I took this train a while back. probably in 2017 or 18. I was supprised to learn that the dome car isnt used anymore. I remember sitting in it and being amazed by the atlantic views and the complimentary snacks in the lounge downstairs.

It’s been thirty years since I took the ocean,&then it was only because VIA had dropped the “Bay liner”. Food & the park car made traveling by train most enjoyable.

4:25 VIA does actually own some track. They own the track from Coteau to Ottawa to Brockville and also 67 km of track from Windsor east (most of the way to London). Other than that they do mostly run on CN’s track, except for the White River train, which runs on CP’s track (and a few places where CN and CP have track sharing agreements).

Great video, Trav!!! Just so you know, in the busier months, you can get the HEP cabin for 1. The busier times call for added rolling stock to keep up with the demand. Thanks for using some of my video/images! That was really fun to see! Sorry I missed you on this trip. Next time!!!

You said that Halifax is the most eastern VIA station in Canada but if you look on the map the train station in Truro NS is actually more easterly that Halifax Halifax is 63.1005° W Truro is 63.2765° W I enjoyed your candid comments on both the Ocean and the food they served. We went across Canada in 2018 so we were fortunate enough to have the Park car as well as observation cars. Without these I agree with you that the trip would be much less enjoyable especially for $1000 pricetag

The Ocean having domes was a relatively recent invention. However, back in her glory days under CN, she carried a distinctive and swanky ex-Milwaukee Road Skytop lounges. What is really killing the Ocean are the 2012 cuts to thrice-weekly and the deterioration of the Newcastle subdivision (Moncton, NB-Campbellton, NB) to 20-30 mph. The Ocean was never meant to be a tourist draw but instead a heavy transportation machine. Like in the CN days where she was augmented by the Scotian (same route running a few hours behind), local trains between major stops along the way, and other maritime connections, like Yarmouth, Sydney, St. John, and even Boston.

Hey man I know this isn’t a hockey based blog but wanted to comment this anyways. it’s good to see your improvement at such a high level. Can definitely see the comparisons to Hallebuck (not gonna attempt to spell his name) but everything is tuned in just remember if your going to play as deep as he does you have to have the same reading ability he does. That’s what allows him to play at that depth and be so successful. Your almost there just put that importance on the pre shot reads or don’t listen to me and keep doing ur thing either way I think you’ll do great next season👍

@@trav4oilers To be honest, it was a bit underwhelming after having been in Prestige Class on the Canadian twice. The humidity in my room on the Renaissance cars was quite high at times and I spent most of my time in the service car. The shower in the room was cumbersome to use as I had to remove all the towels and my toothbrush in the bathroom as everything would get wet. This was part of my third Prestige Canadian trip where I added Halifax-Montreal-Toronto to the beginning. Now I have enough Via Preference points for a fourth Prestige Canadian trip in the winter.

No more train travel to or from Halifax after rail lines washed out in our destructive torrential rains a few days ago. That is, until inspection and repairs happen. VIA has lowered its standards in our part of the world. The dome car was terrific. Typical for us Maritimers, sadly. Money talks and our part of the world is rich in natural beauty and wonderful people, but we aren't wealthy as a general populace. Corporations focus on where the money is.

I rode the Ocean Montreal-Halifax RT in 2/2001, after I found a very good VIA fare on line. Roomettes in Chateau Salaberry both ways, and overnight at the former CN Nova Scotian Hotel. The Ocean was a classic Budd streamliner back then. I had no choice but to fly to and from Montreal. Amtrak loves its day trains; I sometimes wonder if they're in bed with the hotel industry. I'm near Roanoke VA, and it's theoretically possible to go all the way to Montreal by rail. But the connections s**k, and I'd have had to get a second mortgage on my house to be able to get a hotel room laying over in New York. So I bit the bullet and flew. If Amtrak hadn't dropped the Montrealer, I would have ridden it instead.

Great review, nice and snappy pacing and fair comments. I think ALL of Canada needs new rolling stock. It's frankly geriatric everywhere. Yes, there are new 5-car sets (which is a joke) running between Ottawa-Montreal-QC, but that's it. And no, you STILL can't take your bike on the train.
