fantastic. The rooms were comfortable, and I fit into the bed nicely, and I'm 65" 300 lbs. and we never felt cramped in the room. The meals were second to none, and my Dad went so far as to say, "It was some of the best food I've ever had." Scenery was second to none and I must've taken 400-500 pictures. We both would do it again in a heartbeat.

Here! Here! I say, my good longtime train Ambassadors of, many years and precious moments shared. On board various great train experiences. Amtrak,.a first and foremost on behalf of,.its timely provision making it possible. Throughout the commemorable years of service, and commitment to the passengers What a true blessing! KUDOS!! I'm so elated and appreciative for the videos, shared with the viewers. Allie & her husband Rob, know their craft in explaining all, the important factors duration of travel. Lodging mainly aboard a train, specifically. What it curtails and so forth. Allie makes me feel as well, I'm traveling along with her. It's soo nifty and comfortable. Reassuring as well. The best to Allie & Rob, such a great humble power couple of great possibilities. Hopefully, one day I'll be able to do, the same exact thing they've. done. Long distance travel thoroughly so. Canadian travel as well. Just the particulars of that alone. Be safe!

Not a doctor but a retired RN, I do know our bodies react to bitter cold by concentrating much of our circulating blood to our vital organs to ensure they keep working. Thus, our hands and feet are the parts that most often are affected by severe cold, i.e., frostbite. Love your videos! I am so loving this video.....I have to say I know over time things change, but as a teenager with her parents back in the late 70's, I never thought of future changes that I have lived thru.....we took via rail to Sydney. Nova Scotia on order to catch a boat over to Newfoundland.....we were on the train over night....and belive me out via train did not look like this one at all....I don't even know if it was 2 stories, I don't think there was a reception car.....there was a car for diners to sit at a counter for micro waved foods.....out seats got changed into beds, upper and lower bunks and we pulled curtains over once we went to sleep.....that's what I remember.....I'm so glad I stumbled on this video....a friend of mine and myself r embarking on a trip later this year for the Rocky Mountaineer and I am so excited, cannot wait....I hope u enjoyed your trip....an amazing video.....

I always enjoy your train travel videos. I just finished watching your VIA Rail Canadian Trip from Toronto to Vancouver in the winter. I used to live 200miles west/northwest of Winnipeg. I think it is proper to inform you that you were travelling during Bikini winter weather in the Canadian Winter in the regions through which The Canadian travels. For Instance Capreol and Sioux Lookout at noon between Christmas and end February having overnight temperatures of 40F and daytime highs of circa -10F. And it is a dry cold compared to Southern Ontario Jasper is a little more temperate but also much colder than when you were there! 😁😁😁😁 Keep up the good work. You are among the best train travel hosts on you tube! - Father Lawrence Winslow, ACNA Priest (retired). PS: I am taking that rip to Vancouver and back in April!

Glad you enjoyed your trip! On behalf of VIA's employees past and present I say thanks for appreciating our work. These 1950s stainless steel Budd cars were the cat's pyjamas when they first came out and are still pulling their weight. Much of the stainless steel is original, as well as the berths. Our service standards are traditional to rail travel with attentive porters and silver service in sleeper class and roomy functionality in coach. Very, very popular with rail fans, especially the Park Cars.

At Prince Rupert we took the BC Ferry to Bear Cove, Port Hardy on Vancouver Island with a stop before we got to Victoria. We had a good few days in Victoria before flying home. The train was a great experience and the food was very good. Other years I went on the Rocky Mountaineer from Banff to Vancouver and on another trip I went from Jasper to Vancouver via Quesnel and Whistler. If you haven’t been on the Rocky Mountaineer I would recommend it. I went Gold Leaf class, expensive, but really worth it. My trips were all in the summer. The only winter trip I did was from, Vancouver to Calgary in a February. It was cold!

Love the experience. I did this route but from the opposite end from Vancouver to Toronto and it was also in Cabin for 2. I also made a video because I was looking and surprised to see a few videos on the Via Rail The Canadian, especially the eastbound. I was lucky enough to see the prestige class from someone I asked nicely, which was amazing. But what I like is where you can meet other people from other places.

Allie & Rob great Job you did on our VIA Rail Canadian. Since you both were pretty impressed on your trip, next time you both return plan for the summer months & take advantage of the summer months & the extended daylight hours. I suggest you take these other 2 VIA Trains in as well.... Go from Winnipeg to Churchill Manitoba 2 Nights & 3 days in late October to about late November & checkout the Polar Bears. There are tours you can take that are safe that will take you in a Tundra Buggy up & close with the bears. Also the Beluga Whales are up there as well. You need to book your Hotel in advance as space is limited up there. There are Sleepers & a Park car in this trip. Take VIA's "The Skeena" to Prince Rupert BC from Jasper. It's a 2 day daylight trip & you overnight in a Hotel in Prince George BC. This is just coach seating only with light snacks you can purchase. You need to book your Hotel for Prince George overnight as it's not included in the train fare. You will need to provide your own transportation to/from the hotel to the station. At Prince Rupert sail overnight on BC Ferries sailing through the "Inside Passage" to Port Hardy as they have overnight cabins onboard. Then you can ride down to Victoria by Motor Coach down the East Coast of Vancouver Island Parksville. Make a stop of a few days in Parksville & enjoy the beaches there. Rent a car & drive to the West Coast of Vancouver Island to Tofino & Ucluelet & take in the big surf & the sandy beaches. Book a few nights at a resort there prior to heading back to Parksville & Nanaimo. Then continue again by Motor Coach to the Southern Tip of Vancouver Island to Victoria. Spend a few days there before heading back across on BC Ferries (90 mins crossing) to Vancouver. Both of you will enjoy this trip.

Considering the noise this train trip has I appreciate the very neutral music. I especially enjoy the long views of the scenery. From my phone video I can't read menu. Besides the selection the two of you make a couple of voice menu choices or not. Considering the weather you had on that trip quality not bad. I like the style of delivery comment wise. From communication I've seen between you two and Trek Trendy, I haven't seen their post of this trip yet. Now I have 2 ways to view train travel in a way that for me is magical! Thanks!

I am very new to watching these wonderful train escapades. I absolutely love them and perhaps me and hubby can take a nice train ride someday in the very near future. I love the way you do a step by step presentation of all the wonderful experiences you have encountered including the delicious looking foods. I don't have a lot of experience with Amtrak or any other train rides but I do have some, but this has me thinking perhaps I should just take the plunge and go for it. We would love a sleeper car, so we definitely have to do research and find a fun journey to start. Still watching your fun videos and learning quite a lot. Take care guys and thanks

I'm so very happy that you both enjoyed our VIA. And you had such a clear day through the mountains too! You both rode on a piece of Canadian history across a beautiful country and unfortunately i don't think those cars will be around forever. Too bad they had the buffer car at the end, the view from the bullet car rear door is amazing, or it was anyway. Thank you for your wonderful review of our Canadian historical treasure. Was the cold in Montreal you mentioned as cold as the cold snap you had in Edmonton while you were here? Edmonton is a dry cold, for sure but the wind can freeze your skin in a matter of minutes if the temp gets lowered with the wind chill. I live in Edmonton so am use to the dry air, but as soon as I get somewhere with humidity, I freeze even in summer lol.

Thank you for these! We live at Empire Builder stop, 6 trips so far, and looking at Canada, Vancouver to Toronto. Baggage Q - usually travel with airline sized spinner and backpack with essentials (size of yours!). This looks like a great trip in winter, or shoulder seasons (shoulder tent trip last spring did NOT go well, train would be better, even with snow delays). Found it, whew, looks like 21" spinner is "carry on." Now on to schedules, only travels 2x week.

Really enjoyed your video. While I have done the trip from Vancouver to Lake Louise, Banff and Jasper by car, I always wanted to do it on VIA. I've waited too long in life to do it now, but feel like I shared the trip with you. My favorite place in the world is Tofino, BC. I highly recommend the ferry trip from West Vancouver to Nanaimo, and then the beautiful drive across Vancouver Island to the west coast. Tofino and the Pacific Rim Park are sheer magic with rain forests, food, great people and fabulous art. The Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino is perched on the rocks jutting out into the ocean. The restaurant is wonderful. I love to go during storm season in November when the waves are breathtaking, log fires burn in fireplaces and the area isn't crowded.
